Giants named a potential landing spot for a trio of linebackers

The New York Giants will enter free agency a week from now with needs up and down their roster. Most are obvious and have been discussed ad nauseam. However, there are a few depth issues at positions that have been largely overlooked.

Despite an All-Pro-level performance from Bobby Okereke and a breakout season from Micah McFadden in 2023, general manager Joe Schoen will need to add some bodies at linebacker. That’s especially true considering Cam Brown and Carter Coughlin will not be back.

Believing that the Giants may go with a high-dollar option at the position, Pro Football Focus named them a potential landing spot for three free agent linebackers.

New Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen was the Titans’ defensive coordinator in 2023, and finding a running mate for linebacker Bobby Okereke will be important, though New York also desperately needs help along the defensive line and in the secondary. Nonetheless, the duo would form one of the better run-defending linebacker tandems in the NFL.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen was a member of the front office that added Dodson as an undrafted free agent in 2019, and he finally got to showcase his skills in 2023 following a bunch of injuries. New York may need to focus its real spending in the trenches, so the team adds a low-cost, agile backer with familiarity.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

New Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen added Cunningham off waivers in 2021 and kept him aboard for 2022. Cunningham is still a very capable run defender who can shed tackles and make plays around the line of scrimmage.

Giants land top receiver in Dane Brugler’s post-Combine mock draft

The New York Giants could be in the market for a quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft but mock drafters are sticking to their original prediction of Big Blue selecting a top wide receiver.

In Dane Brugler’s latest mock in The Athletic, the Giants opt to select LSU wideout Malik Nabers.

General manager Joe Schoen won’t be able to hide his smile if Nabers is still available at No. 6. Regardless of who’s playing quarterback for the Giants, this offense drastically needs a true X receiver who changes how defenses game plan against it. Nabers is that, and more.

The Giants likely had Washington’s Rome Odunze ahead of Nabers on their wish lit but Brugler has the Chicago Bears trading up ahead of the Giants to No. 5 to snag Odunze away from Schoen and the Giants.

Odunze looks like he’s going to be a slam-dunk stud at the pro level. NFL.com has compared him to the great Larry Fitzgerald.

Also, a lot has happened in the past five days that Brugler may not be taking into account.

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been rocketing up the board after a stellar showing at the NFL Combine and is now considered a top-10 prospect — maybe higher.

In this mock, McCarthy is taken seventh overall by the Minnesota Vikings, who trade up with Tennessee to grab the reigning National Champion.

Giant fans will not sit back quietly if Schoen gets outmaneuvered for both Odunze and McCarthy in the first round.

Nabers seems like a consolation prize here. The Giants will still have major questions at quarterback as Daniel Jones’ health and future are still very much in the balance.

LeBron James: “Austin [Reaves] was sensational from the start to the finish”

With Taurean Prince and Cam Reddish no longer in the Los Angeles Lakers’ starting lineup, Austin Reaves has assumed more crucial defensive responsibilities.

In the recent victory against the Thunder, Reaves took on the challenge of guarding Thunder All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, as highlighted by Khobi Price of the Orange County Register.

LeBron James commended Reaves for willingly accepting the defensive challenge, particularly against one of the league’s top players. The focus was on preventing unnecessary fouls and limiting Gilgeous-Alexander’s free-throw opportunities, a key aspect of his scoring.

Harry Kane unlikely to move back to the Premier League this summer – Man United News And Transfer News

4

Scoring goals has been a problem for Manchester United this season with the Red Devils being the lowest scorers among the top 12 Premier League sides while also having a negative goal difference.

Rasmus Hojlund’s recent injury has hit them hard, with Erik ten Hag’s side losing two out of three in the Dane’s absence while generally looking very poor going forward.

Despite a Manchester Derby stunner, Marcus Rashford has not looked like his old self when playing up front while Anthony Martial’s United career seems to be drawing to a close.

The Denmark international had scored in six consecutive games before his injury and had begun to justify why the club decided to splurge £64 million for a player so young.

Kane talks

However, Ten Hag has ended up overworking the 21-year-old due to lack of options and the club need to address this issue going forward.

INEOS, who are the new minority stakeholders, have plans in place and The Peoples Person recently relayed Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s fascination of bringing back Harry Kane to England.

It is well-known that the 20-time English league champions were after the Tottenham Hotspur record goalscorer only for Daniel Levy’s obstinate stance of not strengthening a direct rival preventing United from getting their man.

The England captain ended up moving to Bayern Munich for an initial £86.4 million where he has continued his amazing goalscoring record.

The 30-year-old is Bayern’s leading scorer with 33 goals in as many games while he is also the joint top-scorer in this year’s Champions League.

Rumours swatted aside

The Spurs legend is said to be open to a return to the Premier League but as TeamTalk revealed in their report, a return in 2024 has been termed as “stupid news” by German sources.

The only way Kane can return to England is if somebody decides to pay more than what the current Bundesliga champions paid for his services.

Levy is said to have included a first refusal option his Kane’s contract which means the Lilywhites can match any offer Bayern receive for their star striker. But such an exorbitant spend on a 30-year-old might not be everyone’s cup of tea/

“The prospect of Bayern Munich star Harry Kane returning to the Premier League this summer amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Chelsea is unlikely, TEAMtalk can reveal.

“Sources in Germany have played down the reports about a potential return to England for Kane this summer and described it as “stupid news”, while the possibility of a move in 2025 is a unknown at this stage.

“The stance from sources on the English side is similar, although there is a belief Kane would be open to a return to the Premier League.

2024 move looks difficult

“Bayern are happy with their major signing from last year and would only consider a sale should they receive a fee above what they paid.”

While Kane has been right on the money since his summer move, Bayern have been lacklustre to say the least and are currently 10 points behind league leaders Bayer Leverkusen who seem to be running away with the league title at the moment.

The Bavarian giants also suffered a shock exit at the hands of third-tier Saarbrucken in the DFB Pokal and are in real danger of going trophyless at the end of the campaign.

The Champions League remains their only hope with the Englishman scoring a brace on Tuesday to inspire his new club to a a 3-1 win on aggregate in their Round of 16 tie against Lazio.
