How Manchester United could line up under Erik ten Hag after successful summer window

Manchester United would appoint Erik ten Hag as their permanent manager earlier this week.

The Dutchman is set to take charge of the club at the close of this season and, as shown by recent results, is facing a pretty mammoth task.

Ralf Rangnick recently suggested that Manchester United needed six to 10 players to rebuild the squad. And, whilst such a number is unrealistic for one window, it is clear Man United need to bring in at least a few players to help revitalise this squad.

The likes of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard will be leaving for free. And whilst recouping no transfer fees for said players is not great, their exits should free up a tidy amount on the wage budget.

Anthony Martial could also be sold along with a few more fringe stars to bring in some funds. But who will Ten Hag and co. bring in to replace that crop of players?

Well, 101 have drawn up a starting line-up Ten Hag could use after what would likely be classed as a fairly successful summer.

Centre-back needed

Starting in defence, it is clear that David de Gea does not have the ability on the ball to fit Ten Hag’s style, whilst Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Alex Telles have proven their lack of ability at the top level.

However, as this line-up is being produced after just one summer, United are unlikely to be able to sign a new player for each position.

So, given Harry Maguire’s poor form, Raphael Varane’s injury woes and the fact the rest of United’s centre-back options are average, it is apparent the Red Devils must improve in this area.

One player they should look to target is Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine is currently playing under Ten Hag at Ajax where he has showcased his technical prowess with the ball and his ability to put in a tackle on numerous occasions – skills required by most modern defenders.

Martinez is also left-footed, meaning Ten Hag would be able to partner the South American alongside one of the right-footed Varane and Maguire.

And, of course, as he is already playing under Ten Hag, Martinez would, in theory, not take long to adapt to United’s system under the Dutchman.

Ajax 2.0

For fans of the English game, the name Ten Hag was likely first heard in the 2018/19 season when his Ajax side made it all the way to the 2018/19 Champions League semi-finals – seeing off Real Madrid and Juventus along the way.

A key reason that team was so successful was because of their midfield. Current Manchester United star Donny van de Beek made up a third of that midfield. And whilst he has struggled in England to date, it is anticipated Van de Beek will be given a new lease of life under Ten Hag.

Elsewhere, Frenkie de Jong was used as a defensive midfielder by Ten Hag for Ajax, with his displays in the 2018/19 campaign enough to earn him his big-money move to FC Barcelona.

De Jong has since endured a mixed stint at the Camp Nou, in part due to him being deployed slightly further forward as Sergio Busquets occupies his role.

But, as Man United have no natural defensive midfield apart from Matic who is leaving, Ten Hag should look to bring De Jong to England and play him at the base of United’s midfield.

This leaves just one spot available and, although he has been a controversial figure at times, Fred has proven lately that he can excel when playing slightly further forward.

Of course, this leaves no room for Bruno Fernandes. But Man United still need to rotate and Fernandes could be utilized as both an 8 and maybe as a false-nine in Ten Hag’s side, especially if the Manchester outfit are unable to bring in a decent no.9 this summer.

Ronaldo remains

With Jesse Lingard leaving for free and Mason Greenwood no longer training with Manchester United, it is evident the Red Devils need a new right-winger.

The obvious option is Antony. The Brazilian has electrifying pace, Champions League experience and is proven under Ten Hag.

This would see Jadon Sancho moved to his favoured left-wing role, leaving just the centre-forward spot up for grabs.

And whilst United do need a no.9, signing a defensive midfielder is a more pressing issue right now and likely to be where most of their money goes this summer.

So, though not an ideal situation, Ten Hag may have to rotate between Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford during 2022/23.

Aaron Rodgers had 3 emojis to sum up Bucks routing Bulls in Game 3

Aaron Rodgers seemingly tweeted out his reaction to the Milwaukee Bucks blowing out the Chicago Bulls in Game 3.

The Chicago Bulls earned their first playoff win since 2017 after they defeated the rival Milwaukee Bucks 114-110 in Game 2 to even up their first-round series. After the win, the Bulls’ official Twitter account decided to take some shots at Bucks minority owner and Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The series headed to Chicago, with the Bulls looking to take advantage of a Bucks team without Khris Middleton. Instead, Milwaukee blew out Chicago by the score of 111-81 to take a 2-1 series lead.

Rodgers seemingly shared his reaction to what transpired in the Windy City on Friday night.

Aaron Rodgers had 3 emojis to sum up Bucks routing Bulls in Game 3

In the Bulls’ first home playoff game in five years, they set the wrong kind of record. Their 30-point loss is officially their largest margin of defeat in a home playoff game in franchise history.

As mentioned earlier, the Bucks were without Middleton after he suffered an MCL sprain in Game 2. Even in his absence, Milwaukee had an all-around great team performance.

The Bucks were led by Grayson Allen, who scored 22 points off the bench while shooting 8-for-12 from the field and 5-for-7 from the three-point line. Bobby Portis secured a double-double after recording 18 points (7-for-14 from field) and 16 rebounds.

Chicago will look to even the series up with a win in Game 4 on Sunday, Apr. 24. Tipoff time is at 1:00 p.m. ET and will be televised on ABC.

Giants reportedly looking to trade 2021 first-round pick Kadarius Toney

The New York Giants are reportedly looking to trade wide receiver and 2021 first-round pick Kadarius Toney.

There has been a lot of wide receiver movement thus far in the offseason. If you thought the Deebo Samuel saga was the latest to keep an eye on, you may want to check out the New York/New Jersey area.

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, the Giants are looking to trade wide receiver and 2021 first-round pick Kadarius Toney. Leonard adds that the team is making calls to gauge how much they can get in a trade.

Giants reportedly looking to trade Kadarius Toney

Leonard continued in his Daily News article, saying that Toney’s commitment came into question in his first season, citing “lack of playbook study” and “poor meeting behavior.” That, and Toney dealt with numerous injuries throughout his rookie year.

The Giants held their voluntary offseason program to get ready for the upcoming season under new head coach Brian Daboll. Toney was not in attendance.

New York used the 20th-overall pick in last year’s NFL Draft on Toney, which they received after they traded the No. 11 pick to the Chicago Bears, who moved up to get quarterback Justin Fields. The Giants got a 2022 first-rounder from Chicago in return, which turned into the seventh-overall pick.

When on the field, Toney flashes electric speed when he catches the ball. He dealt with a variety of injuries in his rookie season, which include to his shoulder, quad, hamstring, thumb, ankle and oblique. That, and Toney spent two stints on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Toney was limited to 10 games in his rookie season, where he caught 39-of-57 targets for 420 yards and zero touchdowns.

It will remain to be seen if the Giants trade Toney. If they do, that would put the team in the market for a wide receiver in what is a very deep class in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Rangnick confirms Pogba’s contract stance & responds to Bailly’s plea

The latest press conference held by Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick on Friday has given rise to a pair of altogether noteworthy talking points.

First up comes the latest on the future of midfielder Paul Pogba.

The subject of French international Pogba’s contract has of course long taken its place centre stage in the headlines at Old Trafford, ahead of the expiration of his current terms come the campaign’s conclusion.

The widespread assumption throughout has been that the 29-year-old will ultimately opt to move on, in a bid to seek out one final high-profile transfer before entering the twilight years of his career.

In turn, after confirming that Pogba is unlikely to feature over the remaining weeks of the campaign owing to a fresh injury concern, it came as little surprise when the subject of his oft-criticized midfielder’s future was put to Red Devils boss Ralf Rangnick.

And the German, from here, all but confirmed Pogba’s imminent free agent exit:

‘Should not happen’

Rangnick was then drawn on another member of his side’s ranks to have piqued attentions in the buildup to United’s highly-anticipated Premier League showdown with Arsenal.

The player in question? Eric Bailly.

Late on Thursday, stopper Bailly took to Instagram to respond to a comment on the part of a member of the Manchester United fanbase.

The post in question came under a collection of photos from the club’s training ground, reading ‘Start Eric Bailly x Varane’, essentially pleading for captain Harry Maguire to be dropped to the bench at the Emirates this weekend.

And Bailly, in turn, was quick to reveal his support for the message, responding with ‘please’, accompanied by a laughing emoji and a pair of praying hands:

If the ensuing comments on the part of his manager are anything to go by, however, then the Ivorian’s public plea does not appear to have gone down all too well at Old Trafford…

When drawn on the situation by the media on Friday, Ralf Rangnick revealed his take that such antics simply ‘should not happen in a football club, no matter the league’:

Joel Embiid has reportedly suffered an injury that has caused him to experience some pain and discomfort in his right thumb, according to Ramona Shelburne.

Regardless, Embiid practiced on Friday. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the extent of the damage was a torn ligament in his right thumb. The Kansas product will continue to play and will reportedly rely on his pain tolerance and the care of the 76ers medical team to help him.

According to Yahoo Sports, Embiid also suffered a wrist injury during the 76ers’ Game 3 win. The injury has left the MVP candidate wearing a brace around his right hand.

“He’s good,” Coach Dic Rivers said about Embiid, per Yahoo Sports. “Yeah.”

Embiid was able to practice fully, according to Rivers.

“We did a lot of stuff,” said Rivers. “We just don’t want anybody hit his arm and all that so he was fine.”

Texas A&M Commit Janiah Barker is Ready For The Next Level

It’s been a year full of surprises and accomplishments for Montverde Academy star Janiah Barker. Earlier this year, the No. 3 recruit in the Class of 2022 earned Burger Girl status when she was named a McDonald’s All American, and earlier this month she helped lead her squad to a Geico National Championship. On Wednesday, the five-star senior announced that she’ll be taking her undeniable talents to Texas A&M and suiting up for the Aggies, making her the highest-ranked signee for the program since Chennedy Carter.

Barker had initially committed to the University of Georgia but changed her mind after former Bulldogs head coach Joni Taylor left the program for Texas A&M this spring. Other top 2022 Georgia commits like Sydney Bowles and Tineya Hylton also decided to join her in the Lone Star State.

“I’m excited to start something new, especially with coach Joni,” Barker said back in February when asked about playing for Taylor. “She’s been there but it’s her era now, I want to help her get to where she’s wanting to go…Hopefully, get her a national championship, that’s what I’ve told her. I’m gonna give her one in one of my four years.”

On the court, the 6-3 forward means business, and in 21 games this season, she averaged 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds. With her talent and confidence making it look easy to dismantle opposing offenses, Barker attests her confidence to her work ethic and the support she’s received from her family.  “You can only be confident in something you know you’ve been working on,” Barker tells WSLAM. “I just want to be the best. I want to be the best. With that, your work ethic has to be incredible [and] more than anybody. I have to be [in] over time, [putting up] extra shots, in the gym when everybody’s not, [being] the first person there. It can be a lot, but a lot comes with being the best.”

The best is exactly what the future Aggie has her eyes set on becoming, and even with all of her accomplishments, Barker isn’t slowing down any time soon, as she gets ready to enter a new chapter.

“It’s really surreal,” Barker says. “I’m on a USA team, I got 2 gold medals. That is something that everybody has not done. That is not normal, that’s rare.”

“I thank God I’ve done it, but I don’t see myself in that type of top-tier aspect. And maybe one day it’ll click, and I’ll give myself those props. But right now, I just see myself as me and I just see it like, ‘I did that, it’s an accomplishment.’ There’s more to do than what I’ve done and I just want to keep building, keep going.”

Draymond Green On Winning Game 3 In Denver

The Golden State Warriors took a commanding 3-0 lead in their first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets after a 118-113 win in the Mile High city. Veteran forward Draymond Green had a crucial steal in the final minute against reigning MVP Nikola Jokic that helped the Warriors close out the game on a 9-2 run.

In the post-game press conference, Green explained how he was not worried about how many fouls he had but about stopping the Nuggets’ best player from making a play in the final minutes.

“You can’t play defense the final minutes of the game and worry about fouling out,” Green said. “If I do that, I’ll be doing my team a disservice. I’m going against the Joker. I have to be willing to use all six of my fouls at some point.”

Green followed up by talking about the importance of winning on the road, especially in a playoff atmosphere, and taking advantage of silencing an away crowd.

“That’s what it’s all about going into an opposing team’s building and shutting that crowd up; it doesn’t get much better than that. There is no better feeling in sports than entering a hostile environment, and the crowd is yelling and booing, and ultimately you come out with the victory. It’s hard to duplicate that feeling and rush you get from experiences like that. For me, I enjoy the boos and everything that comes with it. I always say the real ones show up and make plays on the road, and then some people just show up at home.”

The Warriors look to complete the sweep on Sunday in Denver to advance to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

REPORT: Robert Williams Expected to Play Limited Minutes in Return

EDITOR’S NOTE: According to League insider Adrian Wojnarowski, Robert Williams intends on returning for Game 3 and will be playing in limited minutes on Saturday.

Celtics center Robert Williams is expected to return for the Boston Celtics in Games 3 or 4 of their first-round matchup against the Brooklyn Nets. Williams tore his left meniscus on March 27 and was listed out for the season.

Williams participated in a five-on-five this week with the team per Shams Charania of The Athletic, and the team will have a final decision before Game 3 on Saturday. The Celtics currently lead the series 2-0 against the Nets. With the series transitioning to Brooklyn, Williams will be a significant addition to the rolling Celtics team with the entire roster available.

Coach Ime Udoka told Celtics beat reporter Justin Leger that this is the best time for Williams to be with the team, especially in the playoffs.

“This is the time of year we want him around the team camaraderie-wise and his impact just being around the group, to be in that playoff atmosphere,” Udoka said. “He’s had no setbacks, and that benchmark of where we aimed of 4-6 weeks is looking good. We’re happy with his progress.”

Game 3 of the Celtics and Nets series will be on Saturday in Barclays Center.

Karl-Anthony Towns On Game 3 Loss At Home: ‘This One Hurts’

The Minnesota Timberwolves blew a 26-point lead in the Game 3 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies at the Target Center. Karl-Anthony Towns was not impressed with being down 2-1 in the series and believes Game 4 will be their chance to bounce back.

“We gotta come in with a desperate mindset and do whatever it takes to win this series,” Towns said.”The same way we got up 26 is the same way we gotta come back next game and play. This is home court; we’ve been doing a great job at home defending it. We are one of the best teams at home, so we really gotta up our chops on the line next game.”

Towns finished the game with eight points, five rebounds, and one assist. He shot 3-of-4 from the floor and only attempted one three-point shot. The backcourt of D’Angelo Russell and Anthony Edwards led the Wolves in scoring with a combined 41 points.

Towns followed up his statement by saying he has to work through the adversity and that sticking with his teammates will get them through this series.

“Stick with what got us here, believe what we’ve done all year, and continue to believe in through ups and downs like this, Towns said. “This one hurts, and we have some games like that this year and bounced back, so I just hope we can do that game four.”

The Timberwolves look to tie the series on Saturday when they play Game 4 in Target Center.
