No. 1 Senior Lauren Betts is Ready For Her Next Journey at Stanford

This exclusive story appears in SLAM 238. Shop now.

Being Lauren Betts is not for the faint of heart. It’s not just her 6-7 frame, or her glowing confidence—which didn’t come overnight—but because of a basketball résumé that has crowned her as the No. 1 prospect in the graduating class of 2022.

With a top-five college list that included Notre Dame, UConn, South Carolina, Oregon and Stanford, Betts ultimately chose the Cardinal, where she’ll join Hall of Fame coach Tara VanDerveer in the fall.

“I’m honestly most looking forward to being challenged in the classroom and in the gym. I think it’s like the best of both worlds,” Betts says. “It’s going to be tough, but I think it’s going to teach me a lot, to just kind of balance those things, and I think that’s going to give me a lot of opportunities to just learn some life lessons. I think I’m gonna learn a lot from Stanford.

“I don’t want to go to a school where I know I’m going to be, like, the best as soon as I walk in. I want to go to a school where, obviously, my freshman year might not be as amazing as I want [it] to be, but we’ll see what happens. Once I get there, just know that each season is gonna get better and better, and I think that I chose the best school for that.”

The Grandview High (CO) standout’s story begins all the way across the Atlantic Ocean in Spain, when she was introduced to the game at an early age thanks to her dad, Andrew, a former NBA draft pick who spent most of his playing career overseas.

“I think that made me fall in love with the sport,” Betts recalls. “I got to watch my dad, you know, how hard he worked every day, and I got to see him come back and just grind—coming home and having to take a quick nap and then leave again. Just traveling all around the world is something that when I was younger, I obviously wasn’t really excited about because I didn’t get to see him [as often], but as I got older, I thought, honestly, that’s something that I want to do.”

Early on, tuning into her athleticism was tricky as she struggled with adjusting to her lengthy, thin frame. Betts recalls not having much control of her body during her first phase of playing basketball. But with her parents’ athletic genes (her mom was a volleyball standout at Long Beach State), it started to become second nature.

Any worries she had are obviously in the past. She’s gone on to receive back-to-back Gatorade State Player of the Year awards after leading her high school team to a 17-9 record, ultimately winning the Class 5A state title and finishing the season on a 13-game winning streak. In March, she starred in the prestigious McDonald’s All American Game and followed that up at the Jordan Brand Classic in April.

With the move to California looming, she’s focused on enjoying her loved ones before she heads west. But, in the midst of the stardom that comes with being ranked the best in the nation, Betts remains thankful for the moment.

“It’s definitely a dream, and it still hasn’t hit me yet,” she says. “When I started playing basketball, my first goal was just to make varsity, and once I started getting in the gym more and more in training, all these things just kept coming. My family has always taught me to just stay humble and just keep working, so I don’t do that much talking. I kind of just grind, that’s pretty much just what I’ve done. All these things just kept coming, and I just think it’s really cool. Really, I still can’t believe it all.”

Chelsea concern as Real Madrid & Man City set sights on Reece James

Doubts surrounding the future of Chelsea star Reece James are beginning to crop up, amid interest in his services on the part of a pair of European heavyweights, according to reports.

James, of course, has long established himself as an integral member of Thomas Tuchel’s squad in west London.

Just this past season, for example, an evident dip in Chelsea’s performances was noted upon the stopper being forced into an extended spell on the sidelines, with James’ ability on both sides of the ball sorely missed throughout the Blues’ ranks.

And yet, to this point, those in a position of power at Stamford Bridge have failed to reward the Cobham youth product with the kind of financial terms reflective of his key status.

It is understood that James’ current contract, penned back in early 2020, sees the English international take home around £70,000-per-week.

Such a figure makes the 22-year-old one of the lowest-earning members of Chelsea’s senior squad.

And it is precisely this fact which, according to reports, has begun to give rise to doubts surrounding James’ future.

As per Sami Mokbel of The Daily Mail, Chelsea, for their part, appear to be in no rush to offer the club’s defensive standout a new contract, owing to his current terms running through the summer of 2025.

This stance, however, is viewed as a risky one, potentially opening the door to rival clubs, who would of course be ready to offer James a considerable hike on his current wages.

And two such sides understood to be keeping a particularly close eye on the situation come in the form of Manchester City and Real Madrid.

‘News of the contractual impasse will interest City, who view James as their ideal long-term replacement for Kyle Walker,’ it is claimed.

Not only that, but ‘Real Madrid have also been credited with a strong interest in James in recent weeks – with sources confirming to Sportsmail that the Spanish club are monitoring his situation very closely.’

Jayson Tatum Speaks On the Pressures of Playing in the NBA Finals

Despite just being 24-years-old and playing the NBA Finals for the first time in his five-year career, Jayson Tatum has been able to keep playing in the NBA Finals in perspective.

“Just try to remember it’s just basketball at the end of the day,” Tatum said during his media availability, “Try to prepare the same and not get too excited. Just go out there, be relaxed and play your game but still enjoy this. It’s no guarantee that you go to the Finals every year, and it’s a big deal.”

That’s some sage wisdom coming from a young player that’s experienced a good deal of playoff success early in his career. But even Tatum had to know that that level of success wasn’t common so early in his career, especially being a lottery pick like he was. Tatum and Boston went on two runs to the Conference Finals run before they reached the Finals this year.

Tatum and Boston’s journey to get to the championship stage began with a revenge tour throughout the Eastern Conference, eliminating the only teams that have beaten them in the last three postseasons. Boston ended up sweeping the Nets and beating the Bucks and Heat in seven games.

The Finals run almost seemed ordained after Al Horford revealed how he texted Tatum that he was excited to see Boston play on the biggest stage in the basketball world.

Tatum’s Finals debut didn’t go the way he expected, to put it bluntly, scoring 12 points and 13 assists on 3-17 shooting from the field. Despite having difficulty finding the bottom of the net in Game 1, Tatum was able to play a pivotal role as a playmaker, providing the hockey assist for Horford’s and-1 layup to cement Boston’s Game 1.

In Game 2, Tatum bounced back and posted 28 points, six rebounds, and three assists in a 107-88 loss to Golden State but turned the ball over four times.

Tatum finished Game 3 with 26 points, six rebounds, and nine assists. The five-time All-Star took over Boston’s offense in the second half, scoring 15 points to hold off Golden State after they reeled off another signature third-quarter run to close Boston’s lead to 93-89 going into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, Tatum sparked a 9-2 run to close the door on the Warriors’ comeback bid. The Celtics are now up 2-1, heading into Game 4 at TD Garden.

If Tatum and Jaylen Brown (27 points, nine rebounds, five assists in Game 3) continue to ascend and meet the challenge Golden State brings, they could possibly cement their status as Celtics legends as they lead Boston to their first title since 2008.

Leeds & Aston Villa open talks to sign West Ham starlet Perkins

A pair of Premier League rivals have set their sights firmly on the signature of West Ham United starlet Sonny Perkins, according to reports.

The clubs in question? Leeds United and Aston Villa.

As per transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, amongst others, both the Whites and Villans ‘want to sign’ the highly-regarded 18-year-old.

Not only that, but the respective boards at Elland Road and Villa Park have gone as far as to open negotiations in a bid to strike a deal for the attacking midfielder ahead of next season.

This comes with Perkins’ contract at the London Stadium due to expire come the end of the month.

Interest in the English youth international’s signature beginning to ramp up should come as no real surprise. Perkins enjoyed an impressive campaign last time out, on his way to 14 goals between the Premier League 2 and U18 Premier League seasons.

Roca eyed

News of Leeds’ interest in bringing in Perkins comes fresh on the back of word coming to the fore earlier on Thursday that Jesse Marsch’s side have also set their sights on considerably more experienced reinforcements in the middle of the park.

According to Phil Hay of The Athletic, the Peacocks have identified out-of-favour Bayern Munich star Marc Roca as a potential addition to Jesse Marsch’s engine room ranks ahead of next season.

This of course comes with Leeds’ lack of midfield depth having been exposed in a major way across a difficult season which almost cost the club their top-flight status last time out.

‘He’s the real deal’: Mac Jones has taken charge of Patriots’ offense in Year 2 – NFL Nation

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — The question of who calls the plays for the New England Patriots‘ offense lingers, but when it comes to who has taken ownership of the unit on the field, receiver Jakobi Meyers is emphatic.

It’s quarterback Mac Jones.

“Has he taken control of the offense? That’s a capital YES, exclamation mark, exclamation mark,” Meyers said Thursday at the conclusion of the Patriots’ mandatory minicamp. “He’s the real deal. We’re all trying to catch up what’s in his mind, his vision.”

Asked if he feels ownership of the offense in his second season, Jones said: “Yeah, I think that’s the whole point of the quarterback, to lead the guys around you, get them the ball.

“I have the ball every play and I have to make decisions to help the team win. You have to stop from losing before you can win. That’s the goal — do that even better this year.”

Coach Bill Belichick seems to like the progress at this point, as evidenced by his canceling the final practice of mandatory minicamp Thursday and the final two voluntary organized team activities scheduled for next week.

That has been commonplace in recent years, with Belichick rewarding the team for its work, with the belief that a foundation has been established leading into training camp in late July.

Jones, in particular, has made some impressive throws in recent practices. On Wednesday, he had multiple tight-window deliveries down the field — to receivers Tre Nixon and Nelson Agholor, and tight end Jonnu Smith — that had members of the offense celebrating.

Meyers took note of Jones’ command, saying: “I know him and the coaches have been doing a great job of just relaying information to us, but ultimately when we’re out there, he tells us. And we ask him, ‘How do you want it? Where do you want us to be? When do you want us to be there?’

“He’s been really adamant about what he says. He has a clear vision in his mind … we just have to catch the ball he throws.”

Agholor, who had rookie cornerback Jack Jones draped all over him on a “go” route on his long hookup with Jones, added: “He does a great job of communicating, and is working to be the best version of himself.”

Jones’ ownership of the offense was also noted by running back Damien Harris, who was also his teammate at Alabama.

“He’s an incredibly hard worker, that’s what I appreciate about him the most,” Harris said. “Coming out here, seeing the way he leads, [he] works his butt off to be his best in order to help all of us as his teammates be our best.”

As for who will call the plays into Jones, it’s been notable to several players, including the quarterback himself, how involved Belichick has been with the offense. At one point Wednesday during a drill aimed at running backs and how they need to get through the line of scrimmage, Belichick actually snapped the ball to Jones as a center.

“He’s very hands-on. Last year, he was more with the defense. But now, it’s like, ‘OK, let me show you this’ and he’s kind of coaching us,” Jones said. “I feel like we’ve made a lot of growth together as an offensive unit with him.

“He’s seen the most amount of football of any of our coaches. He’s seen defense, offense and special teams, so having his input is always going to be very beneficial to me, because he knows what puts stress on the defense.”

Assistants Matt Patricia (offensive line) and Joe Judge (quarterbacks) have also had leading roles at times.

All of this has taken place after Belichick said the offense has been “streamlined” this offseason, similar to what he did with the defense in 2019-20. In essence, the Patriots have simplified things, with Jones saying it’s aimed at playing faster.

Jones was asked to describe his comfort level with the coaching setup now that there have been a handful of practices to assess.

“The most important thing is getting on the same page, speaking the same lingo, between the players, the coaches, and we’ve done a good job of that,” he said.

“I definitely think we made pretty good strides there in the past couple weeks. You can’t be done with OTAs and let that fall off. You have to carry that through the season, that’s the most important part. We understand that for training camp. We have to keep communicating and keep talking.”

Team Melo is on a Mission to Build Successful Student-Athletes

This exclusive story appears in SLAM 238. Shop now.

Giving back to the game that raised you is an admirable notion that should be praised by hoopers all across the world, no matter how small the gesture. You can cross that notion off of Carmelo Anthony’s to-do list.

In 2005, Anthony co-founded Team Melo, a non-profit organization based out of Baltimore that’s dedicated to helping student-athletes on and off the court.

“Not only do we do basketball, but we also mentor, [have] after-school programming—it’s another component to [Anthony’s] charitable work,” Team Melo president and cofounder Robert “Bay” Frazier explains. “We do back-to-school drives, Thanksgiving drives, it’s everything—it’s all inclusive, just giving back to the youth in Baltimore.”

This individualized helping hand is what truly separates Team Melo from other AAU programs. A prime example is Cam Whitmore, a Villanova commit and Team Melo member of five years who attests to the huge impact Carmelo has had on his life.

“He invited me over to his house to work out with him, just giving me some teaching points about the specifics. Like the midpost game, stuff like that. And in the outside world, [he told me], Just remain humble, everything else will come toward you, just keep moving,” says Whitmore.

Don’t let their off-court kindness fool you, though: Team Melo has some serious hoopers on their roster.

The 17U team is a member of the prestigious Nike EYBL circuit, with eight of its 10 players currently holding college offers, according to Frazier. A notable alumni you may hear about come draft time in June is All-Big East First Team forward Justin Lewis from Marquette.

With travel and gear all paid for, players only have to worry about one thing: showing up and balling out. For Frazier, the end result is about much more than just the scoreboard.

“It’s the glory of seeing the guys become successful. They don’t all have to make it to the NBA, it’s about going to college, enjoying college and coming back to me, like, Man, Bay, you’ve been a blessing to me, and their parents saying that. I love that, I love that part. That’s what I get out of it.”

Tyler Lockett opens up about playing through mental health struggles

Seattle Seahawks star wide receiver Tyler Lockett candidly shared on Twitter about how he has dealt with mental health issues in the NFL, even during games.

It’s no longer Mental Health Awareness Month, but creating conversation around mental health struggles is something that matters year-round.

It’s especially important for athletes, who serves as role models all while experiencing unique mental health struggles, to be transparent about what they’re going through whenever possible. Although professional athletes achieve some of the greatest emotional highs imaginable, there are also unparalleled lows in losses, which can create anxiety, depression, and self-esteem that is rooted in performance.

To combat the stigma around mental health issues and show the world what living with them looks like, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett shared a powerful account about how he spent at least two of his seven NFL seasons struggling with depression and anxiety.

Lockett says that he “almost quit”, but that season turned out to be his “best year.”

“I played through trauma another year and had my best year,” he continued. “Moral of the story: Just keep going. You never know what’s waiting on the other side!”

Seahawks star Tyler Lockett opens up about mental health struggles during NFL season

Lockett continued to share on why he remains thankful that he persevered through difficult seasons.

“Looking back now, I’m so happy I kept going,” Lockett wrote. “I’m a strong-minded person, and when faced with mental health situations, I tried to hurry up and fix it like if I got hurt at practice, got treatment for a day, and I’m good. But with mental health, you have to be real with yourself.”

“It’s easy to operate in life when you live through your strengths,” Lockett continued. “But these last couple years, I had to live and rely on my weaknesses to get me through. I been more patient with myself than I’ve ever been. I had to learn that my mindset wasn’t the only way.”

In May, former Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen penned an emotional piece on how many NFL fans have no idea what NFL players are going through in their personal lives. Cohen spoke about how his entire time with the Bears, he worried over his two younger brothers and sought to protect his family as best he could. Facing unimaginable tragedy, Cohen was still looking for a path back into the league when he recently tore his Achilles tendon during a practice.

Atlanta Hawks superstar and mental health advocate Trae Young recently spoke with FanSided about how he, like Lockett, remains positive in challenging moments.

“I guess I really just try to focus on positive things in the games and moments,” Young said. “I don’t try to get too down. There’s this long season, so you’re gonna have losses, but you try to focus on the positive things, and I’ve had to learn that. It’s not something that was with me since day one, but I’ve had people that I’ve talked to that have helped me with this.”

Recently, some very positive news came Lockett’s way: Pro Football Focus named Lockett and DK Metcalf among the top 25 wide receivers in the NFL.

Richarlison hits back at claims of push for Everton exit

Everton star Richarlison has, on Thursday, taken to social media to respond to claims in the media that he is pushing for a move away from the club ahead of next season.

Speculation surrounding the name of Brazilian international Richarlison has of course been rampant in the media for some time now.

This comes with Everton understood to be in dire straits financially, and in need of an imminent cash injection.

Richarlison, fresh off another solid individual campaign which saw him rack up 11 goals and five assists despite the Toffees being forced into an unlikely battle against Premier League relegation, is therefore viewed as one of few potential avenues towards such funds.

To this point, the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have all been namedropped in the press as expressing a keen interest in Richarlison’s services.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND – MAY 01: Richarlison celebrates with a flare after scoring their team’s first goal during the Premier League match between Everton and Chelsea at Goodison Park on May 01, 2022 in Liverpool, England. (Photo by Jan Kruger/Getty Images)

Upon word beginning to spread over the last 48 hours that the 25-year-old had informed those in a position of power at Goodison Park of his desire to move on, those of an Everton persuasion were therefore left with little choice but to face up to the reality that their long-time attacking star would not be lining out in the colours of the Blues beyond the summer.

As alluded to above, though, if the latest social media activity on the part of Richarlison himself is anything to go by, then such an outcome may not yet be a foregone conclusion.

In a post on his official Twitter account a short time ago, the ex-Watford star responded to claims that:

‘Richarlison wants to leave Everton and has asked to be traded. The player gave preference to three clubs: Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.’

Evidently taking issue with suggestions that he is pushing for a Merseyside departure, though, the Brazilian replied:

‘It’s crazy who trusts these sources’

Andy Reid’s comments on Josh Gordon will excite fans

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had nice things to say about wide receiver Josh Gordon in minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs offense is going to look different this upcoming season, and it is due to one huge absence in their passing attack. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill was traded to the Miami Dolphins and immediately signed a four-year contract extension. Now it is up to everyone on the depth chart to step up and help keep up the production.

Head coach Andy Reid likes what he has seen from one pass-catcher in particular, and it is a player that has been on the roster last year. That wide receiver is Josh Gordon.

“He’s running better, he’s catching better and he’s working hard,” Reid said, h/t ProFootballTalk. “He’s a good kid and he’s smart, so that helps. That’s the way he’s approached this whole thing, and he’s getting reps.”

Andy Reid praises Josh Gordon in minicamp

Gordon joined the Chiefs on a one-year deal in 2021 after he was reinstated by the NFL. Earlier in the year, he played for the Zappers of the Fan Controlled Football League.

In 12 games, Gordon caught five passes for 32 yards and a touchdown on 14 targets. In his career, Gordon recorded 252 receptions for 4,284 yards and 21 touchdowns through 75 games between the Chiefs, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Even though the Chiefs did lose Hill this offseason, they did make some additions. They signed JuJu Smith-Schuster to a one-year contract and secured Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a three-year deal. In the draft, they used their second-round selection on Central Michigan wide receiver Skyy Moore. They then signed former Clemson star receiver Justyn Ross as an undrafted free agent.

Thus far this offseason, Reid has liked what he saw out of Gordon.

Justin Fields hitting bombs at Wrigley Field has Cubs fans thinking

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields was seen hitting home runs at Wrigley Field during Cubs batting practice. Could he be a two-sport star?

This is not a question to be taken literally, of course. Fields is committed to football, as he should be considering the Bears are in the midst of a rebuild.

Fields was a highly-touted shortstop back in high school in Georgia, and while he didn’t play baseball in college to focus on his football career, Fields was recruited to the diamond during his time at Ohio State. After thinking over the matter, he opted not to take the Kyler Murray route and play both sports.

Fields decision to play football clearly worked out, as he was drafted in the first round by the Bears, and is now their starting quarterback making millions of dollars on his rookie deal. But that doesn’t mean he can’t take some hacks.

Bears: Justin Fields hit bombs at Wrigley Field

Fields is an avid supporter of Chicago sports, and hasn’t chosen an allegiance between the Cubs and White Sox. He’s thrown out the first pitch at Guaranteed Rate Field on the South Side. Fields is a man of the people.

Is there anything more Chicago sports than the quarterback of the beloved Bears hanging out at Wrigley, though? Fields still has plenty of work to do on the football field before he’s a reliable passer, and the long-term answer at quarterback. Chicago believes him to be the future, and he’ll have time to prove them right.

As for his baseball career — let’s put that on hold for now, despite the impressive swing.
