Ajax set hefty price tags on Manchester United and Arsenal targets

Ajax set hefty price tags on Manchester United and Arsenal targets

Ajax have warned that it will cost hefty sums to coax more players away from the Amsterdam club this summer amid interest from Arsenal and Manchester United.

The Dutch title-winners have already lost manager Erik ten Hag, who has joined Manchester United. They have also lost a quartet of players, with Nasser Mazrouai and Ryan Gravenberch both joining Bayern Munich, Andre Onana joining Inter Milan and Sebastien Haller joining Borrusia Dortmund.

They could be set to lose yet more players too, with all of Jurrien Timber, Lisandro Martinez and Antony garnering interest from the Premier League.

Ajax set hefty price tags

As per Telegraaf, however, they will not being going anywhere on the cheap, with Ajax having already raked in over 50m euros this summer.

Should Manchester United want to add Antony to their side, Ajax will demand a fee of between 70m and 80m euros (£60m-£69m), which would make him an expensive acquisition in addition to Frenkie de Jong.

Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber, who the Red Devils are also keen on, is set to be valued at 50m euros (£43m too).

Another player that both Arsenal and Manchester United are reportedly keen on is left-sided defender Lisandro Martinez, but the Argentine is also set to command a 50m euro fee this summer.

Arsenal have already seen one bid, thought to be around the 30m euro mark, rejected, and will have to up their bid significantly to land their man even before Manchester United’s interest is considered.

Should these prices be met, it could be a record summer for Ajax, but leave them a massive rebuilding job once more.

Ravens share heartfelt condolences on death of 26-year-old linebacker Jaylon Ferguson

The Baltimore Ravens are “profoundly saddened by the tragic passing” of 26-year-old outside linebacker Jaylon Ferguson, according to a statement.

The recent, untimely deaths of young NFL players, from Demaryius Thomas to Dwayne Haskins to Jeff Gladney, have deeply impacted the lives of all of those affected throughout the NFL.

On Wednesday morning, the news that 26-year-old Ravens outside linebacker Jaylon Ferguson had died profoundly impacted his team. The Ravens remember Jaylon as “a kind, respectful young man with a big smile and infectious personality.”

“We express our heartfelt condolences to Jaylon’s family and friends as we mourn a life lost much too soon.”

Ravens share poignant message on the untimely passing of Jaylon Ferguson

As with the other heartbreaking young deaths seen this offseason, including 24-year-old Haskins and 25-year-old Gladney, who both died in car accidents, NFL teammates are expressing their grief on social media.

Baltimore Sun reporter Jonas Shaffer shared several photos of Jaylon with his family, including ones in which he is doting on his young children. Ferguson has a daughter and son, Jyce and Jrea.

The Zachary, Louisiana native was affectionately known as “Sack Daddy”, as he made 45 career sacks during his time at Louisiana Tech.

Ferguson still holds the NCAA record for most career sacks, which he recorded from 2015 to 2018. Ferguson’s NCAA record ranks ahead of notable NFL defensive ends like Von Miller, Josh Allen, Myles Garrett and Chase Young.

Ferguson was selected by the Ravens in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft with the No. 85 pick. In three years with the Ravens, Ferguson recorded 4.5 career sacks and 67 total tackles.

While no official cause of death has been released, Baltimore Banner’s Justin Fenton reported that Ferguson was found not breathing, and a source indicates that it was the result of a “suspected overdose.”

From Ravens flock and across the NFL, condolences for the loss of Jaylon Ferguson continue to pour in as the league reflects on another life lost much too soon.

Basketball in the Baltics – a rich but difficult history

After a recent picture went viral on Reddit, a map denoting the most popular sports in each country around the world, many people were surprised to see basketball top the bill in various countries. Though if you were a regular reader of Sports Mania, you would struggle to believe that soccer wasn’t the dominant sport in every country.

China and the Philippines took some people by surprise, particularly given that the average height in these countries is significantly smaller than that of the US. But, that isn’t stopping anyone from their passion for the game – nor does it mean they don’t know how to throw it down.

What was less surprising, but failed to encapsulate the rich history, was the inclusion of the Baltic countries. All three of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are big fans of basketball – more so than any other sport.

1930s

It’s not just a matter of these being dairy-eating countries of extreme heights, but they’re also very good at the game. In 1935, Latvia won the first European championship in Switzerland. Given the light-hearted rivalry between Latvia and Lithuania, the latter decided to recruit some of their talented Lithuanian-American players (i.e. Frank Lubin), issuing them passports in response to Latvia’s win.

Unsurprisingly, two years later Lithuania had won the European championship in 1937, and then won it again in 1939 – the second time being at home in the Kaunas Sports hall. During this decade, Estonia too found themselves a sport they were good at, coming 9th in the 1936 Olympic games – impressive for a country with such a small population – and 5th in the 1937 and 1939 EuroBasket championship.

This success in the 30s kicked off a long love for the game, particularly for Latvia and Lithuania. This is a bit like Uraguay and soccer – the country won the first-ever world cup in 1930 and then won it again in 1950. Since then, they have been totally consumed by the sport, with it being a strong part of their national identity.

Nazi and Soviet period: 1940 – 1990

Coming off the back of such proud national identity and sporting success, the Baltic countries all fell victim to a long, gruelling generational period of occupation and oppression. In the 1940s, there were mass deportations implemented by the soviets after the fall of Nazi Germany. Despite such devastating occupation, basketball remained at the core of the countries’ leisure, being one part of their identity that lived on through Soviet times.

Unfortunately, such basketball endeavours would have to be played under the Soviet regime, meaning the Baltic countries have a ~50 year period in their history where they had technically not participated in any basketball events of their own; instead, reluctantly representing the Soviet Union on the sporting stage.

Technically, during this period the Soviet Union did see a lot of basketball success – no surprise really, as the teams were made of great Baltic players like Stepas Betautas and Arvydas Sabonis. They had won the EuroBasket twice in the 50s, 6 times in the 60s, 4 times in the 70s, and 4 times in the 80s.

90s Onwards – Near Olympic Success

After the fall of the Soviet Union and regaining their national independence, the love of basketball began to shine once again but this time in a way they can truly get behind. This is where Lithuania ended up ahead of the three countries when it came to basketball talent.

Lithuania went on to make a big impact on the world stage in 1992 when they got bronze at the Olympics in Barcelona. Coming right after independence and overperforming given their tiny population and lack of resources, the events inspired a film to be created, titled “The Other Dream Team” – which documents the story of the 1992 Olympics for Lithuania in the aftermath of gaining independence.

If that wasn’t enough, Lithuania went on to win bronze at the next two consecutive Olympics, in 1996 and 2000. During this glory period, Lithuania had also come second in the EuroBasket in 1995 and won the championship in 2003. Furthermore, despite the resources and popularity behind basketball increasing throughout Europe, Lithuania managed to get silver in the EuroBasket in 2013 and 2015, too.

2022 and beyond

Basketball remains to be the number one sport in Lithuania by far, and although it’s close, it’s possibly the number one sport in Estonia and Latvia too. It’s true that football is widely watched and played, but with no real international competitive presence there, the nations get behind their basketball teams more than anything.

Although Latvia did not qualify, Estonia and Lithuania are both qualified to play in the 2022 EuroBasket which is set to go ahead in September – Estonia had scraped by with 2 wins and 4 losses during qualification, whilst Lithuania won 4 and lost 2. Although there may be some friendly local rivalry between the Baltics, they undoubtedly support each other in basketball when it comes to national events. A shared troubled history with a shared passion for the game.

Mike Tomlin puts Antonio Brown Steelers return rumors to rest

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has no time for speculation over Antonio Brown returning to Pittsburgh, shutting down any talk on a new podcast appearance.

Mike Tomlin has a huge amount of respect for Antonio Brown and what he accomplished with the Steelers.

That doesn’t mean the head coach is open to the receiver returning to the team.

Tomlin appeared on The Pivot Podcast this week and talked extensively about Brown and his impact on the football field. But first, he shot down any notion of him being on the Steelers roster again.

Mike Tomlin puts Antonio Brown Steelers return rumors to rest

“Y’all know that ain’t happening,” Tomlin said. “In terms of putting a helmet on and running out of the tunnel and playing ball and stuff like that, man. You know he’s moved on, we’ve moved on.”

He called the idea “not realistic.”

This all stems from Brown making waves about wanting to retire as a Steeler. He tweeted about it and also expressed that desire on his own episode of The Pivot Podcast.

Tomlin didn’t rule out the prospect of Brown getting a one-day contract to officially retire as a Steeler, so that possibility still seems on the table. He just definitely won’t play for Pittsburgh again.

Does Brown deserve to get the one-day contract and retirement treatment?

Sure, he was a seven-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion with the franchise. He also forced his way out of town by sowing seeds of discontent in the Pittsburgh locker room and has been accused of sexual misconduct on multiple occasions. That’s not even mentioning instances of erratic and violent behavior including an altercation with Raiders GM Mike Mayock and charges of battery and burglary in 2020.

The Steelers will have to decide if they want to buy another ticket to the circus for that one.

Ndamukong Suh’s latest tweet should make Raiders fans cautiously happy

Ndamukong Suh isn’t planning to return to the Buccaneers and it looks like he’s publicly targeting the Raiders as a possible destination.

At 35 years old, Ndamukong Suh isn’t ready to hang up his cleats just yet. He’s also pretty much ruled out playing for the Buccaneers again in 2022.

So where will he land next?

Las Vegas seems to be his preferred destination.

Ndamakong Suh said playing for the Raiders “could be fun”

“Raiders could be fun,” Suh commented on Adam Schefter’s tweet about the defensive lineman likely leaving the Buccaneers on Tuesday.

Whether or not Vegas is mutually interested in Suh is up for debate. Tyler Dragon of USA Today reported that the “Raiders and Vikings have both had multiple conversations with the free-agent DT.”

However, Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Josina Anderson of CBS Sports told a different tale a little while later.

Anderson reported that “the Raiders are not currently in pursuit.”

Bonsignore echoed that with a tweet saying right now “[Suh’s] interest does not appear to be mutual.”

So which is it? Bonsignore is hooked into the Raiders and Anderson has good sources. The weight of their reporting on this one beats out Dragon’s.

Of course, both linked their understanding to the current moment. Things do change quickly in the NFL and Suh’s public interest could certainly open the door for conversations.

Suh is coming off a campaign in 2021 with six sacks and 13 QB hits. While he hasn’t been the All-Pro level player he was in the first half of his career, he’s been consistently productive over the last few years.

If the Raiders can afford him, the addition could make a major impact in the trenches. However, there should be serious competition for his services. If Las Vegas isn’t invested in the pursuit, don’t expect it to end in their favor.

Angel McCoughtry and adidas Refurbish ‘Reach For the Stars’ Court

Angel McCoughtry has been manifesting this moment for a long time now. The WNBA All-Star had thought of refurbishing and designing her own basketball court years ago but had never actually acted on it until now. After throwing the idea out to adidas, McCoughtry admits that initially, she wasn’t entirely sure what would come out of it.

To her surprise, the Three Stripes not only rocked with her vision but wanted to turn her dream of having her own court and, more importantly, giving back to the community into a reality.

“I’m like, Oh, my God, are you serious?” McCoughtry says over Zoom of her reaction when she found out adidas wanted to help her put the project together.

This past Friday, the five-time gold medalist and adidas unveiled the newly refurbished “Reach for the Stars” basketball court at Shively Park. They started organizing everything for the refurbishing last fall—while opting to begin painting in the summertime to ensure the paint would dry—and the result is a vibrant and intricately designed court, created by Project Backboard, with an array of colors and geometrically shaped patterns.

McCoughtry says she specifically wanted reds to be included in the mural’s color scheme because it represents both Louisville and the community. There are also hints of yellow and her favorite color, purple.

“There’s just hints of all kinds of colors that just brighten it up. It’s just really going to attract everybody to the court and to that area.”

Located less than 10 minutes away from the University of Louisville campus, the court also features a stunning portrait of a women’s basketball player lifting her hands in the air in triumph.

“I think what the mural symbolizes is just overcoming adversity,” McCoughtry says over Zoom, just days before the court’s unveiling. “Being a champion. There’s so much emotion behind it, and that’s what I love about the court. It’s a woman’s face, a Black woman. You don’t really see many courts with a woman figure.”

There’s also the phrase “Reach for the Stars” written in her handwriting on the court, which also happens to be the title of her latest single. For McCoughtry, the opportunity to intertwine her love for the game with her passion for music makes that detail even more special.

“I’ve been doing music for so long, and, of course, basketball has been my number one passion, but I’ve done it for a while. Many people don’t know that, and I just never really promoted to that level, it’s just [like] I put it out, and whoever likes it likes it, and I keep it moving, I go play basketball. But with this, just to have a connection with the court, reaching for the stars, and then they can download the song and actually be inspired by the song as well. I don’t think we’ve heard anybody do that. With adidas, we are definitely setting the bar high. We are definitely breaking barriers. I’m really excited about that part just for people to see, like, Wow, you can really do anything. That’s what my speech is going to be to the kids on that day, like; I just started playing basketball at eight. I just love the game. So if you find something you love, it can take you places you’ve never imagined. I’m standing right now on a basketball court that I helped create with adidas. So, it’s amazing.”

Growing up in Baltimore, the five-time gold medalist admits that the courts were “rough,” At the time, she didn’t see anyone, from big names to brands, coming in to refurbish the space for young hoopers like herself to play on. She heard a lot about Shively Park during her time at Louisville, and while she mainly spent most of her time on campus and in the program’s training facilities, she did pass by it once or twice.

To be a part of the court’s revamping is a full-circle moment for McCoughtry, as it represents not only her own chance to give back to the community, but she hopes it will inspire more female hoopers to “know their value” and have courts of their own.

“I think that is going to start to spiral more women [and] next thing you know; more women will have courts. I assume you could see Sue Bird have one and Breanna Stewart. I’m sure they’re like, whoa, you know? That’s the goal: for more women to do these kinds of things and to inspire (them) to set the bar high. I think it’s time for us to start setting the bar high in our worth and our value and what we can bring.”

It’s also about the next generation of female hoopers paving the way for future opportunities to arise, too. McCoughtry has continued to be an inspiration throughout her career—her resume includes numerous gold medals, WNBA Rookie of the Year, five WNBA All-Star appearances, and earned All-WNBA First Team honors twice.

Lately, she’s been spending time recovering from significant knee injuries that caused her to miss the 2021 WNBA season, but as of now, she says she’s been back in the gym and is in a good place.

“I went to the gym yesterday to just play; I felt really, really good where I’m at. I gave my agent the okay to talk to teams, so I think very soon, by the All-Star break. I’m really excited to get back out there.”

And now, having a court with her image on it only adds to her illustrious legacy. She’s not stopping there, though, and hopes that the refurbished court at Shively Park will create even more opportunities for both herself and the future of women’s basketball.

“I will say this is definitely something that leaves a legacy. Even after I retire, I can go on and see that, wow, there’s a court. These are things that last forever—my grandkids can come and see that court. It’s amazing, and sometimes it’s like winning a championship ring, right? The championship ring doesn’t really have its value until 20 years later, 10 years later. You see how we go back and look at what Magic Johnson’s done or Michael Jordan or Lisa Leslie because the value increases as the years go by. That’s how I feel about the court; I think just the value will continue to increase. And off the court, I already talked [NBA] 2K, you know they have the WNBA side of it, [and I’m like], hey, this is an opportunity. The court to be in the video game. There (are) so many ideas and ways to maneuver with it, and (it) talks about putting the music in the video game on the WNBA side. Not even just the W side; put it on the whole video game!

But hey, just the fact that they’re loving my idea and being able to pitch that part is just amazing. Whoever thought the WNBA players would be in the video game anyway? Now I’m talking about our assets, our courts, (and) our music in video games, too. We’re taking this to a whole other level.”

Arsenal submit opening offer for Raphinha with Gabriel Jesus move ‘very advanced’

Arsenal have submitted a formal opening offer for Leeds United winger Raphinha, but it has fallen well short of the Yorkshire side’s valuation of the player and is expected to be rejected immediately, according to the Athletic.

Worse still for Arsenal fans, they add that the Gunners are Raphinha’s third choice destination this summer, behind Barcelona and fellow Premier League side Chelsea.

As per The Athletic, the bid made ‘fell well below Leeds’ valuation and is expected to be rejected out of hand’.

‘After Barcelona, Chelsea are said to be Raphinha’s preferred destination and not only would a move there provide Champions League football but potentially also a better chance of winning major trophies’, the reliable David Ornstein claims.

Meanwhile, Raphinha’s agent Deco has been in Barcelona this evening, where he met with Juan Laporta.

Arsenal close to landing Jesus

In more positive news for the Gunners, it seems as though they are closing in, inch by inch, on the signing of Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus, with the deal now ‘very very advanced’ according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, though interest from Paris Saint Germain and Tottenham remains.

And, while there are a couple of final details to be ironed out, the Gunners continue to lead the way at present.

Manchester United’s chase of Frenkie de Jong: The Latest

It is no secret that Manchester United have made Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong their no.1 priority for this transfer window, with new boss Erik ten Hag keen to work with the 25-year-old once more following their successful spell together at Ajax.

However, the deal has proved far more slow-moving than many on both sides would have liked, with reports of De Jong’s unwillingness to go and Barcelona and Manchester United’s distance when it comes to transfer fee littering the media.

(l-r) Frenkie de Jong of Ajax, Ajax coach Erik ten Hag during the Florida Cup 2019 match between Ajax Amsterdam v Sao Paulo FC at Orlando City Stadium on January 12, 2019 in Orlando, United States(Photo by VI Images via Getty Images)

And, despite weeks of the same rumours dragging on, it appears that little has changed. That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who claims that despite direct contact on Tuesday afternoon, no agreement has been reached on a fee.

This comes with Barcelona demanding at least 86m euros (£74m) for the deal to be struck, something that the Red Devils view as unrealistic.

Moreover, the Blaugrana want it all as guaranteed fees, rather than including add on potential, in order for them to be able to spend more on strengthening their own squad this summer.

Barcelona target Bernardo Silva

Should a deal for De Jong be able to be struck, Xavi will turn his attentions to Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, who he views as a key part of his project at the Camp Nou.

However, it would require a similar sort of fee to the one that they themselves are demanding for De Jong, which would leave them cash-strapped in their pursuits of Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde and Raphinha, all of whom they have shown strong interest in.

Tom Brady posts emotional statement to Gronk after retirement news

Tom Brady posts emotional statement to Rob Gronkowski after retirement announcement.

Rob Gronkowski is retiring from football (again) but this time it’s probably going to stick. The eternal sidekick of NFL GOAT Tom Brady retired once before and then un-retired when Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Gronkowski joined Brady on the gridiron for two more seasons, winning the Super Bowl with him again.

But on Tuesday announced he’s finally done.

Tom Brady reflects on friendship, career alongside Rob Gronkowski

Shortly after the news broke Brady posted a lengthy statement to his friend upon his retirement.

“Teammate, friend, brother, just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of @gronk. Nobody has ever embodied the idea of ‘leaving it all out on the field’ like Rob has throughout his entire career. Every single snap, I knew that no matter how many people you put in front of him, he was going to get to his spot.

Even more important is the person he was off the field. Focused when he had to be, and FUN the rest of the time. Having Gronk in your locker room was every NFL players dream. I’m proud of all that we’ve accomplished together, and even more excited for all you have ahead of you.

Congrats Gronk, you deserve it.”

Gronk confirmed the retirement news with a social media post of his own, writing:

“In college, I was asked to write about a dream job opportunity that I wanted to pursue and where the location would be. Every time I had to write about my future, no matter what, I picked being a professional football player,” he wrote on Instagram. “For that assignment though, we had to pick the location. So I wrote that I wanted to play in Tampa for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for many reasons, the sunny weather being #1. I completely forgot about writing this report until 2 years ago when I had the opportunity to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And let me tell ya, the journey in Tampa over the last 2 years has blown away what I originally wrote about in college, big time. And for this, I want to thank the whole entire first-class Buccaneers organization for an amazing ride, trusting me to come back to play and help build a championship team. I will now be going back into my retirement home, walking away from football again with my head held high knowing I gave it everything I had, good or bad, every time I stepped out on the field. The friendships and relationships I have made will last forever, and I appreciate every single one of my teammates and coaches for giving everything they had as well. From retirement, back to football and winning another championship and now back to chilling out, thank you to all. Buccaneers fans, the Krewe, without you guys, none of this is possible, all of ya brought it every game, thank you for all you do. Cheers to what’s next, maybe sailing the seas   Arghhhhhh!!”

Many have wondered if Brady would be retiring after the 2022 season and now those rumors are sure to intensify with Gronk making things official.
