Miami Dolphins excited about Channing Tindall’s ‘versatility, speed’ – NFL Nation

MIAMI — The Miami Dolphins had four picks in this year’s NFL draft, including just one in the first three rounds. But in the third round (102nd overall), they grabbed a player who is an ideal fit for their defensive scheme.

Georgia linebacker Channing Tindall flew somewhat under the radar playing on a defense that included linebackers Nakobe Dean and Quay Walker. In fact, he was the ninth of the Bulldogs’ record 15 players selected this past weekend.

Despite the star power around him, the Dolphins never lost sight of Tindall throughout the pre-draft process.

“He was a player that we had been targeting throughout the process,” general manager Chris Grier said. “We met with him in Indianapolis [at the NFL combine] and really enjoyed our time with him. We brought him down here on a [top] 30 visit, spent a lot of time with him here as well. For us, it’s the versatility, the speed is what we like. He can play, he has the ability to play all three downs and play special teams, as well.

“In talking to [Georgia coach] Kirby Smart the other day again about him, he was just talking about what tremendous speed and toughness and the character of the kid and how Kirby really loved [Tindall] and thinks he’s going to be a really good player in the NFL.”

After playing sparingly in his first three seasons with the Bulldogs, Tindall turned in his best collegiate season as a senior in 2021, posting 67 tackles, 5.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss.

He called his uptick in production the result of extra time spent with Georgia linebackers coach Glenn Schumann, and a renewed mentality entering the season.

“I just took extra time and watched film with him. I feel like I knew what I had to do,” Tindall said. “I was on a mission before the season started … like I have to get this done. I would say the biggest thing is probably just my mindset. My mindset was do or die.”

How Tindall was used last season helps in deciphering what his role with the Dolphins will be, particularly as a rookie. Grier said Georgia took advantage of Tindall’s 4.47 speed in the 40-yard dash, using him as a pass-rusher, quarterback spy and in coverage.

Miami blitzed on 38% of its opponents’ dropbacks last season, the second-highest rate in the NFL. That type of aggression is why Tindall feels his skill set perfectly suits his new team.

“The way they use their linebackers is different,” he said. “They use their linebackers everywhere. They put them on the edge sometimes, they put them on the line, they put them at Mike, Will. They are very versatile and I feel like I fit into it.”

As enticing as his skill set is, Tindall’s shortest path to early playing time will come on special teams, where Grier said he expects him to contribute. He will compete with Elandon Roberts, Duke Riley and Brennan Scarlett for defensive reps at inside linebacker, but his ability to cover sideline to sideline sets him apart. He is likely to be worked into the Dolphins’ rotation as soon as he grasps the scheme.

Miami also added an outside linebacker in the seventh round, Cameron Goode, who has an uphill battle to crack the initial 53-man roster but could sneak into the team’s pass-rush rotation with a strong summer camp.

With only four picks to work with and an unwillingness to part with any of its five picks in the first three rounds of next year’s draft, the Dolphins had to take what they could get, whichever way the board fell.

They left their facility Saturday thrilled with the way it did.

“You want to feel good about the players that you add,” coach Mike McDaniel said. “The bottom line is that we need some Miami Dolphins that our locker room can embrace and that can make the players that we have better and make the team better.

“That’s what we did and we feel great about that.”

Geno Smith vs. Drew Lock (vs. TBD?): Where Seahawks go from here at QB – NFL Nation

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks‘ first quarterback competition since 2012 began in earnest Monday, when they were allowed to begin holding on-field drills as part of their voluntary offseason workout program. Things will start to get more real when OTAs begin on May 23.

In a battle that doesn’t have nearly the intrigue as when then-rookie Russell Wilson beat out Matt Flynn and Tarvaris Jackson a decade ago, it’s Drew Lock vs. Geno Smith vying to take over Wilson’s starting spot. And while the Seahawks could still acquire someone else to make that a three-man race — Baker Mayfield the most obvious candidate — developmental prospects Jacob Eason and undrafted free agent Levi Lewis are the only other quarterbacks on their depth chart for now.

So much for the widely held belief that they needed to take a QB1 in this year’s draft.

Malik Willis was a popular mock pick for Seattle at No. 9 overall. The Seahawks passed on Willis four times before he was taken 86th overall — feeling he was nowhere near NFL-ready, according to one source — and didn’t think enough of the other quarterbacks to take one with any of their nine selections.

“It’s hard for rookies,” general manager John Schneider said after the draft, explaining the decision to not take a quarterback and hinting at how lousy this year’s QB class was. “It’s very hard on rookies to come in here and [compete right away]. You have to have unique, unique qualities … Continuously throughout the draft, it just didn’t fall the right way for one reason or another.”

In many ways, the Seahawks declining to take a quarterback this year was a repeat of 2011.

Back then, they let long-time starter Matt Hasselbeck walk in free agency before signing Jackson to a modest short-term deal that made it clear they viewed him as a bridge option. They had long-term uncertainty at quarterback and not many attractive options in what was considered — and proved to be — a weak draft at the position.

The Seahawks had interest in Andy Dalton but passed on him late in the first round, with not everyone in their football operations in agreement that he was the answer. It turned out to be the right decision not because of who they took — tackle James Carpenter — but because not forcing the Dalton pick paved the way for Seattle to draft Wilson a year later.

While the Seahawks didn’t consider taking Willis or any other quarterback at No. 9 like they considered Dalton at No. 25 in 2011, there was a coincidental parallel in taking a tackle instead.

And the Seahawks were fortunate that Charles Cross fell to them.

With the top two pass-rushers (Travon Walker and Aidan Hutchinson), the top two corners (Derek Stingley Jr. and Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner) and two of the top three tackles (Ikem Ekwonu and Evan Neal) taken among the first eight picks, Cross was the only player left the Seahawks wanted to draft at No. 9, according to a source. They needed pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux (whom they didn’t like) and receiver Drake London (whom they didn’t need) to come off the board in order for Cross — their second-rated tackle behind Ekwonu — to still be there.

While the Seahawks were on the clock, the Jets wanted to flip picks and move up one spot, worried that another team wanted to move up in Seattle’s spot for the receiver New York wanted, Garrett Wilson. The Seahawks then would have taken Cross at 10, but with no deal, they stayed put and took him at 9.

“We’re just really excited that we have a pillar at left tackle,” Schneider said.

But they still have a long-term quarterback question.

The Seahawks believe some of Luck’s struggles over his first three seasons with the Denver Broncos were the result of tough-luck circumstances, including a coordinator change and a COVID-truncated offseason after he finished his rookie year strong. They think he’s got enough untapped potential to warrant a one-year look, provided he can beat out Smith.

They like Smith’s command of their system and believe they uncovered the offensive formula that best suits him when he led the Seahawks to a blowout win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in his third and final fill-in start for Wilson last season.

But both Smith (13-21) and Lock (8-13) have career records well below .500, so there’s more hope than certainty that either of them can stick.

“Geno Smith is the guy that did the most playing for us and has the most background, so Drew is in the catch-up mode right now,” coach Pete Carroll told NFL Network during the draft. “We’ll get on the field for the first time Monday and get a chance to see what he looks like, and we can really get a feel. I love the potential. We loved the guy coming out. I’m liking him in our culture and the way we’re going to approach things. We’re going to support this kid and give him every opportunity to find the best he has to offer. I think he’s really going to take to it and we’ll see how far it goes. He’s got some real weapons around him.

” … So whoever wins this thing in the competition is going to have a good surrounding supporting cast, and Drew will try to take advantage of that.”

As for the Mayfield possibility, the former Cleveland Browns starter and 2018 No. 1 overall pick guessed on the “Ya Never Know” podcast last month that Seattle would “probably” be his most likely landing spot. But there has been no firm indication that the Seahawks have anything more than tepid interest in Mayfield. It would likely take the Browns eating much — if not most — of his guaranteed $19 million salary for 2022.

Lock is making less than $1.5 million on the final year of his rookie contract. Smith’s one-year deal has a base value of $3.5 million and incentives worth another $3.5 million, but there’s only $500,000 guaranteed. That gives the Seahawks flexibility to add someone else at the right price and/or move on from Smith if he doesn’t emerge as their starter.

With the Browns in a holding pattern, the Seahawks might have time to evaluate their current options then revisit the Mayfield possibility after the offseason program if needed.

“We’re really happy with the guys we’ve got, to see them battle, and we’ll see what happens,” Carroll told NFL Network. “You never know what’s going on down the road. We’re always looking.”

Mo Salah sends Champions League message following Manchester City’s shock exit

Liverpool forward Mo Salah has taken to social media to send a short message to Champions League finalists Real Madrid after Los Blancos produced yet another astonishing comeback on their road to the final in Paris.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side had already produced incredible turnarounds against Paris Saint Germain and Chelsea in the previous two rounds to squeeze through, but looked as if they had run out of road against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City when Riyad Mahrez handed the Cityzens a 1 goal lead on the night, and a two-goal lead on aggregate.

That all changed in stoppage time, however, as super-sub Rodrygo popped up with two goals, Real Madrid’s first and second shots on target of the game, to send the fans into jubilation and the tie in extra time.

Then, in the first half of the added 30 minutes, Karim Benzema won his side a penalty, before dusting himself down and slotting home what turned out to be the winner and complete a remarkable comeback in the Santiago Bernabeu.

Salah sends Madrid message

And, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has got his wish, having revealed that he wanted to play Real Madrid and not Manchester City in the final in Paris, got his wish.

The Egyptian, taking to social media, clearly wants revenge for 2018, where he was taken off with a dislocated shoulder in Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid. He tweeted a simple message. ‘We have a score to settle’.

And, with arguably the most in-form team in Europe up against the record winners who defy logic time and time again, it is set up to be a mouthwatering contest.

Nets Announce Ben Simmons Will Undergo Back Surgery

The Brooklyn Nets announced that Ben Simmons would undergo back surgery on Tuesday.

According to Nick Friedell of ESPN, the surgery is a “microdiscectomy procedure” that will “alleviate pain caused by the herniated disc” in his back. Simmons will reportedly take 3-4 months to recover fully, per NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Simmons’ back injury was first reported shortly after the 76ers traded him to the Nets for James Harden at the trade deadline. Simmons sat out the entire 2021-22 season and playoffs due to a season-long battle with mental health and the aforementioned lower back injury that prevented him from a possible Game 4 return in the Nets’ first-round series against the Celtics.

JJ Reddick Defends Draymond Green: ‘He is Real, Authentic, and Unfiltered’

Tensions were high when Draymond Green had to leave Game 2 of the Warriors-Grizzlies Western Conference semifinal to get stitches after getting elbowed in the eye by Xavier Tillman while both were going after a loose ball. As he walked off the floor and into the locker room, Green flipped off the Memphis fans who were booing him.

Afterward, Green minced no words about how he felt about Grizzlies fans, defiantly letting the media know that he would take the fine for detrimental conduct and make up the lost money through an appearance.

“If you’re going to boo somebody who’s getting hit in the eye, (his) face running down blood, you should get flipped off,” Green said. ” So, I’ll take the fine. I’ll go do an appearance and make up the money. But it felt really good to flip them off. I could’ve had a concussion or anything. So if they’re gonna be that nasty, I can be nasty too. I’m assuming the cheers was because they knew I’d get fined.”

“Great, I make $25 million a year; I should be just fine.”

On Wednesday, JJ Redick, who joined ESPN last year as an analyst after a 15-year playing career, defended Green to Chris “Mad Dog” Russo, who wasn’t the biggest fan of the Warriors’ big man choice to flip off the Memphis faithful in attendance who cheered as Green left to get stitches for his bloody eye.

“I want to take a little umbrage with this ‘shut up and play’ because that has the same sort of connotations that the ‘shut up and dribble’ crowd has towards athletes, and I have a real problem with that,” Redick sounded off. “Specifically with Draymond—the idea that America is tired of him. You do realize the guy has a very popular podcast where he hosts, and he talks, himself, for the majority of the episode, and people listen to that.”

Reddick continued: “He signed a talent deal with Turner [Sports] because people want to hear what Draymond has to say. The reason they want to hear what Draymond has to say is because—just like in this press conference—he is real, authentic, and unfiltered. You can’t take away what makes a player great, so there’s no shut up and play.’”

Russo, meanwhile, insisted that this was “not a political scenario or race situation,” adding that he was just noting that Green is a “polarizing” figure and he is merely speaking for the millions of longtime basketball fans who agree with him about the multi-time NBA champ.

“I’m not saying it’s a race situation. I’m saying the fans you’re talking about, they talk about athletes that way like you just talked about an athlete,” Redick fired back. “The people on Fox News talk about athletes that way; that’s my issue.”

The former Duke star concluded: “I don’t actually care about the fans that watched Bob Cousy play or watched Wilt [Chamberlain] play. I don’t care! I appreciate they’ve been NBA fans that long, but I don’t appreciate the undertone.”

Arsene Wenger defends Unai Emery; “They didn’t give him alot of time”

Legendary former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has come to the defense of Unai Emery after the Spanish manager has led current outfit Villarreal to another excellent showing in Europe this season.

Emery, while at the helm of the La Liga outfit this season, guided the Spanish side to the semi-finals of the Champions League when they stood toe-to-toe with finalists Liverpool after fighting to a 5-2 aggregate loss against what is unquestionably one of the top sides on the continent in Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

His success upon his return to Spain was felt last season as well when Villarreal secured their first-ever major honor when they won the Europa League last season, ironically, besting Arsenal along the way when the two clashed in the semi-finals.

Thus far, Emery has shown that he still is a top-level manager, and according to Wenger himself, was treated unfairly during his spell in north London after he was removed from duty before being replaced by Mikel Arteta.

When asked about the club’s decision to remove him during his punditry commitments for beIN Sports during yesterday’s Champions League fixture, Wenger responded “Certainly yes because they didn’t give him a lot of time. I think Unai Emery is a good coach anhttps://www.101greatgoals.com/features/unai-emery-cements-legacy-with-shock-villarreal-win-over-bayern-munich/d showed in Spain, he’s consistently there at the top level.”

Though the Spanish club did not on to do the unthinkable in the top club competition in Europe, Emery continued to build on his legacy in top-level management after Villarreal saw their way past a pre-tournament in Bayern Munich with a massive name on the list of club’s he has beaten across his career.

All told, Emery has banked four Europa League wins in his managerial career while also securing seven major honors at the helm of Paris Saint-Germain in just two seasons in the French capital. Though things are going well at Arsenal under Arteta as the Gunners are in pole position for a return to the Champions League, some may still wonder what could have been with Arsenal if the club remained in Emery’s corner just a little longer.

P.J. Tucker On Being a Defensive Ace: ‘It’s Not a Desirable Job’

Miami Heat defensive stopper PJ Tucker recently spoke to Andscape about his calling card in the League: tough-nosed gritty defense, night after night.

“It’s not a desirable job, man. Nobody wants to guard anybody. But from a competitive standpoint, I love the way I came into league, and I made myself in the league being that. It’s like, ‘Nobody wants to guard him. I got him,” Tucker said.

Tucker showcased his elite defense against the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. While guarding James Harden, Tucker allowed him to score just five points all game, with the rest of Harden’s points coming from the line or against another Miami defender.

While Harden shot 66.7 percent against Tucker, he got only three shots up on him in four minutes and 42 seconds of action; the largest timeframe spent guarding the Beard by far in Game 1.

Tucker elaborated on the behind-the-scenes necessities it takes to be an effective defender:

“I got to study film. I got to study tendencies. I got to study everything. I got to know everybody on the floor. You got to talk. You got to be vocal. You got to be physical. You got to understand the game. You got to understand how games are being read.”

However, he believes defense takes more than just understanding the game and what your opponent wants to do. Using Draymond Green as an example, Tucker gave another golden requirement of being an elite defender:

“He’s [Draymond Green] one of the most competitive people in the League, but he does his job just as good if not better than anybody in the highest level, championship level. And that’s what it’s about for me. Being a defender’s being the most competitive person out there.”

Tucker and the Heat play Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the 76ers tonight at the FTX Arena.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Moving On From Game 2: ‘Not Gonna Complain’

Despite a monster second-half effort, the Milwaukee Bucks fell short of stealing home court from the Boston Celtics after a blowout 109-89 loss in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

The man behind the attempted comeback bid, Giannis Antetokounmpo, finished the game with 28 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. However, he shot 11-27 from the floor and 1-4 from beyond the arc.

Antetokounmpo was 2-12 from the field in the first half before taking over the third quarter with 18 points. The Greek Freak told assembled media that he just had to keep making plays even if he wasn’t at his absolute best.

“Just gotta keep making plays; this is what basketball is about; you’re gonna make shots, and you’re gonna miss shots, but at the end of the day, you play to make right plays and finding your teammates.”

He followed up by saying that he’s moving on from the Bucks’ tough Game 2 loss and is focusing on Game Three on Saturday.

“At the end of the day, I’m not gonna sit down and complain that I’m frustrated,” Antetokounmpo said. “I just keep achieving and finding more winning solutions for myself and my teammates. We did our job, and they did there’s, so now we gotta go back home and do our job again.”

The Bucks look to take back the series lead Saturday as they host the Celtics back home in Fiserv Forum.

Ones to Watch | Number 9: Pablo Torre; another young revolutionary

In a football world filled with countless stars of today, so many of us are curious about who is waiting in the wings. That search for that next wonderkid; a youngster that has the potential to make us stand up and marvel at how they are masters of their craft despite their tender age, is always on the minds of millions of fans around the world.

With this in mind, we at 101 Great Goals will be bringing you another weekly series taking a look at players across the world that are 21-years-old or younger. Some of them you will have no doubt heard of, while we hope to bring you a few new names to spark your curiosities every now and then.

Name: Pablo Torre

Age: 19-years-old

Position: Attacking Midfield

Place of Birth: Soto de la Marina, Spain

Citizenship: Spain

National team caps: 0 (capped at U19 level)

Current club: Real Racing Club de Santander

Current Market Value (per Transfermarkt): €3-million

Potential suitor(s): Barcelona

Barcelona is amidst a period of transformation that countless are supporting in full voice if you are in Catalunya or any Blaugranes enclave around the globe that has seen the La Liga giants reversal in 2021-22 under legendary midfield maestro Xavi in the wake of Ronald Koeman’s departure.

Barça struggled mightily under the iconic former Dutch international and sat ninth in the table, causing the club to correctly pull the trigger on calling time on their relationship with Koeman. In a bid to get back to their roots, Barcelona gambled on Xavi in a big way after the son of La Masia had only cut his managerial teeth in Qatar with Al Sadd but doing so in an impressive fashion.

It was clear that Barça had a long-term approach to once more build around the swath of talented youth in and around the first-team squad with members such as Gavi, Pedri, Ansu Fati, Riqui Puig, Nico González, and Eric García. The additional winter singing of Ferran Torres only magnified the club’s plan – with Xavi’s approval – to return to youth and look toward the future. But with the club now on course to finish runner-up to rivals Barcelona when just six months ago there were fears they could miss out on Europe altogether, plans for the future continue alongside signings that hopefully will come in to bolster the first-team immediately; one of those signings of the future is 19-year-old Real Racing Club de Santander starlet Pablo Torre.

A product of Racing’s academy set-up, Torre has already endeared himself to Los Verdiblancos faithful after being the leading light for the Cantabrian outfit this season as they earned promotion back into the Segunda División (LaLiga SmartBank) next season, scoring 10-goals and adding a further 9-assists in the league which helped Racing top the table.

Blessed with a fantastic ability to influence proceedings from set-pieces (which could immediately come in handy at Barcelona next season), technical craft befitting Barça status, creativity required to make an impact at the Camp Nou, and the ability to switch from possession to a direct approach makes him the perfect young canvas for Xavi and the staff at Barcelona to mold into another top young player to build a future around.

That same desire to acquire talented youngsters from outside the Barça sphere helped the club land fellow 19-year old Pedri from UD Las Palmas in the summer of 2020, with the rise of the full Spanish international being one of the talking points of Euro 2020 last summer when he shone under Luis Enrique.

The directive at the club is clear when it comes to propping up a youth movement under Xavi, but what still remains unclear is whether or not Torre will have a direct role to play for Barcelona next season.

At the time of writing, Spanish outlet Sport has tabled three possible avenues for Torre in what will be his first season on the books at Barcelona after the club previously agreed to terms to bring him to Catalonia this coming summer; promote him into the first-team setup, blood him at Barça B, or loan him back to Racing where he can continue receiving heavy first-team minutes at a club and in a system he fully understands.

It is a tricky decision that Xavi and his staff will have to make, and at the very least, reports suggesting that he is prepared to survey the youngster during their pre-season program at the very least should provide him a benchmark to assess what he feels the Spanish youth international needs.

The next few seasons could potentially make or break Pablo Torre, as it so often does for many gifted young players whose pathway to prominence is either aided or hindered by decisions that so often are not theirs to make.

But if his career to date is anything to go by, the influence he has shown in Cantabria will undoubtedly translate to Catalonia as long as Barcelona is allowed to do what they have historically done best.

Chicago Bears fans will love why Robert Griffin III wants to return to NFL

If Robert Griffin III returns to the NFL, he wants to do so with the Chicago Bears where he can help leave a legacy behind with Justin Fields.

Football isn’t just pigskin and touchdown dances, it’s a narrative that anyone who plays the game wants to actively be involved in.

It’s why players find it so hard to walk away from the game, why rookies dream of making their debut, and why the concept of legacy is so critically important to how we remember those who played the game and how important they were to the story of the NFL.

Within the broader story of the game, each team has its own shelf packed full of stories that have left an impression on fans over the years. Robert Griffin III feels as though his story is still being written and wants to place it on the shelf of the Chicago Bears.

Speaking this week about a potential return to the NFL, which in itself is pretty significant, RGIII noted he already knows where he’d want to make his football resurrection.

“Going to Chicago with Justin FIelds to try to help as much as I possibly can in that quarterback room would be a great situation,” Griffin III said on The Rich Eisen Show.

Whether or not the Bears have any actual interest in Fields is another story.

However, the fact that Justin Fields is drawing RGIII out of retirement — at least in thought — should make Bears fans very happy.

It’s no secret that the NFL is a quarterback-driven league, and it’s a position the Bears have historically never been able to find the guy at. The Bears are a team that recalls grainy memories of Sid Luckman when asked about the best quarterback in franchise history, which tells you all you need to know about the pain over the years and the hope that Fields presents.

If RGIII wants to come out of retirement to mentor Fields, that’s a sure sign that other players around football likely have similar sentiments. The Bears haven’t been a traditional football destination for years, and now they have something more appealing than the city of Chicago to sell folks on.

RGIII saying he wants to return to the NFL to play with Justin Fields isn’t a franchise-altering moment, but it’s a sign that the tide could be turning for a team that desperately needs to reintroduce itself at the Adult table.
