Two Barcelona players offered to Chelsea during latest Alonso/Azpilicueta talks

Revealed: The 2 Barcelona players offered to Chelsea owner during latest Alonso/Azpilicueta talks

Word stemming from the media late on Thursday points towards a potentially complex exchange deal being on the cards between Chelsea and Barcelona.

This comes with the latter remaining keen on a pair of Blues defenders.

Amid the club’s ongoing efforts to reinforce Xavi Hernandez’s backline ahead of next season, the transfer team at the Camp Nou have set their sights firmly on the additions of both Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.

Reports in Spain earlier today even went as far as to suggest that a deal to bring the former to Catalunya was on the verge of completion.

In turn, it didn’t come as a massive surprise, late this evening, to hear of new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly being spotted in Barcelona, ahead of a meeting with Joan Laporta and co.

And now, as alluded to above, an insight into the details of the discussion between the two clubs has been provided.

The info comes courtesy of the Daily Mail, who reiterate that negotiations centered around the potential arrivals of Spanish international pair Alonso and Azpilicueta at the Camp Nou.

In a bid to drive the fee involved in any such operation down, Barcelona are understood to have offered up two players of their own.

The stars in question? Sergino Dest and Memphis Depay.

The name of Frenkie de Jong is also said to have come to the fore, albeit with it having been made clear that the Dutchman would rather link back up with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, than take his talents to Stamford Bridge.

Should Barca ultimately go on to strike deals for both Alonso and Azpilicueta, it would of course mean that no fewer than three Chelsea defenders have opted to link up with Xavi’s squad this summer, after the free agent arrival of Andreas Christensen was made official earlier today.

Darvin Ham On Russell Westbrook’s Role Next Season: ‘I Got a Wholehearted Plan’

As a first-time head coach of an NBA franchise, Darvin Ham has been tasked with taking over a proud franchise in the Los Angeles Lakers and transforming it back into the title contender they have traditionally been.

One major factor in helping the Lakers undergo a massive turnaround next season will be what Ham intends to do with Russell Westbrook at point guard. The triple-double king is coming off an up and down season where he absorbed a lot of blame for the Lakers’ regular-season struggles and their tumble down the Western Conference standings.

Westbrook averaged 18.5 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game on 44.4 percent shooting from the field and a 29.8 percent shooting from three-point range.

Heading into this next season, Ham said he plans to deploy Westbrook as the starting point guard of the Lakers. Ham also told Marc J. Spears of Andscape a little bit about his plans to use Westbrook, remaining mum on specific details but said that criticism of Westrbook and counting him out at 33-years-old would be “premature”.

“Counted out prematurely. Counted out. Prematurely.” Ham said about the disapproval the 2017 MVP received last year. “I’ve had some great interactions with Russ, in person, over dinner, over the phone, over text messages. I love Russell Westbrook, man. Just his mentality, his approach. Just to see him, a guy of that magnitude and everything he’s done in the league to get hated on.”

But being me, I got a wholehearted plan, a clear plan on how I’m going to use him. I showed it to him, sat down, brought stuff up for him. I think he’s going to flourish. We ain’t going to try to curtail his energy. We’re just going to diversify it, redirect it.

Ham also spoke about his thoughts about LeBron James and Anthony Davis, calling James “one of one” and a “rare commodity.” When AD came up, Ham called the 29-year-old forward the “biggest factor” and said he’s looking forward to The Brow “having a huge year this year.”

When it comes to championship expectations for next year, Ham says that he plans on building “winning habits” daily and will be “preaching daily preparation” to the Lakers daily. He also said that he will also be making sure to achieve a balance during the tough days of the regualr season. If they go on a three-game losing streak, Ham will take the team out and them “check out the African American museum” instead of conducting a “kick-ass practice”.

The details of the plans could all sound pretty good to the Lakers roster and their fans. Ham will have a different cache with the Lakers roster as a former player. As a first-time head coach of an older roster headline by James, Davis, and Westbrook, putting the ideas into reality will be a different story.

Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, Vice president Rob Pelinka, and James will have to put their faith in Ham to be the solution they need to regain relevancy.

Chelsea in ‘advanced negotiations’ to land 2nd Man City star

Chelsea are closing on the signing of a 2nd member of the squad of Premier League rivals Manchester City, according to reports.

The Blues, of course, have long been pushing for the signature of a high-profile member of the attacking setup at the Etihad, in the form of Raheem Sterling.

In fact, as per a growing number of reports over the course of the last 24 hours, the transfer team at Stamford Bridge are on the verge of closing a deal for the prolific England international.

And, as per The Times, late on Thursday evening, Chelsea are too inching towards landing a 2nd member of Pep Guardiola’s ranks.

The player in question? Nathan Ake.

Negotiations between the two clubs are said to be ‘advanced’, after a breakthrough was reached earlier this week.

The Dutch international, in turn, looks primed to imminently link back up with his former employers in west London, reinforcing a depleted defensive core still recovering from the departures of both Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

Whilst one defensive target inches ever closer to a Chelsea switch, another, on the other hand, looks set to head elsewhere.

As per a whole host of reports across the media late on Thursday night, Juventus standout Matthijs de Ligt, long tipped to make his way to Stamford Bridge, is now instead close to taking his talents to Germany, with Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Cowboys blew golden opportunity to bring Von Miller home

Star linebacker Von Miller was ready to take less to play for the Cowboy in Dallas but their offer was paltry compared to the Bills.

In an alternate universe, Von Miller is in Dallas getting ready to play for the Cowboys this year.

In this universe, he’s a member of the Buffalo Bills and gearing up to help Josh Allen and company get over the hump on their quest for a Super Bowl.

It’s crazy to think of how perfect a fit Miller would have been for the Cowboys…and how they completely whiffed on their chance to bring him in.

Cowboys blew a golden opportunity to bring Von Miller home

Dan Pomei’s recent feature on Miller’s road to Buffalo for The Athletic reveals what an advantage Dallas had if they had wanted to seriously pursue the pass rusher.

Miller is from DeSoto, Texas. The regional draw to come home is obvious, but Miller had even more incentive to pick Dallas. His one-year-old son Valor and the child’s mother are “moving to the Dallas area.”

The linebacker admitted he would have given the Cowboys a discount.

“I told them I was ready to come to the Cowboys,” Miller said in The Athletic. “I would have taken less to go to Dallas because it’s Dallas. But I wouldn’t take that much less.”

“That much less” amounts to $50 million.

The Bills offered Miller a six-year deal worth $120 million with three years guaranteed. The Rams were offering a three-year deal worth more than $20 million per year with two years guaranteed.

What did the Cowboys put on the table? The five-year, $70 million deal that Randy Gregory turned down, with two years guaranteed.

Signing with Dallas on that deal wouldn’t have been a discount. It would have been a ripoff.

The Cowboys had their chance. They didn’t take it seriously.

REPORT: Utah’s Donovan Mitchell to ‘Stand Pat’ On Trade Rumors

The Utah Jazz’s offseason has been anything but quiet this summer.

The dispatch of Rudy Gobert to Minnesota has led to speculation around the future of All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell, according to Tim Daniels of Bleacher Report.

However, Utah has come out expressing its unwillingness to trade Mitchell following the Gobert deal. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has also confirmed that Mitchell will not force anything.

“On Mitchell’s side, he’s going to stand pat,” Windhorst said. “He’s not going to force any action right now.”

Since 2016-17, the Utah Jazz has not been able to progress in the playoffs past the second round. They have already hired a new coach in Will Hardy and sent Gobert away in a pivotal deal bringing back four first-rounders (three that have no protections at all) and four new players.

The team wants to hold onto Mitchell and retool around the multi-time All-Star.

Sabrina Ionescu Records First 30-Point Triple-Double in WNBA History

Sabrina Ionescu recorded the best stat line of her career when she dropped a 31-point, 13-rebound, 10-assist triple-double in Wednesday’s 116-107 win against the Las Vegas Aces. Ionescu’s performance tied her with Candace Parker for the most triple-doubles in a WNBA career after becoming the first WNBA history player to record a 30-point triple-double.

At just 24-years-old, Ionescu has already recorded three career triple-doubles. She also joins Parker as the only player to have multiple triple-doubles in the same season.

The Liberty snapped a two-game losing streak thanks to Ionescu’s brilliance, and the team’s 116 points are the most in franchise history. The wild back-and-forth contest saw the Liberty and Aces score a W-record 223 combined points. New York and Las Vegas combined to make a League-record 31 three-pointers, with the Liberty hitting 18 shots from beyond the arc.

Ionescu also made history as she became the first player in WNBA history to record a triple-double without committing a single turnover.

“I was just really trying to take care of the ball, I thought that was really important,” Ionescu said after the game, per ESPN’s Mechelle Voepel. “As a point guard and the primary ball-handler, just wanting to continue to work on that part of the game.

She also shot a career-high 7-of-8 from three and an efficient 10-of-13 from the field.

“I’m just trying to be the best that I can every time I step out on the floor. It’s me versus me. I’m trying to get better and continue to learn from all the situations that I’ve been put in.”

After a 1-7 start to the season, New York is now 9-12 and within a half a game of the playoffs. The Liberty has a Thursday night road game against the Phoenix Mercury to end the first half of the season.

Ionescu will represent New York on Sunday as an All-Star starter for Team Wilson, led by Aces star A’ja Wilson.

Arsenal handed Fabio Vieira boost ahead of Nurnberg friendly

Premier League giants Arsenal have been afforded a boost on the personnel front, amid the club’s ongoing preparations for the new season.

This comes with summer addition Fabio Vieira, it would seem, inching towards a return to full fitness.

Portuguese youth international Vieira, of course, opted to take his talents to the red half of north London late last month.

In something of a bolt from the blue, the powers that be at Arsenal swooped to tie up a deal for the now-former Porto standout, who is expected to play a key role in Mikel Arteta’s squad from next season on.

In turn, upon word coming to the fore last week that Vieira – who is yet to even take part in his first training session with his new club – had been spotted wearing protective footwear, concern inevitably began to spread across Arsenal’s fanbase.

This came with it later revealed that the midfielder was dealing with a minor foot issue.

As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the Arsenal camp on Thursday is anything to go by, then Vieira is seemingly closing on a return to full fitness.

As showcased in the image below, the 22-year-old was today spotted linking up with the rest of Mikel Arteta’s squad in Germany.

This comes with the Gunners primed to return to action on Friday, in a friendly meeting with Nurnberg.

Even more significant, though, is the fact that Vieira did not appear to be sporting any form of protective footwear on his previously injured left foot.

Brittney Griner Pleads Guilty to Drug Possession and Smuggling

Brittney Griner pleaded guilty to drug possession and smuggling during the second day of her trial, but Griner told the judge that she had done so unintentionally, according to Reuters.

“I’d like to plead guilty, your honor. But there was no intent. I didn’t want to break the law,” Griner said, according to Reuters.

“I’d like to give my testimony later. I need time to prepare,”

This was Griner’s second court appearance since her trial began last Friday. Griner has been detained in Russia since February after authorities allegedly found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport. If convicted, Griner could face up to ten years in prison for large-scale transportation of drugs.

The White House said President Joe Biden called Griner’s wife on Wednesday to assure her he’s doing all he can to get BG released. Biden and Griner’s wife spoke after Biden read a handwritten letter from Griner. The eight-time All-Star wrote that she fears she won’t return home.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov warned Thursday that “attempts by the American side to make noise in the public — don’t help the practical settlement of issues.”

Griner pleading guilty is not expected to end her trial; the judge will continue to read the entire case into the record, which can go on for a few weeks or even months. Reports say the guilty plea was a strategy to help facilitate a prisoner swap that could bring BG home.

Griner’s lawyer told reporters they hope for the most lenient sentencing possible.

The next court hearing is scheduled for July 14.

Aaron Rodgers says all the right things about Packers rookie wideouts for now

Aaron Rodgers and the defending NFC North champions have a lot of new faces on the team. And the Green Bay Packers’ receiving corps is laced with youth.

All-Pro Davante Adams was dealt to the Las Vegas Raiders. Marquez Valdes-Scantling signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Equanimeous St. Brown is now a member of the Chicago Bears.

What’s a four-time NFL MVP to do?

Seriously, the Green Bay Packers will have quite the blend of experience and youth when it comes to their wide receiving corps this season. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had plenty of thought on the changes this week during another appearance on the Pat McAfee Show (via NFL.com’s Coral Smith). And he put it all in very proper perspective.

“Every year there’s opinions that start coming out about players in helmets and shorts, and I would say let’s everybody just take a nice deep long breath and trust the training camp time that we have, trust the coaching staff, trust the relationships that will continue to be formed, trust the guys in the room like Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb, and Sammy Watkins to help these young guys out.”

In April’s draft, general manager Brian Gutekunst used three of the club’s 11 picks on the wideout position. The Packers dealt up in the second round to snare North Dakota State’s Christian Watson. The team added Nevada’s Romeo Doubs in the fourth round. And with their last of their four selections, Gutekunst picked Nebraska’s Samori Toure. And Rodgers likes their potential.

“Physically, they definitely look the part, all three of them. All three of the guys we drafted, they all have physical gifts. Obviously the top two picks are bigger, Doubs and Watson, but the seventh-round pick’s got a lot of stuff to him. So I think it’s going to be great.”

And as far as the transition from college to the pros, Rodgers had some thoughts on that as well. “There’s no better teacher for them on what NFL ball’s going to be like than going against our top three corners, Jaire (Alexander), Eric Stokes and obviously Rasul (Douglas). So those guys will get a real quick initiation into the NFL.”

Once again, it figures to be an interesting year for a franchise that is still looking for its first Super Bowl appearance since 2010. But you get the sense that when it comes to who he’s throwing the football to in 2022, Aaron Rodgers doesn’t seem to be the least bit concerned at the moment.

Zion Williamson on Signing Extension: ‘Ultimate Goal Is to Win a Championship’

Zion Williamson celebrated his birthday in a unique and humbling fashion as he signed his max extension on Wednesday at the Dryades YMCA in New Orleans. The local Y is where the former Dukie and his stepfather have been running summer basketball camps.

At 22-years-old, Williamson will come into his fourth NBA season with a lot to prove after missing all of last season with a broken foot. Injuries have hampered the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft during his few years in the League. When healthy, Williamson has been an All-Star and one of the best young talents amongst the new generation attempting to take over as the old heads like LeBron James and Stephen Curry advance in age.

“I want to prove that I’m a winner. Simple as that. I want to win with coach. I want to win with my teammates. The ultimate goal is to win a championship,” he said per FoxNews. “I feel like that’s what we’re all striving for. Like [Pelicans GM David Griffin] said, we’re hungry. Y’all saw this past year what the team did. I’m just excited to add to that.”

After he signed his deal, Williamson said that he wanted to prove he was a “winner” and that he wanted to do it in New Orleans. He also thanked the Pelicans organization for betting and believing in him during a tumultuous season when many outside New Orleans questioned his durability and constantly raised the notion that Williamson wanted to leave for greener pasture.

“Thank y’all for really sticking with me the past year. It was a tough year, and then for the Pelicans to come give this birthday gift, I’m not going to let ’em down. I’m not going to let the city down, I’m not going to let my family down, and most of all, I’m not going to let myself down,” he said.

Above all, and as aforementioned, Williamson seems to be locked in with the Pelicans and has made it publicly clear that he wants to maximize his opportunities with the only franchise he’s ever known. The most important thing to take away is that Williamson will be with the Pelicans until 2028, when he’s 28-years-old.

“The last few months were a roller-coaster of emotions. The world just ran with narratives, and so when my family was going out in public, they’re getting harassed by people about why we don’t like New Orleans or why we don’t want to be here when that’s not the case at all,” he said.

“I wasn’t able to play because my foot was broke. Every time I checked my phone, it’s always something negative. Even when you’re trying to make positive of the situation, it was very tough.”

Through the 85 games Williamson has played, he has averaged 25.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. The last time he was healthy., Williamson averaged 27.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game on 61.1 percent shooting from the field during his first All-Star campaign.
