Milwaukee Bucks guard Grayson Allen underwent a successful minimal procedure in his left ring finger issues, team general manager Jon Horst revealed on Friday during a pre-draft media availability.

Added by Horst, the said complication has been bothering Allen throughout the 2021-2022 season and the surgery has no lasting effects.

“A lot of times, guys do maintenance-type stuff, routine stuff in the offseason to kind of get ready,” Horst said, via Associated Press. “It was good for him to kind of approach it in the offseason. It’ll be fine. There’s no kind of lasting effects.”

He is still expected to fully recover this offseason and be prepared for the Bucks’ training camp.

Arrived last year in a trade by the Memphis Grizzlies, Allen had a serviceable first season donning the Milwaukee jersey, averaging career-high in points (11.1), boards (3.7), and three-point shooting percentage (40.9%) per 27.3 minutes.

With the guidance of superstar Giannis Antetokonmpo, the Bucks are widely expected as one of the title favorites for the upcoming season. They fell short of their title defense against the Boston Celtics in the second-round matchup of the 2022 postseason.

Arsenal readying 2nd offer for Ajaz’s Lisandro Martinez

A fresh insight into Premier League outfit Arsenal’s ongoing pursuit of Ajax star Lisandro Martinez has been provided on Sunday.

The name of stopper Martinez has of course taken its place front and centre in the headlines on the red half of north London over the course of the week to date.

This comes after the transfer team at Arsenal, altogether out of the blue, were revealed to have tabled an opening offer for the Argentine’s services.

Ajax, for their part, opted to rebuff the proposal, understood to have come in around the €30 million mark.

If the latest word stemming from the media on Sunday is anything to go by, though, then it appears that Mikel Arteta and co. are far from ready to call time on their Martinez pursuit.

As per reliable Argentine journalist Roy Nemer, a follow-up bid is being readied by those in a position of power at Arsenal, keen to test the resolve of their Ajax counterparts.

Such an offer is expected to come in around the €35 million mark, inching ever closer to the alleged demands of the Eredivisie champions.

Arsenal’s keenness to get a deal for Martinez over the line as quickly as possible comes with the 24-year-old also understood to be on the wishlist of a number of rival Premier League clubs.

Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle are all too keeping a close eye on the situation, ahead of what could prove one of the transfer sagas of the summer.

Former linebacker weighs in on scarier QB to face Peyton Manning or Tom Brady

Former Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott revealed that it was harder to face Peyton Manning than Tom Brady.

This century, one of the greatest quarterback battles that NFL fans got to witness was between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Whether it was in the regular season or in the playoffs, it was must-watch television. There is always a debate as to who was the better quarterback, but who was the scariest to face if you were on the team lined up opposite to either quarterback?

During an episode of ESPN Radio show “Bart and Hahn,” former Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott said that he would much rather play Brady every week than face off against Manning.

Bart Scott reveals that it is much worse to face Peyton Manning than Tom Brady

“I’d much rather go against Tom Brady every day of the week than go against Peyton Manning,” Scott said, h/t Sports Illustrated. “I believe that’s how everybody feels. In the hay day, never ever have I said ‘We’re playing the Patriots. I’m so afraid of Tom Brady.’”

It is no secret that Manning was the master of calling an audible ahead of the snap. Scott put it perfectly about how the terms that Manning used would change in the game, and joking that to face off against him, “you feel like you have to take an SAT test.”

In his 11 year playing career, Scott faced off against Manning and Brady a total of four times total in the playoffs. As a member of the Ravens, Scott lost 15-6 to Manning’s Indianapolis Colts in 2003. Scott lost his second playoff meeting against Manning, where the Jets fell to the Colts 30-17 in the AFC Championship Game in 2009. But, Scott had the best luck the following year.

At the conclusion of the 2010 season, Scott’s Jets defeated Manning’s Colts 17-16 in the Wild Card Round and Brady’s Patriots 28-21 in the Divisional Round to reach the conference title game for the second-consecutive year. For those wondering, the Jets fell 24-19 to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger to miss out on a spot in Super Bowl 45.

When it comes to who would be the worst to play against, Scott let it be known that it is easily Manning over Brady.

Tottenham funds boost? The latest on Steven Bergwijn’s potential exit

An update on the ongoing speculation surrounding the name of Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn has been provided on Saturday.

Dutch international Bergwijn of course endured an altogether underwhelming campaign last time out.

Sitting behind all of Son Heung-min, Harry Kane, Lucas Moura and January arrival Dejan Kulusevski in the attacking pecking order in north London, he was afforded starts in just four of Spurs’ 38 Premier League fixtures under the combined watch of Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.

In possession of unquestionable talent, it has therefore come as little surprise to see the 24-year-old hotly tipped for a Spurs exit for some time now, with Dutch heavyweights Ajax one club frequently pushed as a potential landing spot in the media.

And, if the latest word doing the rounds on Saturday evening is anything to go by, then a move to Amsterdam over the coming weeks appears to be very much on the cards for Bergwijn.

This comes with a fresh insight into the attacker’s future beyond the summer having been provided by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Ajax, it is understood, are continuing to push hard for Bergwijn’s signature, with discussions between all three parties ongoing.

In turn, though a deal is yet to be struck, a transfer is ‘absolutely on’, albeit with those in a position of power at Tottenham only willing to sanction a sale in the case of their valuation being met.

Kurt Benkert shares classy response to surprise waiving by the Packers

Quarterback Kurt Benkert thanked the Green Bay Packers on Twitter after he was released by the team.

The Green Bay Packers brought back quarterback Aaron Rodgers on a lucrative three-year contract extension. Jordan Love is still on his rookie contract. But the team decided to part ways with Kurt Benkert on Friday, June 17, with reports indicating that they have released him from his contract.

Benkert took to Twitter to thank the team for “everything that came with being a Packer,” before saying that he is excited for what is to come next.

Kurt Benkert thanks Packers following his release

After spending the first three seasons of his career with the Atlanta Falcons, Benkert joined the Packers last season on a one-year contract, originally as a member of the practice squad. He was then activated to the 53-man roster late in the 2021 season after Love was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

In the team’s Week 14 game against the Chicago Bears, Benkert took the first snap of his NFL career, where he kneeled down twice in the victory formation. It was then revealed that Rodgers is the one that pushed head coach Matt LaFleur to bring Benkert into the game late.

With Benkert no longer with the team, that leaves Danny Etling as the only other quarterback on the roster not named Rodgers or Love. It will remain to be seen if they keep Etling once training camp concludes, or if they will just go with two quarterbacks entering their Week 1 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Fresh concerns surface surrounding fitness of Barcelona’s Ansu Fati

Word stemming from the Spanish media on Saturday suggests that Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati’s injury nightmare may not have come to a definitive end just yet.

This past season, of course, proved one to forget for youngster Ansu.

This came as the gifted attacker managed to string together a paltry three La Liga starts, owing to a host of injury issues, largely in his hamstrings.

Nevertheless, Ansu’s form when on the pitch remained hugely impressive, with the 19-year-old having racked up a none-too-shabby six goals across all competitions across the campaign’s length.

In turn, upon Ansu taking to the pitch in some capacity in each of Barca’s last five La Liga outings of the term, the widespread hope was that he was Spanish international was out of the woods when it comes to fitness, primed to explode back onto the world football scene in 2022/23.

It will therefore no doubt come as a major concern for the Blaugrana faithful to hear that, on Saturday, fresh fears have begun to spread regarding Ansu’s long-term prospects.

The info comes courtesy of Achraf Ben Ayad, generally regarded as on the money when it comes to ongoings at the Camp Nou.

And, unfortunately, it has been suggested that the teenage talent remains some way off competing at the highest level.

This comes with many at the Camp Nou understood to be of the opinion that Ansu made a mistake in turning down the opportunity to have his latest hamstring issue repaired via surgery.

It now remains to be seen whether the decision does indeed prove detrimental to the winger’s prospects moving forward.

Trey Lance draws more Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers comparisons

The NFL Network’s James Jones believes we will talk about Trey Lance like we do Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers in due time.

If Trey Lance does become the next Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers, then let’s give James Jones of the NFL Network some credit for sticking his neck out there by going out on that limb.

2022 should be Lance’s first season as the San Francisco 49ers‘ starting quarterback. The 49ers thought so highly of him that they gave up the farm to take him No. 3 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft out of North Dakota State, based strictly on one year of FCS collegiate production. Though the upside may very well be there, let’s just let him play ball and not compare him to NFL legends yet…

“I think he’s going to be in that category, years down the line, talking about him like we talk about Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers,” said Jones on the NFL Network studio set.

James Jones sees that Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers potential in Trey Lance

For the record, can we PLEASE stop comparing young quarterbacks to all-time greats and talents? Lance is going to be what Lance is going to be, for better or worse. But to compare him to the best quarterbacking talent since arguably Dan Marino and the four-time reigning NFL MVP is just pure lunacy at this point. Let’s see if Lance can seize control of the offense and win the NFC West first…

What is a tad troubling is not until recently has the narrative surrounding Lance being the guy changed. During Mahomes’ rookie season, everybody and their brother was speaking glowingly about Alex Smith’s backup. Rodgers would have been the Green Bay Packers starter sooner had Brett Favre not made a game of it by retiring and then unretiring, one training camp after another.

The best thing Lance can do is be a leader of men like his predecessor Jimmy Garoppolo was, but a way more talented version of him. Garoppolo certainly had his limitations as a fringe franchise quarterback, but his teammates loved him because he was one of the guys. Lance can become that, but he has the steepest learning curve of any first-round quarterback from his draft class.

Lance can totally become the guy, but these premature Mahomes and Rodgers comparisons have got to stop.

Was Patrick Mahomes secretly being petty in Tyreek Hill response?

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said all the right things in response to Tyreek Hill’s podcast comments, but some question his word choice.

In response to what Tyreek Hill said on his podcast about Tua Tagovailoa being the more “accurate” quarterback, Patrick Mahomes seemed to say all the right things.

Mahomes clarified that the Chiefs “still love” Hill, and Mahomes called him a “one-of-a-kind player.” Everything Mahomes said was positive, but small modifiers, like saying the Chiefs “still” love Hill, had some questioning about the true meaning behind Mahomes’ word choices.

NFL reporter Dov Kleiman asked why Mahomes used the word “still”, as if Hill had done something to no longer deserve that love from his longtime quarterback.

“Why wouldn’t you anymore?” Kleiman wrote. “He’s not allowed to speak his truth because you love him?”

Did Patrick Mahomes take sly shots back at Tyreek Hill?

Everything that Mahomes said to diffuse the Hill situation seemed to align with what a locker room leader would do: dismiss the drama and bring everything back to the team.

But to Kleiman’s point, Mahomes did make some interesting word choices, using particular themes and phrases to respond to Hill.

For example, Mahomes called Hill a “one-of-a-kind” player. While this is true, and it’s considerate for Mahomes to put Hill in his own category as a wide receiver, this is also grates against what Hill did in the first place: comparing Mahomes to Tagovailoa. While Hill has tried to explain that he didn’t intend to insult Mahomes and instead tried to stand up for his new quarterback, Mahomes makes it clear that he doesn’t want to insult Hill with a comparison — because Hill’s comparison was inherently insulting.

Then, Mahomes pivoted and began talking about how everyone on the team matters, including head coach Andy Reid.

“But as you know, in Coach Reid’s offsense, it takes the whole team. This offense was rolling before I got here, this offense was rolling when I was a young Cowboys fan watching the Eagles beat up on the Cowboys. It’s an offense that includes more than one player, and that includes myself.”

Considering that Hill left over a contract dispute and is now saying he didn’t feel valued in KC, reminding everyone that Chiefs dominance is a team effort isn’t only true — it might be a reminder to Hill that, “Hey, our success wasn’t all because of you or me, and we need to acknowledge that.” It’s a good quality in Mahomes that he wants to shower praise on his coach and teammates, but it may also be a subtle nudge to Hill that he shouldn’t prioritize himself over the team.

When asked about the last time he spoke with Hill, Mahomes said that it was at the Formula 1 race in Miami in May.

“Everything seemed fine,” Mahomes laughed.

Everything seemed fine when the two last spoke, but considering that Mahomes was “surprised” by Hill’s comments in the first place, this implies that…maybe everything isn’t fine, and Mahomes doesn’t really know how Hill thinks or feels about his time in KC at this point. The teammates who spent years with Hill sent him to Miami with praise and congratulations, but the podcast comments revealed that Hill was less than happy on his end. Mahomes thought that all was good, but laughing about how things seemed fine leaves room for the fact that perhaps they aren’t.

It’s been a difficult offseason for everyone in Kansas City, and aside from losing Hill’s talent on offense, Mahomes also lost a friend and teammate that he built a dynasty alongside at Arrowhead. It’s clearly been hard on everyone, and while Mahomes didn’t want to hurt Hill, it seems that to some extent, Hill’s comments did hurt him.

He was surprised, but he still loves Hill — even though there may be love lost on Hill’s end. Or, as Mahomes joked, maybe Hill did all this just to “get his podcast rolling.”

Houston Rockets Open Up About Fatherhood with CoolxDad

Stephen Silas grew up wanting to be like his father, longtime NBA coach and three-time champion Paul Silas. Their relationship, Silas says, was centered around the game, and looking back, his father’s influence has shaped the coach, and man, he is today.

“All of the things that he was great at seeped into me,” the Houston Rockets head coach told CoolxDad.

It’s powerful conversations like these that members of the Rockets, including Silas, Jae’Sean Tate and Josh Christopher recently had with Kevin Barnett, founder and CEO of non-profit organization CoolxDad, as a part of a meaningful “Father Day Special” campaign made in partnership with SLAM. Barnett, who is originally from Brooklyn, founded the organization in 2020 in hopes of amplifying and uplifting Black men and fathers in his community.

“We came up with this idea to really tie in the importance of what CoolxDad is and the community that we’re building and shedding light on Black fatherhood,” Barnett says over Zoom. “[When we sat down] with these players and the coach, [we saw] how their fathers believed in them, and how the] life lessons and direction and guidance has led them to be at the ultimate level.”

For Jae’Sean Tate, it was his father, Jermaine, who once sat him down and talked to him about being a man of the house. Tate, who admits that he had to grow up early at a young age remembers the moments where his father would go as far as to pull him off the basketball team whenever he got in trouble or let his grades slip up. “I didn’t finish a season until probably I was in seventh or eighth grade. Those were just some of the sacrifices he made for me, to teach me lessons,” Tate says.

Tate’s father, who played at Ohio State and Cincinnati before embarking on a pro career overseas, would push him workouts, too. They’d spend early mornings and late nights in the gym, and during those sessions, Jermaine had high expectations set: for every airball, Tate would have to do five pushups. “You miss a free throw, another five pushups added on,” he says.

Tate, who also played at Ohio State, has had to persevere through many personal hardships, including losing his mother at a young age. When he went undrafted in 2018, he played two seasons overseas in Belgium and Australia before signing with the Rockets in 2020. This past season, he averaged 11.8 points and 2.8 assists.

Barnett founded CoolxDad during the pandemic, as he watched innocent Black lives lost at the hands of police brutality. He was angry and frustrated.

“I had all mixed emotions you could think about, but a few emotions that really stood out was, I’m a Black man in America, and I’m also a father raising, now, two Black children in America. I was at a time where I was like, Man, I want to be a part of the change. But I have to do it in a way that is authentic to me, a way that I can feel that I’m not being forced or following. I was given a gift, and God gave me a gift of CoolxDad. He planted this idea of using the vehicle of fatherhood—something that I’m proud of [and] probably the best accomplishment I’ve ever accomplished in my life—as a way to bring authentic conversations to the forefront.”

When Josh Christopher was suiting up for Arizona State University, the Houston Rockets guard admits that, at one point, he was going through a tough time when his own father gave him the most valuable piece of advice. He’s continued to carry it with him, even today. “During that struggle, he was just telling me, the house is built for the storm not sunshine. That has stuck with me the most probably out of anything he’s ever told me. Another quote was, Adversity visits the strong and stays with the weak. That right there just tells me, you know, tough times obviously don’t last.”

For Barnett, he wanted to build CoolxDad into a community for men of color to feel a sense of belonging and encouraged them to be vulnerable and push past the stigmas associated with men of color that, in Barnett’s own words, “have combated us for our lives.”

“Stigma says that we’re deadbeat fathers. We’re not around, not supportive, or empathetic. But that’s not who we are. CoolxDad is a thriving community and provides [the] support necessary resources to bring back the holistic man so that he can see a better version of yourself.”

The non-profit first started with hosting a series of Zoom calls over the course of a month and half, where they opened up about everything from when is the right time to talk to your child about social injustice to opening up about their feelings about the current climate and death of George Floyd. The group initially included Barnett’s own close friends (“It was just the homies.”), but that quickly turned into 30, sometimes even 40 people hopping on the call.

“At that time, I didn’t know that I really wanted to start a non-profit right, I was just doing the mission.”

Now, CoolxDad has been established into a pinnacle of the Houston community that provides everything from their holiday gift drive initiative, Color Box, which is going on its third year. They’ve also donated toys and gifts to the Boys and Girls Club and the Big Brothers Big Sisters Foundation, as well as a partnership with the Contemporary Arts Museum, where they host a gift wrapping event with all the fathers in the community. The organization also offers financial and business literacy support, as well as mental health, wellness and mentorship opportunities.

“Nonprofit has a stigma [associated with it], especially in communities of color. [It’s like], here comes another nonprofit telling me what was wrong with me. Are they going to be here for six months or two months, and they’re out? We didn’t want that. What we wanted was to amplify Black culture [and] to make sure that we were being unapologetic and putting our culture at the forefront to ensure our culture that, yo, this were we resonate because this is what we’re here for. That’s what has propelled us to be in the seat that we’re in today because we’re using our culture, events, music, fashion, those [things] that we gravitate towards, that has helped coach us and get through hard times.”

Silas echoed this very sentiment. He credits a strong support system, especially fatherhood, to helping propel himself, and his players, to the level that they’re at today. That impact isn’t just limited to the basketball court, as CoolxDad is on a mission to show that building the foundation of a support system can also uplift an entire community and nurture the next generation.

“We wouldn’t be in the positions that we’re in if it weren’t for the foundation that was built by our parents and our dads in particular,” Silas says. “Especially in the Black community, you don’t necessarily see that very much, where you know, you’re getting set up or you get a foot in the door because of what your dad did for you. Hopefully this is kind of the start of it, to where, in all aspects of life, we’re opening doors so we can have the opportunities, and oftentimes, it takes somebody to pull you up or give you the benefit of the doubt, even when you have doubts yourself. To have the confidence, that, you’ll be fine. [Like], C’mon, I got you. It’s special.”

In March of 2021, they hosted CoolxHistory, their initiative to uplift black and brown heritage and culture. On June 25, the program will be throwing a Fathers Basketball Tournament at the Sunnyside Community Center that will feature live music and refreshments.

Barnett highlights the support of his own family, his wife, and running CoolxDad to helping transform him into the leader, father and Black man that he is today. He wants that for every father, and Black man, too, and with CoolxDad, he’s on a mission to provide an opportunity to connect, open up, and help eradicate social stigmas and injustices.

“We need to build this community, because without having something that we feel safe in and that we can subscribe to, we’re just out here chasing our tails in this rat race. But more importantly, we want to make sure that we bring people to the table to have these uncomfortable conversations, because that’s when understanding happens. And if we can continue to build on that, we can look at minimizing, to then eradicating,  all of these social injustices and situations that we are seeing. And, also a real true perspective on our community.”
