Aaron Rodgers cites psychoactive ayahuasca tea for state of his mental health

Aaron Rodgers was interviewed regarding his mental health and made a pretty surprising revelation about his use of ayahuasca, a psychoactive tea.

From his “immunization” and not vaccination regarding COVID-19 to his participation in wild cleanses, it’s become clear that Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is quite fond of natural and holistic remedies. And that apparently extends to his approach with taking care of his mental health.

Yet, that doesn’t make his latest revelation in that capacity any less jarring.

In a podcast appearance with Onnit founder Aubrey Marcus (a supplement company), Rodgers spoke about his use of ayahuasca, a psychedelic tea that contains the hallucinogen DMT, to improve his mental health and his practice of self-love, but also in helping him as a teammate as well.

Aaron Rodgers used ayahuasca to improve mental health, help with self-love

“To me, one of the core tenets of your mental health is that self-love. That’s what ayahuasca did for me, was help me see how to unconditionally love myself,” Rodgers said (h/t to SI). “It’s only in that unconditional self love, that then I’m able to truly be able to unconditionally love others. And what better way to work on my mental health than to have an experience like that?”

The reigning back-to-back NFL MVP also said that process through ayahuasca, a tea that has been used for its properties for thousands of years in various cultures, helped him to become a better teammate as a “model of unconditional love” which is just as important as playing well or being a leader.

While fans, of course, like to poke fun at Rodgers’ holistic approach to many things, mental health is obviously a vastly important subject and it’s certainly a positive that the Packers star has reached a good place in that regard.

What’s shocking, though, is that his use of a hallucinogenic substance has led him to his point given the NFL’s longstanding policies regarding banned substances and the fact that players have been suspended for marijuana use frequently. That is certainly worth noting in this instance.

Jadon Sancho the most popular fantasy football choice among Man United players – Man United News And Transfer News

Jadon Sancho is the most popular choice among Man United players for fantasy football players so far this season.

Sancho, who has enjoyed a terrific pre-season, has so far been selected by 11.4% of players in the Premier League’s fantasy competition.

The England man has been priced at £7.5 million, one million more than his friend and fellow winger, Marcus Rashford.

Rashford is the second most selected, with 11.2% putting their faith in him.

David de Gea, priced at £5 million, is the third most popular choice at £7.5m, followed by a rejuvenated Anthony Martial, who is priced at £7m and was picked by 6.9% of players.

Martial was widely expected to be leaving the club this summer after a disastrous 2021/22 looked to put an end to his United career.

A loan with option to buy at Sevilla failed to produce his best form and he returned to Old Trafford with a huge question mark over his head.

The fact that he is now the fourth most picked in Premier League fantasy football is an incredible reflection on how he has come to life under Erik ten Hag on United’s pre-season tour.

One of last season’s most selected players, Cristiano Ronaldo, has only been selected by 4.3%, suggesting that most people believe that he will either leave or play second fiddle to Martial this season.

United’s most popular defensive selection is Diogo Dalot, who costs £4.5m and has been selected by 4.7% of players.

Dalot is another player who has been in fine form in pre-season and looks set to be the undisputed first choice right back.

Other than Alex Telles, who is expected to leave the club, the two least popular Red Devils selections have been Scott McTominay (£5m, selected by 0.3%) and Victor Lindelof (£4.5m, selected by 0.2%).

Percentages correct at time of writing, 3rd August 2022.

Cowboys make early training camp signing sure to bolster defense

The Dallas Cowboys just added veteran ex-Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr to give their defense a boost with training camp underway.

Cowboys fans have good reason to be excited about their linebacker corps this year with Micah Parsons and Leighton Vander Esch leading the way.

Now they have a third player to pin their hopes on: Anthony Barr.

The veteran linebacker finally signed with Dallas on Wednesday after months of speculation around him joining the Cowboys.

Cowboys bolster defense with Anthony Barr signing

Barr has been linked to the Cowboys for a while now. Senior defensive assistant George Edwards was Barr’s defensive coordinator in Minnesota for six years.

A four-time Pro Bowler, Barr brings pass rushing skills at outside linebacker but he’s positionally flexible with veteran know-how.

Barr missed much of the 2020 season because of a pectoral injury but he made a strong return in 2021 with 72 tackles, 2.5 sacks, three interceptions and five pass breakups.

At 30 years old he should have something left in the tank to contribute significantly for the Cowboys this year. He can be a mentor to Parsons while giving Dallas some cover for Vander Esch, who has had trouble staying healthy in his career.

The Cowboys needed the extra depth at linebacker and plugging in one of the top free agents still available is a nice way to address that problem.

Barr will now have plenty of time to get used to his surroundings.

He’ll also get a chance to face his former team this season. Dallas will take on the Vikings in Week 11 in Minnesota.

How long does NFL want to suspend QB?

The NFL will appeal the six-game Deshaun Watson suspension as they believe it was too lenient, but how long do they want the Browns QB out for?

Judge Sue L. Robinson issued her decision regarding the Deshaun Watson suspension earlier this week, ruling that the Cleveland Browns quarterback will be held out for the first six games of the 2022 season. However, the NFL is now taking steps to see that lengthened.

On Wednesday, the NFL filed an appeal in which they will look to increase the length of the suspension.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport tweeted out a PR release that further explains what is happening regarding the appeal, the short of it being that the league can’t appeal the factual findings of the appointed judge (Robinson in this case) but they are able to appeal the disciplinary decision, which is what they’re doing.

As noted, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will appoint who will hear the appeal. But the question that is more pressing is how long of a suspension the league is seeking for Deshaun Watson.

Deshaun Watson suspension: How long does NFL want to suspend QB?

Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network and formerly of The Houston Chronicle reported soon after news of the appeal that the NFL is seeking a full season suspension for the Browns quarterback. Specifically, per Jeff Darlington, they want an indefinite suspension with a minimum of one year.

There was a rightful public outcry over the initial ruling of six games for Watson’s suspension and reports had indicated that the league was pushing for something in the ballpark of a season-long suspension from the beginning, so their decision to appeal doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

Regardless, this is far from over. These proceedings could eventually lead to federal court depending on how the appeal transpires. And if it does lead to that point, there is a chance that Watson could suit up for the Browns in Week 1 against Baker Mayfield and the Panthers.

Stay tuned, because this definitely isn’t the last that will come from this situation.

Paige Bueckers Out For 2022-23 Season After Tearing ACL

Paige Bueckers will miss the upcoming season after an MRI revealed that she tore her ACL earlier this week.

According to a team statement released Tuesday, Bueckers suffered the season-ending injury during a team scrimmage on Monday. Her MRI on Tuesday confirmed the team’s worst fear. She will undergo surgery to repair her knee on Friday, and UConn will provide a recovery timetable after the procedure is finished.

We’re all devastated for Paige.” Coach Geno Auriemma said. “She’s worked really hard to get stronger and healthier this offseason, and this is an unfortunate setback. Paige is obviously an amazing basketball player, but she’s a better person and teammate, and it’s really unfortunate that this has happened to her. We’ll miss her presence on the court, but she’ll do everything she can to still lead and help her teammates this season. Our program will support Paige through her healing process to help her come back better and stronger.

The Huskies went 15-4 over the 19 games Bueckers missed after she suffered a torn meniscus injury. As a sophomore, Bueckers averaged 14.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. As a freshman, she swept the national player of the year awards after averaging 20.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game.

Aces Kierstan Bell is Ready for Her Big Moment in the WNBA

This story appears in WSLAM 2. Get your copy here.

Kierstan Bell thrives in big moments.

Bell was the second player to be named Ohio’s Ms. or Mr. Basketball three times. The other? LeBron James. Then she tallied over 1500 points in just three collegiate seasons.

Next up? The WNBA.

After announcing in January 2022 that she’d forgo her remaining eligibility and enter the WNBA Draft, Bell led FGCU to the ASUN Tournament championship and to a first round NCAA Tournament upset of fifth-seeded Virginia Tech.

Fast forward a few weeks, and it was time.

With the 11th pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft, Bell was headed to Las Vegas. She’d join an experienced Aces team and play for Hall of Famer Becky Hammon.

Bell twice won the Mid-Major Player of the Year Award named after Hammon, so it was a full circle experience.

“For her to be the head coach of Vegas and to get a good start, it’s an honor, and I’m just grateful that I get the opportunity to learn from one of the best,” Bell says.

How will her style fit Sin City?

“The energy and confidence that I bring to the floor just connects with everyone,” she says.

Of the best advice she’s received so far, Bell says, “Continue to give your best effort, pay attention and be ready when your name’s called.”

Valuable words for a player ready to make some noise.

Magic Johnson Calls For the NBA to Retire Bill Russell’s Number

Words cannot simply describe the impact that Bill Russell made on the NBA; his pioneering and thinking will be sorely missed by all. But his legacy lives on as some notable figures around the League feel that No. 6 should be immortalized by the NBA.

Count Lakers legend Magic Johnson amongst the many calling for Bill Russell’s number to be retired across all of the NBA.

Russell would join Jackie Robinson in a select class of retired numbers in North American sports; Robinson had his number 42 retired all over Major League Baseball.

Magic Johnson wants the 11-time champs number retired to honor everything Russell did beyond the lines of play. Russell’s work as a champion and life activist has certainly earned him the right, and Johnson believes that legacy furthers his case for a League-wide jersey retirement.

Some NBA players do still wear the No. 6, most notably LeBron James, who switched from 23 to 6 after his first three years in Laker land.

“It’s always been a part of me, to be honest,” James said in 2021. “Six has a lot of meaning to me, from my family and numbers and things of that nature to what I believe in and things of that sort, but my mentality doesn’t change.”

No comment has been made yet by James or NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, but Johnson’s pitch on Twitter is a great suggestion.

Lexie Hull is Embracing Her Chance with the Fever

This story appears in the second edition of WSLAM 2. Get your copy here.

For the first time since 2019, the WNBA invited the top 12 prospects to a live WNBA Draft show in New York City. Many mock drafts had Stanford guard Lexie Hull projected to go in the second round. So when the Indiana Fever selected the 2021 NCAA Champion sixth overall, she wasn’t in the building.

Hull hoped she’d land in Indiana after having productive pre-Draft conversations with the team, who were looking for someone with competitiveness, someone who works hard every possession and someone who “hates to lose,” she learned.

“My entire time at Stanford, those were the things I loved to do,” Hull said to the media on May 15.

She finished her college career as a three-time Pac-12 champion and a two-time Pac-12 All-Defensive team member. Although Hull believed the Fever would be a good fit, she had no idea she’d be their sixth pick.

“I was just shocked and happy to be able to spend [the WNBA Draft] with my family,” Hull says. “It was a great moment I’ll remember forever.”

After months of WNBA experience, Hull is leaning on fellow rookies to make the best of her first professional season.

“Having five rookies on the team, I definitely love it because we’re growing and we’re going through this process together,” Hull says. Among the five rookies are first-round picks Emily Engstler and NaLyssa Smith.

As of press time, Hull has appeared in nine games for the Fever and averaged 7.6 minutes and less than 2 points per game. It is a different role than at Stanford but she knows that’s part of the process. “Every team you’re on, your role is different. I’m just trying to learn as much [as I can] along the way,” Hull says. “I think that’s something that all the rookies here are really excited about, just the growth we’ll be able to have and the impact on the game will come.”

Barcelona set to meet Frenkie de Jong’s agent today – Man United News And Transfer News

Manchester United’s attempts to secure Erik ten Hag’s primary target Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona has now entered its 13th week and it might not be long before the English club get their answer.

Barca president Joan Laporta has confirmed that the club has to register their new signings by August 13. And for the Catalan giants to register the likes of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie, they need to offload quite a number of their current players.

The Dutch midfielder is their most saleable asset at the moment with both United and Premier League rivals Chelsea attempting to sign the diminutive playmaker.

FDJ agent in Barcelona

The Red Devils had already agreed a deal worth an initial £63 million with the Catalan giants and only the deferred wages issue has held back the deal for so long with Barca refusing to pay the £14million.

According to Spanish publication SPORT, the La Liga club are set to meet with the agents of De Jong and another wantaway star Martin Braithwaite to clear up their future by today.

The report states, “In the case of the former, Barcelona want to advance his potential move to Manchester United or Chelsea to earn a big transfer fee, although they want to know what the Dutchman‘s position is, first hand.”

Despite spending over £130million this transfer window, Barcelona cannot afford to pay what they owe De Jong and register their new players while staying withing La Liga’s salary cap.

Barca cannot pay FDJ

According to Marca‘s revelations, the Netherlands international is owed €16m to be spread over the remaining four years of his deal, plus an additional €1m to be paid in the final year.

On top of this, his basic salary and loyalty bonuses worth €15.6 million coupled with his appearance and performance-related add-ons could take the total figure well into nine figures.

The Catalan club want a solution and De Jong’s agent Ali Dursun is set to meet with the club hierarchy and decide on the next course of action. The player has time and again stated that he does not want to leave his dream club.

Despite Laporta’s public statements, the only option in Barca’s hands are his sale or forcing the Dutch footballer to take another pay cut.

United or Chelsea?

De Jong’s entourage has so far flatly refused to agree to yet another salary reduction especially considering the amount the club has spent on new players.

Chelsea have accelerated their attempts at convincing the 25-year-old and they think the prospect of playing in the Champions League and relocating to London might tilt the scale in their favour.

United are banking on the rapport shared between Ten Hag and De Jong during their Ajax days as the decisive factor which will prompt the player to choose Manchester as his next decision.

Dallas Wings End Chicago Sky’s Franchise-Record Home Win Streak

The Dallas Wings faced off with the Chicago Sky Tuesday Night. The Wings were able to defeat the Sky in their own backyard 84-74, and broke the Sky’s franchise-record 10-game home win streak.

Even without their star player Arike Ogunbowale, who ranks third in the League in scoring at 19.9 points, who is out with an ankle injury, the Wings still managed to get the job done.

Marina Mabrey and Teaira McCowan stepped up for the Wings. Mabrey scored a season-high of 26 points, and McCowan followed up with 20 points and 12 rebounds, her third straight double-double outing.

For the Sky, Kahleah Copper led Chicago with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Azurá Stevens, Allie Quigley, and Emma Meesseman each scored 14 points.

With less than two weeks left in the regular season, the Sky holds a one-game lead over the Las Vegas Aces in the League’s . The Wings truly needed this win in order to fight for a playoff spot Dallas was able to move 1 1/2 games ahead of the Phoenix Mercury who lands at seventh place.
