Pictures: Talented academy duo join Man United first-team training ahead of clash vs. Brentford – Man United News And Transfer News

5

Manchester United academy duo Zachary Baumann and Jacob Devaney were part of the group that trained at Carrington on Friday ahead of the club’s weekend clash against Brentford.

United are set to return to Premier League action on Saturday when they travel to the Gtech Community Stadium to take on the Bees.

Erik ten Hag’s men will be heading into the match off the back of a pulsating 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final victory at the expense of bitter rivals. No doubt confidence within the camp is at an all-time high.

Most of the United players who were away with their respective national teams for the March international break were present at Carrington to take part in Thursday’s training session.

The majority of the senior players were present as the team stepped up its preparation for Sunday’s meeting with Thomas Frank’s side.

There were also a few surprise names who participated in the drills.

17-year-old Zachary Baumann was involved in first-team training. The teenager has been with United since his childhood and has steadily worked his way through the academy set-up.

Baumann has been something of a regular presence for the U18s this term and has managed 12 appearances in the U18 Premier League.

The central midfielder has one goal to his name in that time.

A testament to his ability and great potential, the Bolton-born starlet has also amassed three games and 236 minutes for Travis Binnion’s U21s, despite being a first-year under-18. He also has one goal in Premier League 2.

Baumann recently returned from a long-term injury lay-off but has featured in the U21’s last three clashes against West Brom, Middlesbrough and Derby. It was against Derby earlier this month that he found the back of the net.

Also present in United first-team training was 16-year-old Jacob Devaney. It was the first time Devaney took part in sessions with the senior squad.

Like Baumann, Devaney is also a defensive midfielder by trade. He joined the 20-time English champions at the age of six.

Devaney has so far made 18 appearances for the U18s in the Premier League and has two assists to his name.

Since his arrival at the club in 2022, Ten Hag has proven he is not shy to promote youngsters who he feels are talented enough and have what it takes to make it at Old Trafford.

Often, Ten Hag has allowed the most promising academy starlets to train with the more experienced players and gain some valuable insights.

Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are the Dutchman’s two greatest success stories in this regard.

Amadou Onana: Man United set to face competition from West Ham and Bayern Munich for midfield target – Man United News And Transfer News

5

Manchester United are set to face stiff competition from both the Premier League and abroad in their pursuit of reported midfield target and Everton star Amadou Onana.

The middle of the park is an area of the pitch Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS could seek to bolster in the summer transfer window. This need could be made more urgent in the event that Casemiro leaves United at the end of the season.

The Brazilian, whose performances have taken a sharp decline this term, continues to be linked with a switch to the Saudi Pro League.

Should his time at Old Trafford come to an end, he will certainly need to be replaced to ensure Erik ten Hag and the team are not left short. Onana has emerged as a prime candidate for the club in this respect.

The Toffees star has been strongly linked to the Red Devils and last month, it emerged that United are prepared to table an offer to secure his services ahead of other parties interested in him.

A subsequent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that United are indeed monitoring Onana and his Goodison Park teammate Jarrad Branthwaite.

According to Football Insider, David Moyes’ West Ham are also eyeing the Belgium international and are plotting a transfer swoop for him.

Before completing a move to Everton in the summer of 2022, the Irons were the heavy favourites to sign Onana before the deal collapsed, paving the way for the Merseyside outfit to lure him to their side.

Football Insider notes that Moyes is in the market for a central midfielder and has identified the United target as the perfect choice.

It’s not only the Hammers that are hot on the trail of Onana.

If a report by The Telegraph is anything to go by, United also have Bayern Munich to contend with in the race to land the 22-year-old player.

The Bundesliga giants are poised to step up their attempts to add the Belgian to their ranks.

The British news outlet points out that Bayern consider Onana an ideal alternative to Fulham’s Joao Palhinha, whom they failed to sign last summer.

Journalist Mike McGrath further states that Everton are set to demand more than £60million for their highly-covered star.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Onana will be on the move and it’s up to United to ensure they’re not pipped to one of their main targets.

As the situation develops, Everton may find themselves with no choice but to part ways with Onana.

In addition to the mounting interest in him, Sean Dyche’s side are in significant financial trouble after two breaches of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).

Everton are already working with a six-point deduction and there could be further misery on the horizon, with the Blues eagerly awaiting the verdict of a second hearing for further rule-breaking of financial regulations.

From United’s perspective, Onana would be the perfect Casemiro upgrade. The Senegalese-born star is an anchor in midfield who is very adept at utilizing his frame to sweep the ball away from opponents and winning back possession.

At 6’4, he is an imposing figure and boasts incredible power and athleticism that would make him slot effortlessly into Ten Hag’s plans.

Onana is very good in the air and is rarely outdone in aerial duels. His towering physique is also an advantage in the opposition box when attacking set-pieces.

Ireland football chiefs hold three meetings with Roy Keane over managerial vacancy – Man United News And Transfer News

3

FAI chiefs have reportedly held three separate meetings with legendary Manchester United captain Roy Keane as they close in on the appointment of a new men’s team manager.

The former United midfielder won 67 caps for Ireland and even led the national team to the 2002 World Cup but didn’t play.

Keane re-joined the senior Ireland set-up, this time in the capacity of an assistant coach under Martin O’Neill between 2013 and 2018.

The 1999 treble winner has since been working as a TV pundit for both Sky Sports and ITV.

Earlier this year in January, Keane expressed his desire to make a return to football in a managerial role. He confirmed that he had been the subject of advances and offers but was only open to the right opportunity.

When pressed on whether the Ireland job appeals to him, Keane explained that he enjoyed international football as O’Neill’s assistant and he appreciated the dynamics of just coaching the players and not dealing with board members every week as is usually the case at club level.

Ireland are currently without a permanent manager after Stephen Kenny’s contract was not renewed before Christmas.

Ex-United defender John O’Shea has been serving as interim boss.

According to The Irish Examiner, Keane has held talks on three occasions with FAI officials, who want to finalize an appointment in the coming weeks.

On Wednesday, the FAI stated, “The board of the FAI had its scheduled end of month meeting this morning and a range of issues were discussed.”

“The process to appoint our senior men’s team head coach will now be finalised, led by the CEO (Jonathan Hill) and director of football (Canham), with an announcement planned in April, as planned.”

President Paul Cooke reiterated this stance and remarked, “We’re on schedule for an April announcement. The (precise) timing is not certain at this moment in time.”

“We’ve narrowed the process well down. We would be comfortable that the candidate will fit into our plan and processes going forward. The intention is that the manager will start as soon as possible.”

The Irish Examiner notes that the final decision as to who becomes Ireland’s next manager will be consensually made by a team consisting of Hill, Canham and board member Packie Bonner. It’s these three individuals who have held conversations with Keane.

Keane’s former teammate O’Shea was asked about his chances of assuming the national team hot seat. This could see him possibly come up against Keane for the vacant job.

O’Shea admitted, “If I could be the manager of Real Madrid, Manchester United or Ireland in the morning, I would make it happen.”

“I would tell you, I would give you the clarity, I don’t have it either. From the wording I’ve heard before the previous games, they said they have (a manager). That’s my understanding of it.”

He also relayed that he was not approached by the FAI when they were holding the first round of interviews.

O’Shea refused to rule out the likelihood of returning to his former assistant role once a new manager is appointed – a scenario that could see him work under Keane in the Ireland dugout.

Gary Neville discusses possible managerial options for Manchester United should they sack Erik ten Hag – Man United News And Transfer News

4

Manchester United’s disappointing season has left Erik ten Hag fighting for his future at Old Trafford.

With the club looking unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League, the FA Cup appears to be Ten Hag’s only lifeline to save his position.

However, given United’s poor campaign, the rumour mill has been in overdrive with names that could potentially replace the Dutchman at the Theatre of Dreams.

Speaking on the Overlap Youtube channel, Gary Neville has given his verdict on the leading candidates to take over should United choose to make a change.

England manager Gareth Southgate is reportedly the front-runner for the post as things stand with Wolves boss Gary O’Neil and ex-Chelsea and Brighton coach Graham Potter also touted.

Neville admitted he isn’t particularly enamored by any of the aforementioned names despite strong performances in their respective current and previous positions.

“As well as Gareth has done with England, I’ve never seen that as a fit with Man United. I don’t see Graham Potter as a fit and that’s been a strong rumour too. I don’t see the fit between Gary O’Neil and United.

“Instinctively as a fan you hear a name and you feel it or you don’t feel it. It’s not a feeling I’ve had. I’ve not woke up and thought they look like a Manchester United manager,” he said.

Neville said that given the options available, he would stick with Ten Hag for another season at least, particularly given the fact United could still end their underwhelming campaign with a trophy.

“I would like to see him stay in the sense that I’m not quite sure at the moment who else is out there. So for me I don’t like the idea of him leaving and United bringing in the kind of names that have been suggested. That doesn’t feel right.

“I would rather stick with Erik ten Hag and believe in him. If he has another season like this he obviously won’t still be there but we could still win the FA Cup and we could sneak into the Champions League,” he stated.

Neville further believes that Ten Hag “should be better” after his experience this season with contrasting campaigns helping him understand his role better.

Finally, the former United captain made a cheeky reference to one manager that will be out of work in the summer before doubling down on his belief that INEOS should stick with the 54-year-old.

“If Jurgen Klopp was on the market or you could get a world-class manager in it might be different but when you look at the options, we could end up with someone who isn’t as good as Erik ten Hag and hasn’t got his pedigree,” he added.

United and Ten Hag will be desperate to end the season strong with the team now back in Manchester for the run-in, after the last international break concluded this week.

Ten Hag takes his troops to Brentford on Saturday night in a bid to make up ground on Aston Villa and Tottenham who sit above them in the Premier League table.

Mitchell van der Gaag linked with a return to Ajax – Man United News And Transfer News

4

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag’s future is far from secure after a disappointing sophomore campaign in the Premier League.

The Red Devils are currently languishing in sixth, nine points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa with Champions League qualification looking unlikely at the moment.

The team also crashed out of Europe’s premier competition in the group stages and failed to defend their Carabao Cup crown. The only saving grace has been their form in the FA Cup with United beating Liverpool 4-3 to make the semis.

The team will need to play out of their skins to finish in the top four and add to their trophy cabinet at the end of the season or else new co-owners INEOS might be forced to look elsewhere.

EtH’s uncertain future

Ten Hag will not be short of suitors with Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Stuttgart all reportedly interested in the Dutchman.

But the new sporting director of Ajax is also keen on reuniting with their former manager who has been termed as the “dream candidate” according to Voetbal International.

However, Ten Hag is reportedly “not available” at the moment, indicating a change in INEOS’ stance which increases the likelihood of him remaining at the helm under the new minority stakeholders.

Ajax could subsequently shift their focus to the man who has been working alongside Ten Hag since the last few years, assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag.

He was also there with Ten Hag during his time at Ajax and hence, knows the Amsterdam club inside out and to this day, holds a special relationship with many of the youngster stars.

“The best Dutch trainers of the moment, Erik ten Hag, Peter Bosz and Arne Slot, are not available. Although the door is not closed in advance for a foreigner, preference is given to a Dutchman who is familiar with the philosophy and identity of Ajax.

“It will be (Alex) Kroes’ choice, but it is crucial that it becomes a broadly supported decision, which Blind and Van Gaal in particular can agree with.

Van der Gaag to Ajax

“Erik ten Hag is not available, but his assistant is also doing well. Mitchell van der Gaag has been working with Ten Hag since 2021, one year at Ajax and now for the second season at Manchester United.

“Ten Hag gives his assistant a lot of responsibility as a field coach. Van der Gaag is tactically skilled and cherishes a good relationship with a number of players from the current Ajax selection, such as Brian Brobbey.”

Eric Ramsay has already jumped ship to the MLS while rumours are linking forwards coach Benni McCarthy with an impending exit as well.

Van der Gaag’s exit could hit Ten Hag hard and having to build a new coaching team behind him is not always easy as Jose Mourinho found out in his last season at the club.

From Spain: Manchester United have asked about Spanish striker Joselu’s price in advance of summer window – Man United News And Transfer News

3

Manchester United have been linked with a surprise move for Espanyol forward, Joselu, who is currently on loan at Real Madrid.

The Red Devils have struggled with attacking depth all season as new signing, Rasmus Hojlund, has had to carry the significant burden of being the club’s only recognised striker, as Anthony Martial has typically spent most of the season on the treatment table.

United have had to play many key games with Marcus Rashford up front as a result, and even he admits that this is not his favourite position at all.

In a far from ideal scenario, Hojlund has coped admirably, scoring 13 goals in all competitions and winning over the fan base with his enthusiastic play.

However, it has been reported that with Martial’s contract highly unlikely to be renewed, the club want to bring in a striker to bolster their attacking department.

United have been linked to numerous strikers like Harry Kane and Ivan Toney but it is more likely that INEOS decide to give Hojlund the chance to continue to be the club’s starting number nine and look to bring in an experienced back up to take the pressure of the Dane when necessary.

Consequently, Spanish outlet Relevo report that, “two members of United’s sport management team travelled to Spain a couple of weeks ago” to ask about Joselu’s situation and price for the summer transfer window.

The Spanish international is an Espanyol player but is currently on loan at Real Madrid where he has scored 11 goals and assisted two more in all competitions.

“They met with clubs and agents with the aim of learning about players’ situations and exploring options for the next market. Something common at this time of year. And, as Relevo has learned, one of the names in which they showed interest was Joselu, the Real Madrid forward”.

The outlet claims that the 34 year old would be ideal for United as he “meets the characteristics they are looking for as a veteran with good physique, back-to-goal play and a great finisher. In addition, he knows the Premier League, where he played for four seasons”.

As is usually the case with Spanish papers, they assert that the player’s priority is to stay at Real Madrid come the end of the season, as the player is a massive fan, seen by his attendance of the Champions League final in 2022 against Liverpool even when he wasn’t playing for the club.

Nonetheless, it will be an interesting story to follow as despite his age of 34, he is a proven international striker who has contributed massively to Real Madrid’s success this season, as they look on course for another La Liga title and are safely through to the quarter finals of the Champions League where they will take on Manchester City.

Moreover, his parent club Espanyol will sell to the highest bidder and should United be able to outspend Madrid for the player, the Catalan club would have no qualms about sending the player back to England.

However, English fans will also remember his spells at Newcastle where he only scored seven goals in 52 appearances and had four strikes in 27 matches for Stoke City. If he were to return to England, he would need to prove to fans that experience has helped him adapt to the English league better than the first time.

Manchester United and Liverpool work together to teach young people about the impact of tragedy chanting – Man United News And Transfer News

4

Manchester United and Liverpool have come together to try and stamp out the odious habit of tragedy chanting that occasionally rears its ugly head at North-West derby games.

The two clubs are not only the two most successful in England but also share the horrific experience of their club living through a massive tragedy.

The Munich Air disaster in 1958 is still imprinted massively in the United psyche, as could be seen in recent commemorations to the event last month.

This was when a plane carrying the Man United squad back from a European tie in Belgrade, failed to take off and crashed in horrendous conditions, killing eight players and 15 more people.

Liverpool themselves suffered a massive human tragedy when 97 of their supporters were crushed to death as far too many fans had been let into their end during an FA Cup semi-final versus Nottingham Forest. This is known as the Hillsborough disaster, as it took place at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground who were hosting the semi-final as a neutral venue.

Despite the fact both sides should understand such serious events, a small minority of fans on both sides are guilty of mocking the other’s suffering.

It even occurred most recently in United’s pulsating FA Cup win over their old rivals earlier this month. An individual was arrested by the Greater Manchester Police after the game for their involvement in tragedy chanting and the Football Association rightfully condemned the events.

Consequently, the two clubs have come together before the next fixture which sees United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford again, this time in a Premier League match on the 7th of April.

The Mirror report that “the foundations of both clubs have come together to deliver an education programme on the impact of tragedy chanting”.

“Former United defender Wes Brown and ex-Liverpool skipper Phil Thompson – who won 12 league titles and five European Cups between them – were involved first-hand in the initiative”.

“The pair spoke with students about the effect the Munich and Hillsborough disasters had on the two clubs, their supporters and the cities, to give them a greater understanding of their impact”.

“The United and Liverpool foundations have developed the programme in partnership with the Premier League, which has taken a hard line against tragedy chanting by fans”.

John Shiels, CEO of Manchester United Foundation, said: “It’s unacceptable to use the loss of life, in relation to any tragedy, to score points and it’s time for it to stop”.

“We are proud to come together with the LFC Foundation as we believe education will break the generational cycle on this issue and help thousands of young people across this region understand the impact tragedy-related abuse has”.

Mockery and banter are a key part of the football fan experience and nobody would seriously suggest stopping it. However, it crosses a human line when it descends to mocking the loss of life and in reality, much more important issues than football.

Hopefully the two giant clubs can continue to work together to try and put an end to the horrific scenes once and for all.

Gleison Bremer is not as high a priority for Manchester United as Jarrad Branthwaite – Man United News And Transfer News

2

Despite a lot of noise to the contrary, Juventus’ Gleison Bremer is not high up the list of Manchester United’s priority centre backs this summer.

It is as clear as day that United and INEOS will aim to bolster the central defensive department this upcoming window as uncertainty surrounds many of United’s defenders.

In fact, one could argue that not even Lisandro Martinez is entirely safe due to the player’s ongoing injury struggles over the last year.

The futures of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Jonny Evans are also very much up in the air.

Therefore, one name that has been linked regularly to United since the turn of the new year has been Gleison Bremer.

There have been many reports suggesting that the Red Devils are very keen to bring him to Old Trafford this summer as it was relayed here that the centre back is United’s number one target this summer.

What’s more, it was even reported yesterday that Sir Jim Ratcliffe would have no issue paying the player’s €58 million (£49.7m) release clause, such is INEOS’ keenness to bring the player in.

It has also been suggested that one of the main reasons behind United’s interest in the player is heavily connected to potentially new sporting director, Dan Ashworth, who is said to be a big fan of the player.

However, GIVEMESPORT takes a different angle to the avalanche of reports claiming that Bremer is of huge interest to the Old Trafford side.

The outlet reports, “Manchester United are not prioritising a summer move for Juventus star Gleison Bremer as key figures at Old Trafford have already made more progress in their bid to land alternative defensive targets ahead of the transfer window reopening, sources have revealed”.

“Manchester United have not pinpointed Bremer as one of their first-choice targets despite being in the hunt for fresh options at the heart of their backline”.

They also state that Juventus will not accept anything as low as £49.7m and in fact, value the player at closer to £69million.

Furthermore, Bremer also has a long term deal at Juventus which would further complicate matters.

“Although GIVEMESPORT sources have been informed that it would not be impossible for Manchester United to turn their attentions towards the 27-year-old if his services are offered to them through agents, no progress over a potential deal has been made at this stage and speculation over his future are predominantly coming from Italy”.

It is suggested that one of those targets who is more advanced than Bremer is that of Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Everton defender is the one player that has been linked even more to the club than the Brazil international as of late.

The website asserts, “Jarrad Branthwaite has been earmarked as a standout defensive target by Manchester United scouts after Ten Hag was keen to gain information on centre-backs currently in the Premier League, and there is confidence that the Everton man will become available regardless of whether his current employers stave off relegation to the Championship”.

It had been reported since February that despite interest from numerous clubs, United still lead the way for the 21 year old and the profile of the player very much fits into INEOS’ desire to sign the next big things, as many tip the centre back to reach the very top.

At 21 years old, there is much more room to develop than the 27 year old Bremer and the Englishman has shown he can handle the Premier League as he has performed admirably in his first full season playing in the division.

It had even been mentioned that United may look to bring in the two centre backs but with the high prices being mentioned for both and many holes to fix this summer in the squad it would seem it will be a choice between these two or possibly another central defender such as Jean-Clair Todibo or Marc Guehi.

Dwight Yorke says Rasmus Hojlund is “still not convincing enough” despite his upturn in fortunes – Man United News And Transfer News

10

Former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke has claimed that he’s still not completely sold on Rasmus Hojlund despite his improved fortunes on the pitch.

United forked out £72m to sign Hojlund from Atalanta last summer.

Despite being prolific in the Champions League before the Red Devils’ humiliating elimination from the competition, Hojlund struggled to find the back of the net in the Premier League.

The Denmark international endured a difficult start to life in England’s top flight and needed 14 games to finally break his duck.

Hojlund finally opened his Premier League goalscoring account on Boxing Day during a sensational comeback victory against Aston Villa. His was the winning strike on that occasion.

Since then, the United talisman has been on an upward trajectory. In 2024, Hojlund has scored in five appearances. Hojlund also set a new record as he became the youngest-ever player to score in six consecutive Premier League games.

The København-born star has so far plundered 13 goals and two assists in 31 matches across all competitions.

It should be mentioned that he has missed a number of clashes due to injury.

His exploits earned him the Premier League’s February Player of the Month award.

However, according to Yorke who spoke on talkSPORT, Hojlund still has a lot to prove before he can be considered the finished article.

The 1999 treble winner said, “I think optimistic is probably the right word at this moment in time. When you go to United and you get off to a very bad start, which he did, you just question whether he’s ever going to return [the goals].”

“He’s young, he’s playing in a team that is struggling and is inconsistent, so it’s very difficult circumstances for him to come into, especially with such a big price tag.”

Yorke added, “That’s a lot to ask of a young man. But with a bit of perseverance, he’s showing signs. He’s still not convincing enough for me at the moment but I’m happy that he’s at least got some goals.”

Hojlund and United return to action on Saturday when they travel to the Gtech Community Stadium to face off against Thomas Frank’s Brentford.

Manchester United desperate to sell Donny van de Beek, could agree to a further discount – Man United News And Transfer News

5

Manchester United’s penchant for overpaying means the club are currently in a precarious situation with regards to FFP and they need to raise money before focusing on recruitment.

That is why new co-owners INEOS are planning for a massive summer clearout with more than 10 players linked with an exit as the club look to raise over €100 million in sales.

One of them who is expected to be on his way out is Donny van de Beek, who has endured a horrid time since his €39 million move to Old Trafford back in 2020.

He started only 19 games in his first two seasons with both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and interim manager Ralf Rangnick not deeming him good enough to start games consistently for the club.

Donny’s nightmare United spell

The former RB Leipzig boss even proceeded to sanction a loan exit to Everton which also did not quite work out. When Erik ten Hag was named manager, the thinking was the former Ajax coach could get a tune out of the versatile midfielder.

Both had enjoyed great success in Amsterdam, however, when Ten Hag did land up in Manchester, he found a player who was completely shorne of confidence and looked like a shadow in most games.

Under the Dutchman, the 25-year-old started in only four games last season and managed only 21 minutes this term before the decision was taken to send him to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan with the Bundesliga side having the option of making his temporary stay permanent for €10 million.

But so far, Van de Beek has started only four times for the German club with Dino Toppmoller even going as far as to exclude him from the UEFA Conference League squad.

Frankfurt are unlikely to permanently sign the Netherlands international and as per Soccer News, Ajax could pounce with United desperate to sell.

However, the Dutch giants are not even willing to spend €10 million for their former hero and United could agree an even more discounted price to get rid of Van de Beek’s wages.

“The decision about the midfielder’s future in the Bundesliga has already been made: in Frankfurt they do not believe that the former Ajax player is worth the agreed amount of ten million euros.

Further discount

“And so Van de Beek will have to report back to Manchester United in a few months, but they want to release him as quickly as possible.

“United are keen to sell Van de Beek, partly in view of the Financial Fair Play rules and possible purchases. Ajax have been linked with a move for their former crowd favorite for some time now and the Johan Cruijff ArenA could use a few reinforcements.

“Van de Beek is also affordable, since The Red Devils want to earn ten million euros from the sale and there also seems to be room for negotiation.”

Van de Beek’s stock has fallen massively and returning to familiar surroundings could help reignite a failing career.

His current market value stands at an abysmal €7 million and it looks like United could agree a similar fee and in the process, take a huge hit on their initial investment once again.
