‘He complains a lot’ – Antonio Conte criticizes Arsenal boss Arteta

‘He complains a lot’ – Antonio Conte takes aim at Mikel Arteta as Gabriel injury update provided

Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte was not shy in taking aim at Arsenal counterpart Mikel Arteta, on the back of the clash between the two clubs on Thursday evening.

The latest edition of the North London Derby, of course, played out a short time ago.

Ahead of a crunch Premier League showdown at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, both sides were no doubt fully aware of exactly what was on the line, amid the tense ongoing battle for a top-4 berth.

And, when all was said and done, it was the evening’s hosts who emerged triumphant, to close to within a point of the Champions League spots.

A Harry Kane double, either side of Rob Holding’s needless dismissal, set Spurs on their way to a comfortable three points, before Son Heung-min added some gloss to the scoreline early in the 2nd-half:

Speaking to the media on the back of a damaging night all-round for his side, it therefore came as little surprise to hear Mikel Arteta in altogether foul humour post-match.

When drawn specifically on the standard of officiating in the clash, which saw both a penalty awarded against Arsenal and the aforementioned Holding sent off, the Spaniard suggested that revealing his true feelings would likely culminate in a six-month suspension on the part of the FA:

One individual, though, evidently left altogether unimpressed by Arteta’s comments, was opposite number Antonio Conte.

Speaking in his own post-match press conference, Tottenham’s boss took firm aim at his Arsenal counterpart, revealing his belief that Arteta simply complains too much:

Gabriel latest

Elsewhere on the Arsenal front, Mikel Arteta also took the time to provide an early update on the wellbeing of Gabriel Magalhaes.

Gunners stopper Gabriel was forced to limp out of proceedings late at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with what appeared to be a muscular issue.

In turn, ahead of a crucial meeting with Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in just four days’ time, the Brazilian’s name unsurprisingly took centre stage in his manager’s presser.

Arteta, though, went on to reveal his hope that the problem will ultimately turn out to be ‘not much’:

Benzema levels Raul as Vinicius bags first hat-trick in Real Madrid rout

Real Madrid talisman Karim Benzema has continued to etch his name into the history books of the club on Thursday night.

Carlo Ancelotti’s troops were of course back in action a short time ago.

Having long sewn up the La Liga title, Los Blancos welcomed Segunda-bound Levante to the Bernabeu, no doubt keen to put on a show for the club’s fanbase.

And, when all was said and done, this is precisely what Real went on to do.

A rampant display ultimately culminated in the capital giants emerging on the right side of a 6-0 scoreline, to reestablish their 12-point advantage atop Spain’s top-flight.

Vinicius Jr. proved the star of the show, finding the net on a trio of occasions to secure the first hat-trick of his Real Madrid career.

Luka Modric, meanwhile, was also at the treble, albeit from a creative standpoint on his way to a head-turning three assists across the opening 45 minutes of play.

And too on target were all of Ferland Mendy, Rodrygo and Karim Benzema, capping another stellar night’s work amid what has proven a season to remember on the white half of Madrid.

Raul matched

As alluded to above, though, in truth, it is the name of that man Benzema which has taken its place front and centre in the headlines on Thursday night.

This comes with Real’s lethal frontman, in bagging an eye-watering 44th goal of the campaign, having joined some altogether elusive company in the storied history of one of world football’s biggest clubs.

Benzema, across his Blancos career as a whole, has now found the net on no fewer than 323 occasions.

This tally is good enough for the Frenchman to join club icon Raul Gonzalez in 2nd on the list of all-time goalscorers in the Spanish capital.

Benzema now trails only former teammate and 5-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in the standings, albeit with the Portuguese remaining a full 127 goals clear of his one-time partner in crime.

Barcelona confirm fresh personnel blow ahead of Getafe clash

Spanish giants Barcelona have, on Thursday, confirmed a fresh blow in the club’s personnel ranks.

The latest player set for a potential spell on the sidelines? Eric Garcia.

Stopper Garcia has of course enjoyed a productive first season back in Catalunya since returning from Manchester City last summer, notching starts in 23 of Barca’s 36 La Liga outings.

After featuring from the off en route to a 3-1 downing of Celta Vigo earlier this week, though, the 21-year-old suffered something of an unusual injury, in his right thumb.

In a post across the club’s social media platforms, the Blaugrana therefore confirmed that Garcia is set to go under the knife to solve the problem, ahead of ‘a new medical announcement’ over the coming days.

Getafe up next

Garcia’s imminent surgery means that the defender is altogether likely to sit out this weekend, when Xavi Hernandez’s troops return to La Liga action.

After making it three wins on the spin at the expense of the aforementioned Celta on Tuesday, Barcelona will make the trip to the Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, for a meeting with Getafe.

The Blaugrana are set to head into proceedings in Iberia sitting pretty in 2nd in the Spanish top-flight table, having long secured a spot back in the Champions League for next season.

Newcastle United ready bid for Dominic Calvert Lewin this summer

Newcastle United are ready to make an audacious swoop for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer according to reports in England, as they look to strengthen their frontline.

The Magpies have enjoyed a brilliant second half of the Premier League campaign, and have become the first side to stay up despite not winning any of their first 14 Premier League games.

To put that into perspective, they now have 11 wins, and with two games to go could still finish in the top half of the table. However, goalscoring has been a problem: Eddie Howe’s side have scored just 40 all season, the 8th lowest in the division, and have been without Callum Wilson for a long stretch of the season thanks to injury.

Calvert Lewin in the crosshairs

As a result, the newly-minted club will certainly be in the market for forward reinforcements this summer, and, as per the Telegraph, Dominic Calvert-Lewin is atop their wishlist.

The Englishman has also struggled with injury this season, making just 13 appearances and returning 3 goals. Nonetheless, he has hit double figures in the two previous seasons, and at 25 years old is just beginning to come into his prime.

Last summer, he was thought to have been on the radar of Arsenal, though they now appear more intent on signing Gabriel Jesus. As a result, it may be Newcastle that steal a march on the Gunners for his services.

‘The Magpies have identified Calvert-Lewin as one of their priority targets this summer and have been encouraged to believe the player would like to make the move before the start of next season’, the report claims.

Meanwhile, they are also expected to land Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, with the same report claiming that the French teenage sensation is now ‘expected to join after a move for the forward collapsed on deadline day in January when the player was reluctant to leave France so soon after breaking into the first team.’

Thomas Tuchel fumes as red card challenge leaves Matteo Kovacic ‘very unlikely’ for FA Cup final

Thomas Tuchel has revealed that Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic has been left ‘very unlikely’ to be able to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final against Liverpool after being taken off injured against Leeds United.

The Blues won the game comfortably by a scoreline of 3-0 that could, and should, have been more. But the occasion was soured from a west London point of view thanks to a horror challenge from Dan James on Kovacic, which the Welshman saw red for.

Kovacic, who was caught on the ankle, was unable to continue, and was taken off after half an hour for Ruben Loftus Cheek, causing concern with an FA Cup final just days away.

Tuchel runs the rule

And, speaking to the media after the game, Thomas Tuchel made it very clear that the midfielder is a major doubt for the game, with Kovacic still in a lot of pain from the challenge.

‘I tell you not as a coach and not as an expert, but for me it is very unlikely. First of all he never goes out. He has a swollen ankle and is in a lot of pain’, the German revealed.

‘I am not a doctor and we need to wait for the examinations, but it is very likely he can’t play. It is absolutely very bad news for us.’

‘If he misses it I’m very disappointed because he was a clear starter. You look at the quality today, with Jorginho and him in midfield, when we played 11 v 11 it was a very strong start. He is a key figure for us in midfield. He played against Liverpool in both of the last two matches from the beginning if I remember it right.

‘He always plays very strong and is super hungry and determined to play these matches. Of course he is in fear now that he will miss it. We will see, we need to wait. Maybe we have a miracle and we make it possible.

‘I didn’t see the challenge live. I was just focused on something else. I saw it from a distance on the iPad. I’m not good at looking at these situations because it hurts me physically to watch it. Everyone told me it is a clear red card.’

Should he miss out, it will come as a massive blow to Chelsea, who are already underdogs against high-flying Liverpool but will be even more so without the Croat.

Paul Pogba replacement? 80m euro Frenkie De Jong to Manchester United ‘95%’ likely to happen

Shocking news has emerged from Barcelona sources that suggests that a move to Manchester United for Blaugrana midfield star Frenkie De Jong is almost complete ahead of the summer transfer window.

De Jong has struggled at times at the Camp Nou since his move from Ajax in 2019, but has still been a mainstay in the midfield of the Catalan club, racking up 30 La Liga appearances this season alone, and having turned out in Claret and Blue a total of 138 times to date.

He may not do so much more, however, if the generally reliable Gerard Romero is to be believed, as the Spanish source claims that

And, while he warns that the situation may still change, he claims that as of mid-May, there is a 95% chance of a deal being struck, with the reasons for the sale apparently solely economic.

‘With a 95% probability, Frenkie De Jong will be transferred to Manchester United. It is a pure economic issue. Barça needs to sell a player who has not been top at the club’, he claims.

‘At the club they are clear that if he continues for one more season and the player does not explode, he will lose value and Barça will lose money’

Any deal would be struck for a fee between 70 and 80 million euros, Romero adds.

A happy reunion?

Should a move go through as it now seems likely to, it would reunite the midfielder with incoming boss Erik ten Hag, under whom the 24-year-old made his name at Ajax. It would also massively add to the quality in the Red Devils’ midfield, with Paul Pogba on his way out leaving just Fred and Scott McTominay as options in the middle of the pitch.

(l-r) Frenkie de Jong of Ajax, Ajax coach Erik ten Hag during the Florida Cup 2019 match between Ajax Amsterdam v Sao Paulo FC at Orlando City Stadium on January 12, 2019 in Orlando, United States(Photo by VI Images via Getty Images)

It would make sense for Barcelona too, with the club in dire need of funds and De Jong one of their most expensive assets. While they would not be happy to lose him, the emergence of Pedri and Gavi in successive seasons has somewhat softened the blow in midfield.

Bringing De Jong to Old Trafford would certainly be a statement signing for Ten Hag.

Ones to Watch | Number 10: Fabio Carvalho; Another Portuguese prodigy

In a football world filled with countless stars of today, so many of us are curious about who is waiting in the wings. That search for that next wonderkid; a youngster that has the potential to make us stand up and marvel at how they are masters of their craft despite their tender age, is always on the minds of millions of fans around the world.

With this in mind, we at 101 Great Goals will be bringing you another weekly series taking a look at players across the world that are 21-years-old or younger. Some of them you will have no doubt heard of, while we hope to bring you a few new names to spark your curiosities every now and then.

Name: Fábio Carvalho

Age: 19-years-old

Position: Attacking Midfield

Place of Birth: Torres Vedras, Portugal

Citizenship: Portugal

National team caps: 0 (capped at U21 level)

Current club: Fulham FC

Current Market Value (per Transfermarkt): €3.5-million

Potential suitor(s): Liverpool

“He’s pretty sensational. He’s the player we’ll look back on and think it was pretty crazy that he ever played in any second tier. He reminds me a bit of Emile Smith Rowe. Carvalho is more about pure efficiency; doing the smartest thing at any given moment. It’s more about the speed of thought and the combination play.” Note: quote via Scouted Football citing Championship pundit Ali Maxwell (Sky & the Athletic).

Fulham has developed a few gifted youngsters in recent years, with names like Ryan Sessegnon and current Liverpool prodigy Harvey Elliot ahead of the class. But Portuguese U21 international Fábio Carvalho could truly be the best of the lot after the Cottagers academy graduate took the Championship by storm this season.

At the time of writing, Carvalho has completed his first full season in the Fulham first team while helping the capital side blitz over 100-goals as they topped the English second division and earned their way back to the Premier League. The Portuguese youth international was at the center of it all for Fulham as well, bagging 10-goals and adding a further 8-assists in 36-appearances while also finding the back of the net in Fulham’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round.

Already hitting City for a goal will undoubtedly go down well with Liverpool fans after every leading indicator shows that Carvalho is Anfield-bound this summer after reports suggest the club will announce the signing in the near future.

Cottagers boss Marco Silva himself confirmed that he arrived at the club too late to influence the youngster in staying another season at Craven Cottage, but could not speak highly enough regarding the wealth of talent that he possesses despite his age.

“I think he has a brilliant career in front of him. He is a top, top talent in my opinion. Unfortunately for me, I probably arrived a little bit late at this football club. With more time, he would have renewed his contract before. Definitely.”

LONDON, ENGLAND – JANUARY 15: Fábio Carvalho of Fulham scores his teams third goal during the Sky Bet Championship match between Fulham and Bristol City at Craven Cottage on January 15, 2022 in London, England. (Photo by Ryan Pierse/Getty Images)

Still capable of being molded how Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp sees fit given the profile of player Carvalho is, there is some discussion regarding just where the Portuguese U21 star will slot in once he presumably arrives on Merseyside in a matter of weeks.

With the Reds set to lose Divock Origi in the summer, that leaves just Brazilian international Roberto Firmino as the only player who truly can play the false nine role in an ideal scenario. Yes, Diogo Jota, Mohammed Salah, and Sadio Mané have all been deployed in that capacity at some stage over the last few seasons, but none has been able to perfectly replicate what Firmino brings to the table for no other reason than the similarity that exists between the Brazilian and Portuguese; both are/were 10’s.

Note: heatmap provided by Sofascore.com

During his successful spell at Bundesliga outfit TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Firmino shone in Sinsheim as a central attacking midfielder; a role that very closely mirrors the tasking of a false nine. In that light, it was far easier for the Brazilian international to adjust his role at Liverpool given the tactical demands that Klopp set to instill at Anfield. Could Carvalho be on the same potential pathway and thus making the business to secure his services all the more clear?

With Salah and Mané the undisputed flanking pair at the club, while Jota, Elliot, and Luis Díaz all plying their trade on the flanks as well while still being on the younger end of the spectrum, logic dictates that Carvalho would not have been purchased to usurp them from their role in the team, but rather, be deployed elsewhere altogether.

Regardless of his age, Fábio Carvalho could be in line for considerable minutes next season at Liverpool and that by itself is encouraging for club supporters in all corners of the world. Though the club is the chief contender against Manchester City’s growing hegemony in England, they still maintain a policy of smart spending that can tackle the demands of both the present as well as the future.

Fábio Carvalho will undoubtedly be a key piece in that future.

Why Tottenham could best Arsenal in race for Raheem Sterling

Reports emerging this week suggest that Tottenham have joined north London rivals Arsenal in the race of Manchester City and England standout, Raheem Sterling.

Arsenal are in need of some fresh legs up front this summer with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang having already left the club in January and Alexandre Lacazette expected to leave for free next month.

And earlier this week it was claimed that Arsenal were ready to explore a deal to sign Raheem Sterling from City this summer:

However, Tottenham are also said to be interested in the winger and, somewhat bizarrely, it is suggested that Spurs actually have the advantage over their city rivals.

This comes with Sterling wanting to play under Antonio Conte, with Tottenham also giving him guarantees about style and position:

On paper, though, guarantees over style and positioning favouring Tottenham seem odd.

This comes with Sterling a natural left-winger and the Lilywhites already having Heung-min Son for that spot.

And, on style specifically, it is fairly obvious that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are much closer stylistically to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City than Tottenham are under Conte.

Klopp on if Fabinho can make the FA Cup final after injury vs Aston Villa

Liverpool faced off with Aston Villa on Tuesday evening, looking to gain some ground on their title rivals, Manchester City.

The Reds headed into the game sat three points behind Pep Guardiola’s side with four worse goal difference, meaning Liverpool needed to win, and win convincingly, vs Villa.

And, whilst Liverpool did pick up the three points on the day, it was not exactly a convincing showing from the Merseysiders.

Aston Villa took the lead moments into the game thanks to some poor defending from the likes of Kostas Tsimikas and Alisson:

However, it did not take long for Liverpool to hit back via Joel Matip who, like Douglas Luiz, benefited from some poor defending on the opposition’s part.

In the end, though, it was Liverpool who emerged with the three points thanks to a 64th-minute header from Sadio Mane.

The win moved Liverpool level on points with Man City, but still 2nd in the league due to goal difference. City play their game in hand on Wednesday.

Klopp on Fabinho

As well as failing to regain top spot in the Premier League, Liverpool also lost Fabinho to injury 30 minutes into the game with what looked to be a hamstring problem.

And, with an FA Cup final this weekend and a Champions League final later this month, Liverpool really cannot afford to have one of their main midfielders out of action for any length of time.

But when speaking after the game on Tuesday, Klopp was asked if Fabinho can make the final on Saturday, to which he said: “I don’t know. He felt the muscle, not too much.”

Klopp was then asked if it is Fabinho’s thigh that is the issue and he said: “No, the other side. He’s quite positive but I’m not sure what I can make of that to be honest.”

Barcelona star Ronaldo Araujo loaded into ambulance during Celta Vigo match after clash of heads with Gavi

Concerning scenes emerged on Tuesday evening during FC Barcelona’s clash with Celta Vigo at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona headed into the game with little left to play for, having already lost the title to Real Madrid and their spot in next season’s Champions League secured.

Nevertheless, Xavi was still no doubt keen to end the season on a high and build momentum heading into his first full campaign as Barcelona boss.

And Barcelona did get off to a great start, with Memphis Depay scoring the opening goal 30 minutes in before a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brace either side of the break saw La Blaugrana take a 3-0 lead.

Iago Aspas did pull one back 50 minutes in, but any hope of a comeback was ended when Jeison Murillo was shown a red card shortly before the hour mark.

It was not all positives for Barcelona on Tuesday, though, with concerning scenes midway through the second half seeing Ronald Araujo loaded into an ambulance on the pitch after a clash of heads with teammate Gavi:
