Paul Scholes has lauded Antony’s performance yesterday, as Manchester United secured a 2-0 win against Everton at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian put in a fine performance and showed another side to his game, which did not go unnoticed by the treble-winner.

“I used to think of him as a one-trick pony,” said Scholes on BT Sport. “I think that was the best game I’ve seen him play for Manchester United today.”

There are unlikely to be many arguments there. The Brazilian has often come in for criticism despite his wonderful few goals and excellent work rate.

At times, his lack of willingness to take on his fullback have caused frustrations, while his refusal to use his right foot in any capacity has been a cause for concern.

Antony has been called out as too predictable this season, and Scholes’ ‘one-trick pony’ comment directly refers to that criticism.

But the Brazil international was more than happy to mix it up yesterday, regularly skinning a bewildered Ben Godffrey to drive into the box.

But for Jordan Pickford’s heroics, Antony could easily have scored two or three goals to go with his fine display.

Scholes also hailed the return of Anthony Martial to the Manchester United squad, with the Frenchman having scored after an injury layoff.

“It’s great to have him back, we all know the quality he has got but he has to stay fit,” Scholes said. “He hasn’t got a good record fitness-wise. If he’s playing in this team he’s scoring 20-25 goals.”

Martial did indeed put in a fine performance in his half-hour on the pitch and demonstrated exactly how valuable he can be to this Man United squad.

With the Red Devils’ season approaching its crescendo, Ten Hag will certainly be hoping that his number nine can put his fitness woes behind him.
