US investors realized 6X more crypto gains in 2021 than next country

Crypto investors from the United States realized crypto gains nearly six times higher in total than the UK, the second highest country in terms of realized gains.

According to a report by Chainalysis, crypto investors in the US accrued a record $46.9 billion in realized gains throughout 2021, leading the rest of the world by a wide margin. The US is followed at quite some distance by the UK at $8.1 billion and Germany on $5.8 billion.

Total realized cryptocurrency gains 2021: Chainalysis.

The report comes as global cryptocurrency adoption continues to gain widespread traction. The US witnessed a massive increase in adoption and realized gains, with the total estimated gains for 2021 up 476% from $8.1 billion the year before.

Special mentions were given to countries that outperformed their “traditional” economic rankings. Despite Turkey being globally ranked as number 11 by GDP, the country was ranked at number six when it came to realized crypto gains.

China was one of the only large nations that did not see the same massive gains as other countries. In 2021, China’s total estimated realized cryptocurrency gains stood at $5.1 billion, up from $1.7 billion in 2020, which equates to year-over-year growth rate of 194%. However, this is still impressive growth considering the extensive crypto bans that were progressively enacted in China in 2021.

China’s result pales however besides other countries such as the UK and Germany which saw a respective 431% and a 423% increase last year.

Another notable trend was the increase in total gains from Ethereum (ETH), which saw ETH investors around the world cash out a total $76.3 billion, beating out Bitcoin (BTC) as the highest realized earnings crypto asset in 2021. Bitcoin inventors still performed well however, with the global crypto investing community securing $74.7 billion in gains throughout 2021.

A$AP Rocky released from jail after posting USD 550,000 bail bond: Reports

A$AP Rocky has been released from jail following his arrest at LAX airport. The rapper’s release was confirmed by the Los Angeles Police Department as reported by Entertainment Tonight.

During his return from the same, the rapper was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport at 8:20 am on Wednesday morning. Rocky was released after posting a bail bond of USD 555, 000. Following his arrest, he was reportedly investigated by the Homicide division.

According to Entertainment Tonight, a court date has been set for Rocky on August 17 at the LAX Superior Courthouse.  Reports also suggest that following his arrest, the LAPD carried out a search warrant of the rapper’s Los Angeles home. Opinion | 10 Americans Discuss the Ukraine War

Kristen Soltis Anderson: Is there anything in particular that you have seen, read, or heard about the war that has stayed with you and stuck in your memory? James?

James: With Putin being the bully that he is, I think it was kind of allowed. I don’t see the United Nations carrying their weight in this issue. I’m ex-military as well. And I don’t see them stepping to the plate. The players that are supposed to play with this guy, Putin, they’re standing down, for some reason.

Aleeta: I listen to N.P.R. And they mentioned that so far it’s been 183 children who have been killed and that they are attacking orphanages and maternity wards. I think that kind of just completely obliterated my faith in humanity.

Yara Bayoumy: Based on what you’ve seen, read, or heard, why do you think this war is happening?

Nick: Putin saw Ukraine as some sort of threat in their border relations. And that’s why they decided to get involved, because they didn’t want to kind of stand back any longer. Something that I read or heard, I just saw a video clip of a missile strike and, yeah, just the damage that it caused. And I play video games occasionally with my friends. And we have these war games that a lot of the youth are a part of. And they don’t really take it very seriously. But that just really opened my eyes to, wow, these are really big problems in the world. People are dying. Destruction’s happening. And we’re just kind of sitting back, so.

Karina: Honestly, I think a lot of it has to do with just Putin and his ego. I think he wants to conquer another country. And I think he surrounds himself with people that let him keep thinking that about himself. He’s a madman.

Kristen Soltis Anderson: Kieran?

Kieran: From what I understand, it’s basically about control and power and how Putin wants to regain Ukraine once again as part of Russian territory, so he can do whatever he wants to keep the borders safe, keep them away from NATO, the U.N.

Charles: Putin feels that one of the worst things that’s happened in the last 30 years was the dissolution of the Soviet Union. And he’s trying to regather all of those satellite nations back into the fold of Russia again. How could we allow this to happen? Well, you turn it around and say, well, what could we have done to stop it? And there’s not a lot of answers that I can see that wouldn’t be just as destructive. This is a problem you have any place where you have one person get too much power and influence.

Plane Carrying Army Parachutists Briefly Alarms Capitol

WASHINGTON — A plane carrying members of the Army’s Golden Knights parachute team was taking part in a celebration of the armed forces at Nationals Park on Wednesday evening.

But it also sparked alarm and a rushed evacuation of the Capitol — and then an angry condemnation from Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who accused federal aviation officials of failing to inform the complex’s security officials of a plane circling worryingly close.

“The Federal Aviation Administration’s apparent failure to notify Capitol Police of the preplanned flyover” of Nationals Stadium “is outrageous and inexcusable,” Ms. Pelosi said in a statement. “The unnecessary panic caused by this apparent negligence was particularly harmful for members, staff and institutional workers still grappling with the trauma of the attack on their workplace on Jan. 6.”

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., alarm surged through Capitol Hill as lawmakers and staff received an urgent message from the U.S. Capitol Police: “Evacuate now: Aircraft intrusion.” The alert said officers were tracking an “aircraft that poses a probable threat to the Capitol complex.”

Aides panicked, furiously texting to find out what was happening.

But less than 20 minutes later, lawmakers received a follow-up alert: “The aircraft no longer poses a threat to the Capitol complex and the U.S.C.P. is now preparing buildings for re-entry.”

The panicked evacuation showed the extent to which the Capitol remains on edge after an attack by a pro-Trump mob on Jan. 6, 2021, left more than 150 police officers injured and several people dead — and how communication breakdowns between the Capitol Police and other federal agencies, which contributed to the chaos on Jan. 6, still dog the department. While most lawmakers were out of Washington in the middle of a two-week recess, some staff members were working in the building.

The Capitol Police ordered nearly a dozen buildings cleared, including the visitor center, office buildings and the Library of Congress.

Ms. Pelosi praised the police force for ordering the evacuation and “vigilantly monitoring for a potential aircraft threat.”

“Our officers ensured the safety of all who work in these hallowed halls — and we thank them for their exemplary service,” she said.

She vowed to conduct a “thorough after-action review that determines what precisely went wrong today and who at the Federal Aviation Administration will be held accountable for this outrageous and frightening mistake.”

The Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement that it would review the events, adding that “we know our actions affect others, especially in our nation’s capital region, and we must communicate early and often with our law enforcement partners.”

The Defense Department declined to comment.

Notification of the false alarm was met with relief on Capitol Hill, but also anger and frustration.

“Would love to have whoever is responsible for this to explain why the miscommunication occurred directly to my mother, who texted to ask if I was safe,” Aaron Fritschner, the deputy chief of staff to Representative Donald S. Beyer Jr., Democrat of Virginia, wrote on Twitter.

The Capitol Police are traditionally informed of any event in the area involving aircraft, given tight regulations on Washington airspace. Similar incidents have happened in the past, including in 2004, when a plane carrying Gov. Ernie Fletcher of Kentucky to former President Ronald Reagan’s funeral was mistaken for a threat and prompted a hasty evacuation of the complex.

As Capitol officials were expressing their anger and frustration on Wednesday, the pregame festivities were getting underway for military appreciation night at the Washington Nationals’ game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Golden Knights landed one by one in the outfield with their bright golden parachutes flowing in the wind.

“Let’s make some noise!” an announcer said, to welcome the six parachutists. “May all your days be prosperous and your nights golden!”

He did not mention the panicked evacuation a mile away.

Derivatives exchange dYdX to become ‘100% decentralized by EOY’

Ethereum Layer 2-based crypto derivatives trading platform dYdX has vowed to become “100% decentralized by EOY” via the protocol’s V4 update.

dYdX primarily offers perpetual contracts, which are derivatives products that borrow elements from both spot margin trading and futures trading but do not have an expiry date.

At present only certain components of dYdX are decentralized, including its Ethereum smart contracts, governance and staking. However its “orderbook and matching engine” are managed by dYdX Trading Inc. — the team that developed the platform.

dYdX announced the V4 update on Twitter yesterday with a new roadmap outlining that: “You are not ready.”

In a blog dYdX explained that the “primary aspect” of fully decentralizing the platform is focused on the orderbook and its matching engine. The team noted that the main challenges will be scaling throughput (transaction processing power), finality (off-chain trade matching) and fairness (operators not being able to extract value from legitimate trading activity) in a decentralized manner.

“With V4, dYdX will become fully decentralized. There will no longer be central points of control or failure of the protocol; all aspects of the protocol that can be controlled will be fully controlled by the community,” the roadmap reads.

Outlining why the platform is going fully decentralized, dYdX emphasized the “fundamental improvement” that decentralized finance (DeFi) provides over centralized financial services:

“DeFi offers a massive improvement in transparency. For the first time, the financial system itself is no longer a black box to users. With DeFi, users can trust code instead of corporations.”

The V4 update will see dYdX Trading Inc. receive zero trading fees moving forward. Additionally, the platform will also roll out more products and services, such as synthetics and spot and margin trading.

While many DeFi projects often tout that they are “decentralized” due to smart contracts and their automated setups, they are often controlled by a small core team with access to a multisig admin key that gives them ‘god mode’ powers over the protocol. This is often a useful strategy to recover from errors while building the platform, but introduces centralized risks.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Gary Gensler argued that DeFi is mostly centralized during an interview in August last year, noting that:

“These so-called ‘decentralized finance’ platforms actually have a lot of centralization. There’s a group of entrepreneurs that are running these platforms.”

Another DeFi project to announce the move to full decentralization, or being “fully self-sufficient” was DAI stablecoin creator and pioneering protocol MakerDAO in mid-2021.

Related: DeFi token AAVE eyes 40% rally in May but ‘bull trap’ risks remain

Maker Foundation CEO Rune Christensen noted in a blog post at the time that “the Protocol and the DAO will be determined by thousands or perhaps millions of engaged, enthusiastic community members.”

Critics note however that MakerDAO has 5.1 billion centralized USDC stablecoins backing its DAI reserves so the true extent of its decentralization is arguable.

Macron and Le Pen Trade Punches in Pivotal French Election Debate

“The Yellow Vests told you they wanted more democracy and they were not heard,” she said. “I think the biggest problem at the end of these five years is the disunion, the division, that you have caused among the French people, the feeling of contempt they have, the feeling of not being listened to, of not being heard, of not being consulted.”

Now was the time, she added, “to stitch French democracy together” again.

How Ms. Le Pen would do this through a political program certain to antagonize France’s more than six million Muslims, as well as many foreigners living in France, is unclear. While she insisted she had nothing against Islam as a religion, she said that an Islamist ideology was “attacking the foundations of our Republic.”

One of the most pointed clashes came on the issue of Muslim head scarves. Ms. Le Pen, who wants to bar women from wearing them in public, called head scarves “a uniform imposed by Islamists” that undermined French values of secularism and gender equality.

“All of these women need to be freed,” she said.

Mr. Macron shot back that banning head scarves was an unworkable proposal that would fuel “civil war,” that conflated Islam and extremism, and that dishonored France’s values of tolerance.

He referred to Latifa Ibn Ziaten, the Muslim mother of a victim of the 2012 terrorist shootings in Toulouse, who became an activist for youth outreach and interreligious dialogue after her son’s death. The attacks killed three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school, as well as French army soldiers including her son, Imad Ibn Ziaten.

“You want to pull off her head scarf?” Mr. Macron said. “That’s what you are proposing, very concretely.”

Repeated Islamist terrorist attacks in France, most recently the beheading in 2020 of a schoolteacher who had shown a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad in a lesson on freedom of expression, have contributed to the sharp ideological divisions afflicting the country and the rise of the anti-immigrant extreme right.

Tesla’s Profits Jumped in the First Quarter but Challenges Loom

Tesla said on Wednesday that it made a $3.3 billion profit in the first three months of the year, up from $438 million a year earlier and the biggest quarterly profit since the company’s creation. But Tesla also said it expected its factories to run below capacity for the rest of 2022.

The electric carmaker said its revenue in the first quarter totaled $18.8 billion, up from $10.4 billion a year earlier. The profit significantly exceeded investor expectations.

Tesla was the fastest-growing major carmaker last year, nearly doubling sales to almost one million vehicles while the industry as a whole slumped. New factories near Austin, Texas, and Berlin position the company to repeat that growth this year — if it can overcome some serious challenges.

These include a semiconductor shortage that has plagued automakers for more than a year. Tesla has also had to shut down its factory in Shanghai because of China’s draconian attempts to contain the coronavirus. China accounted for one-quarter of Tesla sales last year, and the plant in Shanghai also exports cars to other countries in Asia and Europe.

Tesla said on Wednesday that it had resumed “limited production” in Shanghai after a three-week shutdown. But it warned that it continued to face “persistent” supply-chain problems as well as rising costs for raw materials.

“Our own factories have been running below capacity for several quarters as supply chain became the main limiting factor, which is likely to continue through the rest of 2022,” Tesla said in a statement.

Tesla’s chief executive, Elon Musk, said on a conference call with investors and analysts on Wednesday that his “best guess” was that Tesla would produce 1.5 million cars this year, meeting the company’s goal of achieving sales growth of 50 percent a year.

Analysts are worried that supply-chain and production problems, which Tesla did a better job of avoiding last year than other automakers did, could hamper the company’s growth this year.

“A robust demand story for Tesla is being overshadowed by brutal production issues in China as well as a Rubik’s cube supply chain, which continues to haunt Tesla as well as the rest of the auto/tech industry,” analysts at Wedbush Securities said in a note to clients ahead of Tesla’s first-quarter earnings announcement.

Mr. Musk said soaring prices for lithium were forcing the company to raise prices, potentially slowing the pace at which people switch to electric vehicles. Some lithium producers are enjoying 90 percent profit margins, he added.

“Can more people please get into the lithium business?” he said. “Do you like minting money? Then the lithium business is for you.”

Mr. Musk hinted that Tesla could get more involved in the supply chain for raw materials but did not say whether it would expand into mining metals like lithium directly. “We are looking at all the raw materials and looking carefully,” he said. “We think we will have some exciting announcements in the months to come.”

Tesla remains the largest manufacturer of battery-powered cars by far. During the first three months of 2022, it sold 310,000 vehicles, an increase of almost 70 percent from a year earlier. But traditional automakers like Volkswagen, Ford Motor and Hyundai Motor have woken up to the threat and begun selling models that challenge Tesla’s dominance.

There is also a risk that Mr. Musk could alienate some car buyers with his high-profile offer to buy Twitter. Some potential customers may applaud Mr. Musk as a champion of free speech, but others may fear he will open up Twitter to hate speech and misinformation.

Mr. Musk did not discuss and was not asked about his proposed acquisition of Twitter on the call.
