Arsenal transfer latest: N’Golo Kante & Edon Zhegrova

Updates on the ongoing efforts of Premier League giants Arsenal to reinforce the club’s squad ahead of the 2022/23 campaign have been provided on Sunday.

The transfer team at the Emirates, of course, have been hard at work across the summer to date.

Evidently keen to build on their climb to 5th in the Premier League last time out, the Gunners have already secured a quartet of fresh faces, in the form of Matt Turner, Marquinhos, Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Jesus.

With the likes of Tottenham and Chelsea continuing to strengthen around them, though, Edu Gaspar and co. are understood to be pushing hard for yet further additions to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

A left-sided defender, central midfielder and attacker are all still on the wishlist of the powers that be on the red half of north London.

And now, as alluded to above, an insight into the latest on two such players tipped to take their talents to Arsenal before the summer is out has been provided.

The players in question? Edon Zhegrova and N’Golo Kante.

Lille winger Zhegrova has been widely reported as a backup target to reinforce the attacking ranks at the Emirates, on the back of the club’s failed pursuit of Leeds United standout Raphinha.

Links with Chelsea mainstay Kante, meanwhile, first surfaced this weekend, amid the suggestion that Arsenal could look to take advantage of the Frenchman’s precarious contract situation.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, however, has moved to play down such links.

On Sunday, the Italian has revealed that, contrary to prior reports, the Gunners have not tabled an offer for Zhegrova, whilst negotiations, at present, are not taking place over Kante’s potential signing, either.

Stephen Bannon Agrees to Testify to Jan. 6 Panel

WASHINGTON — With his criminal trial for contempt of Congress approaching, Stephen K. Bannon, an ally of former President Donald J. Trump’s who was involved in his plans to overturn the 2020 election, has informed the House committee investigating the Capitol attack that he is now willing to testify, according to two letters obtained by The New York Times.

His decision is a remarkable about-face for Mr. Bannon, who until Saturday had been among the most obstinate and defiant of the committee’s potential witnesses. He had promised to turn the criminal case against him into the “misdemeanor from hell” for the Justice Department.

But with the possibility of two years in jail and large fines looming on the horizon, Mr. Bannon has been authorized to testify by Mr. Trump, his lawyer told the committee late on Saturday in a letter, which was reported earlier by The Guardian.

The former president had previously instructed Mr. Bannon and other associates not to cooperate with the panel, claiming that executive privilege — a president’s power to withhold certain internal executive branch information, especially confidential communications involving him or his top aides — compelled them to stay silent. But in recent days, as several witnesses have come forward to offer the House panel damning testimony about his conduct, Mr. Trump has grown frustrated that one of his fiercest defenders has not yet appeared before the committee, people close to him said.

“Mr. Bannon is willing to, and indeed prefers, to testify at your public hearing,” Robert J. Costello, Mr. Bannon’s lawyer, wrote to Representative Bennie Thompson, Democrat of Mississippi and the chairman of the committee.

Mr. Costello said that Mr. Bannon’s decision to comply with the committee’s subpoena came after he was cleared to testify by Mr. Trump. He provided the panel with a letter that Mr. Trump sent to Mr. Bannon on Saturday that waived any claim to executive privilege over his testimony or documents relevant to the subpoena.

“Our position about the committee remains unchanged, but President Trump wants Mr. Bannon to tell the committee the truth,” Mr. Costello said on Sunday. He said Mr. Bannon planned to supply the committee with documents as well as testimony.

The committee and the Justice Department have long maintained that Mr. Trump has no valid claim of executive privilege over Mr. Bannon’s testimony, in part because Mr. Bannon left the White House in 2017 and was a private citizen when he was involved in Mr. Trump’s efforts to hold on to power after the 2020 election.

“When you first received the subpoena to testify and provide documents, I invoked executive privilege,” Mr. Trump wrote in his letter to Mr. Bannon on Saturday. “However, I watched how unfairly you and others have been treated, having to spend vast amounts of money on legal fees and all of the trauma you must be going through for the love of your country and out of respect for the office of the president.”

“Therefore,” he continued, “if you reach an agreement on a time and place for your testimony, I will waive executive privilege for you, which allows for you to go in and testify truthfully and fairly, as per the request of the unselect committee of political thugs and hacks.”

Mr. Bannon’s trial on two counts of criminal contempt of Congress is set for July 18. Each count carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $100,000 fine.

It remains to be seen how Mr. Bannon’s new posture will affect the criminal proceeding, and how forthcoming he will be. He could refuse to speak about certain topics, citing his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination, as some other witnesses have done. But the committee has repeatedly said that it needs to hear from Mr. Bannon and receive the documents it requested from him about plans to overturn the 2020 election.

“We got the letter around midnight from his lawyer saying that he would testify, and we have wanted him to testify,” Representative Zoe Lofgren, Democrat of California and a member of the committee, told CNN on Sunday. “So the committee, of course, has not yet had a chance to discuss it, but I expect that we will be hearing from him. And there are many questions that we have for him.”

Should Mr. Bannon ultimately appear for an interview, he would give his testimony behind closed doors like hundreds of other witnesses have done, Ms. Lofgren said. The committee has carefully choreographed its public hearings to make a streamlined presentation of its case, and has worked to avoid public sparring sessions with witnesses.

For months, Mr. Bannon has been perhaps the most bombastic and strident potential witness the committee has called to testify. He refused to turn over a single document or sit for a minute of testimony. For his intransigence, the House voted in October to hold Mr. Bannon in criminal contempt of Congress.

But the panel has insisted that Mr. Bannon, Mr. Trump’s former chief strategist and counselor, could help investigators better understand the Jan. 6, 2021, attack, which was meant to stop the certification of President Biden’s victory.

On his radio show on Jan. 5, 2021, Mr. Bannon promised that “all hell is going to break loose tomorrow,” a statement that shows he “had some foreknowledge about extreme events that would occur the next day,” the committee said in a report.

Investigators have also pointed to a conversation Mr. Bannon had with Mr. Trump on Dec. 30, 2020, in which he urged him to focus his efforts on Jan. 6, the day that Congress was to make the official count of electoral votes to confirm Mr. Biden’s victory. Mr. Bannon was also present at a meeting at the Willard Hotel in Washington the day before the violence, when plans were discussed to try to overturn the results of the election the following day.

Mr. Bannon’s criminal case is just the latest against him.

Federal prosecutors indicted and arrested him in 2020 in Manhattan on charges related to money raised to promote the construction of the border wall long sought by Mr. Trump. But before facing trial, he was pre-emptively pardoned by Mr. Trump hours before the former president left office.

Married At First Sight‘s Noi Phommasak and Steve Moy Split

“When I said yes on decision day, I knew that our relationship was far from perfect, but I held the belief that with enough time, effort and understanding, we could overcome the challenges we faced, and build a healthy, functioning relationship,” he wrote in part. “Over time I lost hope that this could happen and believe we are incompatible in ways that attempts at compromise can’t seem to fix or overcome.”

While he admitted that the pair have “been apart for awhile now,” Steve shared that a part of him was “still holding out for the potential for true change” in their relationship, but that “this surprise announcement is a signal that it’s definitely time to let go.”

Steve also expressed his fear of “letting people down” by revealing that they had split and shared his well-wishes for Noi going forward.

“Noi, I’ll always love you. I so wish we were a better fit,” he wrote. “I wish we could meet each other’s needs without feeling like we have to compromise ourselves to a point beyond what we consider acceptable. I wish that our willingness to be flexible to each other matched the chemistry we were lucky to have.”

As for how he’s feeling? “I’m doing my best to stay positive, and am lucky to have an amazing group of people around me that have been holding me up through all of this,” he wrote. “Of course I hold some negative feelings about it all, but I’m trying to process them on my own time, and with people who I can count on, while trying not to let it bleed out in public.”

He added, “I’ve given so much of myself to this marriage, the process and this experience as a whole. I don’t regret anything I’ve given, but it’s time that we start doing what’s best for ourselves.”

Last month, Steve shared in another Instagram post that the couple was finding it difficult to “navigate the challenges we face in our private relationship, while recently becoming public on social media, having many people invested and wanting details.”

He added, “We have been choosing not to share some things while we work through, and figure things out, while at the same time recognizing that it’s expected for some people to want to know more.”

Jesuits in moment of silence in Mexico for murdered priests

MEXICO CITY — The Roman Catholic Church began a special round of prayers for peace in Mexico on Sunday after two Jesuit priests and a tour guide were slain June 20.

Jesuits held a moment of silence for the priests, who were alledgedly killed by a local drug gang leader as they tried to protect the guide.

Dozens gathered at the downtown monument known as the Stella of Light for the moment of silence.

The Jesuits said they won’t be intimidated into leaving the Tarahumara mountains, where the order has ministered to the Rarámuri Indigenous community for centuries. Two priests have already been assigned to replace their fallen brothers, said the Rev. Jorge Atilano González.

“Today we are starting a cycle of prayers for peace at the national level. It is the opening of a month marking the memory of all the people killed and disappeared. Today we are remembering the priests, the journalists, the social activists and the young people who have died violently,” González told the gathering.

So far this year, 12 journalists have been killed in Mexico, making it the most dangerous country for journalists outside a war zone.

The church’s Catholic Multimedia Center said seven priests have been slain under the current administration, which took office in December 2018, and at least two dozen in the six years of the previous president.

But many more average citizens have been killed in gang-fueled violence.

“The over 100,000 disappeared and the 122,000 killed during this administration is a source of pain, of strength, of anger and courage to build justice, reconcilation and peace,” González said.

The murdered priests, the Rev. Javier Campos, 79, and the Rev. Joaquín Mora, 80, had spent much of their lives serving the Indigenous peoples of the Sierra Tarahumara mountains. The Jesuits were shot to death in the small church in the town of Cerocahui.

The bishops’ council also called on the faithful to pray on July 31 for the conversion or redemption of the killers.

“What we are asking for as Jesuits is peace in the Sierra Tarahumara, safety for the Rarámuri communities, as well as for the religious community,” González said.

“We are also asking for justice, for strengthening local institutions,” like police forces, he said. “It is not going to be enough to have the presence of the army and the National Guard. We need stronger local institutions.”

Aaron Rodgers could lose man bun if bet with Charles Barkley goes wrong

Aaron Rodgers put his man bun on the line in a bet with Charles Barkley at the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament.

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is a sight to behold on the football field. But when he takes his helmet off, his man bun is not.

Charles Barkley has been a vocal critic of the QB’s chosen hairstyle. Now he’s got a chance to do something about it.

He just has to beat Rodgers on the links, according to USA Today.

Aaron Rodgers could lose man bun if bet with Charles Barkley goes wrong

The bet is simple. Barkley has to finish higher than Rodgers in the tournament at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Nevada. Then the sports world will be rid of the infamous Rodgers man bun.

The rub? Barkley is notoriously bad at golf while Rodgers is pretty good. Last year, the Packers QB finished in the Top 20, just has he has each of the last five years. Barkley, meanwhile, finished 76th in 2021. That was one of his better finishes.

If he loses, Barkley will have to donate $25,000 to the North Valley Community Foundation, Rodger’s charity of choice.

Fortunately for the foundation and unfortunately for those who want to see Rodgers get a haircut already, it seems almost certain the money will be donated and the man bun will remain.

Barkley definitely seems to accept that fact.

“Just because you’re too cheap to cut your hair, you can’t make it a style. Man, here’s $25. Go down to Fantastic Sam’s and get that thing cut off the back of your head. Just because you don’t cut your hair, that’s not a style,” Barkley said during a promotion event for the tournament. “But Aaron’s a much better golfer than me, but I’ll be happy to give a donation to his charity.”

Lamar Jackson’s first move in negotiations is hilarious

Lamar Jackson’s latest “move” in Baltimore Ravens contract negotiations is a hilarious one.

The Baltimore Ravens are going to have to pay up to keep Lamar Jackson beyond this season, but how high are they willing to go to keep him on their payroll?

Jackson is famously self-represented. While he has allowed the CBA and his No. 32 overall draft slot do the heavy lifting for him, Jackson is playing a dangerous game by entering year five on an expiring contract. In the weeks leading up to his fifth professional training camp, Jackson changed his Twitter header to “I Need $”. It is a reference to the cinematic masterpiece known as How High.

Of course, Jackson went on to tell USA TODAY Sports he does not see what the big issue is here.

“I don’t know why people are blowing it up,” said Jackson to USA TODAY Sports. “I just saw Bleacher Report post it. They just take anything that’s posted on social media and just blow it up, and try to think for you. I don’t take it too seriously.”

Jackson may be a big fan of How High, but he does not like people insinuating about his business.

“They’re making it seem like I’m talking to the Ravens when I’m not. Our contract discussion is going on already. But it ain’t about that, though. I’m not putting my business life on social media. I won’t ever do that. I won’t put my personal life on social media. I’ll show stuff, but I won’t throw subliminal [messages] out. That’s not me.”

Regardless, Jackson is hopeful he will have a new deal with Baltimore before training camp begins.

Here is what Jackson’s Twitter header looks like to honor the iconic movie character, I Need Money.

Lamar Jackson’s negotiating tactics for a new Baltimore Ravens deal: How High?

Let’s be real. Jackson holds all the leverage in this situation, because what are the Ravens going to do otherwise? If they cannot agree to a long-term extension with their franchise quarterback, guess who becomes a free agent in the new league year? No matter how Jackson plays this NFL season, Baltimore will not be in a great position to think about even drafting a potential successor.

Furthermore, Baltimore has never had a signal-caller as talented as Jackson. While it remains to be seen if he can truly play from behind and win multiple playoff games in a row with his arm, Jackson keeps the Ravens relevant every single year. Of course, waiting until seemingly deadline day to strike up a deal is not all that advantageous for both parties. Something has to give here.

Regardless, Baltimore has a division crown to win. Though the Cincinnati Bengals certainly played well enough to win Super Bowl 56, they did not get it done. While the Cleveland Browns traded for Deshaun Watson, they have had yet another chaotic offseason as an organization. As far as the Pittsburgh Steelers are concerned, they no longer have Ben Roethlisberger playing quarterback.

How high the Ravens will fly this year will be almost entirely on how well Jackson plays for them.

Opinion | A Ruling From Outside the Court: ‘Shame’ on the Justices

To the Editor:

When I practiced law, I always believed that the Supreme Court, as the highest court in the land, provided a safety net to protect the basic rights of the poor and the downtrodden in our society.

Many of the recent opinions of the court have turned the safety net into a noose, choking the life out of the rights of women, minorities, etc.

The ultraconservative justices on the court make a mockery of the rule of law to serve their political agenda. Shame on them. The American people deserve better.

Shel Seligsohn
Philadelphia

To the Editor:

Picking and choosing among the expressed purposes of the Constitution, the Supreme Court majority consistently dismisses the public welfare and undoes a more perfect union, all in the name of the blessings of (anarchic) liberty.

Douglas McIlroy
Etna, N.H.

To the Editor:

Please don’t call the activist members of Supreme Court conservatives.

Conservatives respect the rules by which government works. They respect precedent. They address issues that come to them, rather than finding excuses for radical change. They don’t dissemble to Congress. They don’t hide their past actions.

They have the integrity not to take something of value (a seat on the court) that they know was stolen. They recuse themselves when appropriate.

These are not conservatives. They are reactionaries.

Chava Casper
Teaneck, N.J.

To the Editor:

That the Supreme Court consists of lawyers is bad enough, but in the last month the court’s conservative majority has flaunted its astounding expertise as historians, linguists, obstetricians and climatologists. With every ruling they assume a new profession.

Chief Justice John Roberts once famously said, “It’s my job to call balls and strikes, and not to pitch or bat.” But is there any arena left in which he and his universally expert colleagues have not inserted themselves as hitter as well as umpire, as player and coach as much as referee?

Re “The Young Women Who Fight Abortion Rights” (front page, July 3):

As a high-risk labor and delivery nurse, I found the views expressed by these young women to be deeply disturbing. Even healthy young people risk morbidity and mortality as a direct result of pregnancy. To force people to carry unwanted pregnancies, even with emotional and financial support, is traumatic; to make them lose their lives and livelihoods because of complications of involuntary childbirth is inhumane.

There is no feminist perspective that includes forcing a person to endure permanent organ damage, disability or death. I have seen women die on operating room tables and in birthing suites. And more will die because of the actions of Kristin Turner, an anti-abortion activist, and people like her.

Meghan Thompson-Wilda
Chicago

To the Editor:

Oh these young women who have the luxury to be anti-choice, even anti-contraception. They didn’t live in the before times. They didn’t battle for the right to control our own bodies. They didn’t escort women through the yelling mob at clinics.

And their optimism that somehow the country will provide resources for women forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term! Wow. Well, I hope they don’t learn the hard way what it’s like to not have control over one’s fertility. But I fear they will.

Re “Living in Fear of a Concealed Gun,” by Patti Davis (Opinion guest essay, July 6):

Thank you, Patti, for your words. I am an American who is sickened by the violence that our nation experiences on a routine basis. We have normalized it, and our political leaders can only send out “thoughts and prayers” to the victim’s families.

What is wrong with us as a people that we can’t ban AR-15s? Writers of the Constitution never had this weapon in mind for self-defense.

I applaud all who have worked tirelessly after Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland — the list goes on. I am an ordinary citizen who wants to do more to ban this weapon of mass destruction. I am on your team, Patti! Tell me how I can do more.

Re “Compiling a Dictionary Is Hard Yakka … Er, Work” (news article, June 20):

The documentation of Australian slang is a “ridgy-didge” (honest) attempt, but it’s probably too late. Some of the rural areas may still use colloquialisms occasionally, but most suburban areas are now too multicultural for their use and they are now heard mainly on Australian soap operas.

What we are now facing is not just the loss of these expressions but also the “Americanization” of our language and accent as a result of our TV viewing, with the main transgression being the pronunciation of Z going from “zed” to “zee.”

Language is becoming more universal and accents are blurring, and if we all communicate more it should be a better world.
