India's economy is expected to maintain growth around 7% over the forecast horizon, according to a Reuters poll of economists published Tuesday, even as momentum moderates from a stronger start to the fiscal year.
That would remain a comparatively rapid pace for a major economy. The outlook is nevertheless complicated by higher energy costs, which can feed into transport, manufacturing and household expenses in a country that imports much of its crude oil.
Growth does not answer every question
Headline GDP is an important measure, but it does not by itself show how gains are distributed or whether enough stable jobs are being created. The Reuters report notes continuing concern about employment prospects, particularly for younger people.
For households, inflation and wage growth may feel more immediate than the national growth rate. For policymakers, the challenge is to sustain investment while containing price pressure and improving job creation.
What to watch
Future inflation releases, energy-price movements and official GDP data will show whether the current balance changes. Polls aggregate informed forecasts; they are not guarantees of the eventual figures.
