Latest Patrick Mahomes update will make Chiefs fans uneasy
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is still dealing with the ankle injury that hobbled him during Kansas City’s Super Bowl run.
It’s been two months since the Chiefs bested the Eagles in Super Bolw LVII with Patrick Mahomes leading the way despite a battered ankle.
Fans might have assumed that the quarterback would be fully healed from the high ankle sprain eight weeks on from the Super Bowl and ten weeks from when he first suffered the injury.
They would be wrong.
Patrick Mahomes is not fully recovered from ankle injury
On Monday, Mahomes told reporters on a video call that he’s not 100 percent on the ankle yet.
“I wouldn’t say I’m 100%, but I have had no limitations,” Mahomes said. “When you go through the grind of a week of training, and you’re trying to push it and go through the rehab process, but at the same time, you want to make sure you’re still building, you might be a little sore on the weekends, but I think we’ve done a great job of pushing it to the right limit to where now, I’m throwing and stuff like that and having no limitations there.”
While Mahomes has no limitations throwing, he is still working to regain his full mobility when it comes to things like running and cutting.
The good news is Mahomes has been holding workouts in Texas, so the ankle isn’t stopping his offseason preparations as he looks to defend an MVP and Super Bowl title. However, the fact that its still bugging him this far out raises some amount of concern. Playing through injuries can have long term consequences and Mahomes certainly played through that one, aggravating it badly enough during the Super Bowl to miss a drive.
For now, the Chiefs have no reason to think Mahomes will be hampered by the time the 2023 season arrives. The ankle is just something to keep an eye on.
