Remarkable Eagles stat plays major role in undefeated start

The Philadelphia Eagles remain the only undefeated team in the NFL, and this remarkable stat has played a big role in their success.

The Philadelphia Eagles are 7-0 for only the second time in franchise history.

The team’s last 7-0 start came in 2004 and, led by Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens, they made it to the Super Bowl. This year’s team has been dominant.

The Eagles are scoring the third-most points per game in the NFL (28.0), while allowing the fourth-fewest points per game (16.9). However, one statistic captures how historically well the Eagles are playing.

The Eagles are protecting the football at a historic rate

According to Josh Tolentino of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia is just the second NFL team since at least 1940 to have only two turnovers through seven games. Furthermore, they have not lost a single fumble this season.

The Eagles have a commanding lead in the turnover category this season. The Las Vegas Raiders have the second-fewest turnovers with six. Meanwhile, 18 teams have already reached double-digit turnovers.

The only two turnovers the team has this season were both interceptions. However, looking at each turnover individually makes this statistic even more impressive, as both interceptions were tipped. On this first play, Jalen Hurts throws an accurate pass to Kenneth Gainwell, but the ball bounces off Gainwell’s hands directly to Jordan Hicks.

On this play, the pass is deflected in the air, and it is caught by Andre Cisco.

If the Eagles continue to protect the football at this rate, they will be extremely difficult to beat.
