Phil Foden named PFA Player of the Year

Phil Foden has been named the PFA Player of the Year for 2024.

Foden’s award means that for the first time since 2010, the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards have gone to two English players.

Wayne Rooney and James Milner were the last pair to achieve that feat.

Foden scored 19 goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season, including on the final day to help his side win a fourth consecutive title.

At 23 years old, he is the youngest player to have won six league titles.

He has also twice won the YPOTY award and this year has been awarded the Premier League Player of the Season and Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award.

Only two Englishmen have been named Premier League Player of the Season, FWA Footballer of the Year and the PFA Player’s Player of the Year in the same season:

Foden beat the likes of Erling Haaland, Rodri, Martin Odegaard, Palmer and Ollie Watkins to the award.

Speaking at the event, he said: “To win this award is something very special and it is one that I am very proud of and grateful for,” said Foden.

“To be recognised this way by your fellow professionals means everything and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me.

“Last season was another very special one for everyone at the club, but now all our focus is concentrated on trying to achieve more success this term.”

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw and Manchester United’s Grace Clinton won the respective women’s awards.

Shaw, the Player of the Year, helped City to second in the Women’s Super League, scoring 21 goals in 18 games.

Clinton, on loan at Tottenham last term, guided Spurs to the FA Cup final, scoring four goals across the campaign and adding four assists.
