Milan and Tottenham complete transfer… as Richarlison reacts

Tottenham have ended Emerson Royal’s three-year stay in the Premier League by selling the Brazilian right-back to AC Milan in a deal reportedly worth up to £14.5 million.

Emerson made 101 Spurs appearances, scoring four goals and featuring 24 times in all competitions during the 2023-24 season.

Reacting on social media, Spurs forward Richarlison called Emerson his “brother”and joined the club in thanking the 25-year-old.

Emerson Royal stats

Tottenham signed Emerson for a reported fee of £25.8m with £4.3m in potential add-ons when he arrived from Barcelona in August 2021.

Milan, who will compete in the Uefa Champions League in 2024-25, have bought him for £12.8m with potential add-ons of £1.7m, according to Football Italia.

The former Atletico Mineiro and Ponte Preta player scored his first goal for Spurs in a 5-1 home win against Newcastle in April 2022.

Six months later, Emerson was sent off for lunging at Gabriel Martinelli during a 3-1 defeat at arch-rivals Arsenal in the north London derby.

Emerson: Tottenham 2023-24

After knee surgery in March 2023, Emerson became the second player to score a competitive Tottenham goal under manager Ange Postecoglou, netting Spurs’ equalising second goal in a 2-2 draw at Brentford on the opening day of last season.

Postecoglou did not give Emerson more than 45 minutes for almost three months after that game, although he completed 90 minutes in six out of nine matches between November 11 and the end of 2023, playing at left-back and centre-back.

Emerson appeared in four of Tottenham’s final 12 games of the season, reaching 100 appearances in a 4-2 defeat at Liverpool on May 5.

The last of his 10 Brazil caps came with two 90-minute appearances in World Cup Qualifiers in November 2023, and he appeared in their 2021 Copa America final defeat to Argentina.

Tottenham fixtures, schedule

Tottenham’s competitive campaign in their second season under Postecoglou starts with a Premier League trip to Leicester City on August 19 (8pm BST).

They are then at home to Everton on August 24 (3pm) before visiting Newcastle on September 1 (1.30pm) and hosting Arsenal on September 15 (2pm).
