Zion Williamson Listed As Day-to-Day After Tweaking Left Ankle
Zion Williamson is under the microscope after he experienced some soreness in his left ankle. After a year and a change of dealing with various narratives about his injury history, Williamson knew that NBA Twitter would blow up once his injury news came out on Wednesday.
“Twitter already did its thing,” Williamson said jokingly, per ESPN. “They are the doctors, apparently.”
Williamson avoided serious injury and is expected to be day-to-day moving forward, according to him and Coach Willie Green. Green added that Williamson isn’t expected to miss an extended period of time and clarified that he removed Williamson from Wednesday’s game against the Miami Heat for precautionary reasons after he rolled his ankle early in the second quarter while he drive to the rim.
Williamson tweaked his ankle after he planted his left foot trying to get into the lane around Heat center Dewayne Dedmon. He played another three minutes before checking out for good with 11 points, two rebounds, and four assists on 3-7 shooting from the field and 5-6 from the free-throw line.
“It was one of those things where it happened, and I popped back up, like, ‘Yeah, I’m straight,’” Williamson said. “Played a few minutes after that, it felt fine. Then they sent me to the back just to double-check. We wanted to look at it, had a doc look at it, and he just said a little day-to-day soreness. And, but outside of that, I personally feel fine. Wasn’t bad news from the docs.”
Going into Friday’s preseason finale against the Atlanta Hawks, the Pelicans hope they can play their projected starting lineup. The group hasn’t played together yet while Brandon Ingram recovers from left fifth toe soreness. CJ McCollum has only played in two preseason games after Wednesday. Ingram told ESPN that he “felt good” and that his rehab has put him in a position to play on Friday.
New Orleans starts the season with an Oct 19. matchup against the Brooklyn Nets.
