Why these Mets may have what it takes to avoid heartbreaks of past

Just split, baby.

It’s not quite as catchy as the slogan made famous by late former Raiders owner Al Davis — “Just win, baby” — but it’s today’s reality for the Mets. And for the Braves, too.

Win either end of today’s make-up doubleheader in Atlanta, clinch a playoff spot. Get swept and lose your spot to the idle Diamondbacks.

Maybe the Mets will still complete the 2007-2008-2024 trifecta and again have their postseason hopes dashed on the final out of the regular season — Atlanta is a house of horrors, after all — but Sunday’s 5-0 road victory against the Brewers offers some signs that this team might be more trustworthy with their backs against the wall.
