‘We want silverware’ – Maddison outlines Tottenham’s aims for new season

If you ask any Tottenham fan what they desire more than anything, the answer would be a trophy.

The North London club have gone without silverware for over 16 years and despite coming close on several occasions over the past few seasons, they have never been able to get over the line.

From Carabao Cup finals to the Champions League final in Madrid, it has always been a case of falling short at Spurs but James Maddison is looking to put an end to the drought under Ange Postecoglou this season.

The former Leicester midfielder is an FA Cup winner and knows what it takes to finish the job and having had a year to settle in at Spurs now, he is ready to push on and win.

Speaking to the media on the club’s pre-season tour of Asia, he said: “Obviously it was our first season working with the new manager. It was a good season. I think we learned a new way of playing, a new philosophy, but I think we’ve got to strive to have more than just a good season.

“We’ve got to be achieving big things and making history and getting our hands on silverware really.

“We only do that by keeping on improving as a squad, as players, looking to be better and that’s the beauty of starting a new season.

“We need to strive to have more than a good season. We want silverware and we want to make history.

“We’ve benefited from having a year under the manager and now we can kick on.

“We’re obviously a year better off in knowing what he wants from us and the messages are very clear and there and we debrief a lot on what we should be doing and how we want to play and the philosophy that is Tottenham Hotspur and our way.”

“We talk about that a lot and hopefully that can bring us success and we’ll all be very happy then.

Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League last season, just missing out on Champions League football.

But the Europa League gives them a genuine chance of lifting a trophy against lesser opposition than they would face in Europe’s top competition.

They will have to compete with Manchester United but there will be no fear from Spurs under Postecoglou as they take their attacking brand of football overseas.

Spurs are continuing their pre-season tour with a game against Vissel Kobe on Saturday, before lining up against the K League All-Stars.

Following that, they will face Bayern Munich twice in a week and will be reunited with two familiar faces in Harry Kane and Eric Dier.
