Vardy goal draws City level in Premier League

Jamie Vardy’s first Premier League goal for more than 15 months drew Leicester City level with their first effort on target to open Steve Cooper’s account as Foxes manager against Spurs in the Premier League.

City legend Vardy capitalised on being left unmarked to head in Abdul Fatawu’s cross from close range in the 57th minute and score Leicester’s first goal since their return to the top flight at the first time of asking last season.

Pedro Porro had put Tottenham ahead with another goal from a cross after 29 minutes, turning James Maddison’s delivery in with his shoulder.

Vardy goals

Former England international Vardy scored 20 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions as Leicester won last season’s Championship.

The 37-year-old has won the Premier League, FA Cup and two second-tier titles since joining City in 2012, scoring 191 goals in 465 appearances.

“I’ve always said that age is just a number,” the club captain said when he agreed a new one-year contract in the summer. “My legs feel fine so that’s why I carry on until my legs say ‘that’s it, game over’. There will be a day when that comes, but that’s not right now.”

Leicester vs Tottenham: Vardy strikes

There had been some doubt over whether Vardy would be fit to face Tottenham because the veteran did not have a full pre-season.

New manager Cooper explained before the game that Vardy had declared himself ready to start, with City’s frontline already depleted.

Vardy stats

Vardy has the third-most goals of any Leicester player in history and is fourth among their all-time appearance makers.

The Premier League 2019/20 top scorer’s finest moment arrived in 2015/16, when Leicester completed one of the greatest sporting shocks of all time by winning the title with the help of 24 goals by Vardy – one behind Golden Boot winner Harry Kane.

“One hundred per cent, it’s the best league in the world,” Vardy said of the Premier League. “That’s where you want to be playing your football.

“That’s where you want to be putting your performances in and I’m sure all the lads will be well up for it.”
