USA, Argentina, France, Spain all through

The USA, Argentina, Spain, Morocco, Egypt, France, Japan and Paraguay all reached the quarter-finals in the 2024 Summer Olympics football results on Tuesday.

Hosts France will face Argentina in a blockbuster clash, while the USA will play Morocco.

Spain take on Japan, while Egypt are set to face Paraguay.

Spain, who had already progressed, suffered a surprise first loss of the tournament to underdogs Egypt, missing out on top spot in Group C.

There were no such problems for any of the other teams who progressed, with France beating New Zealand 3-0, the USA and Morocco beating Guinea and Iraq respectively by the same score.

Argentina breezed to a 2-0 win against Ukraine while Paraguay beat Mali and Japan overcame Israel.

Spain vs Egypt: La Roja lose

Spain made 10 changes after qualifying with a match to spare but a 2-1 defeat to Egypt may give the tournament favourites a trickier route to the final, starting with what is likely to be a quarter-final test against Japan.

Full-back Marc Pubill hit a post early on for La Roja before winger Ibrahim Adel struck in either half for the Pharoahs, who will face Paraguay, Mali or Israel in the last eight. Samu Omordion’s 90th-minute header could not inspire a Spain comeback during 10 minutes of added time.

Dominican Republic vs Uzbekistan: History made

Forward Alisher Odilov earned Uzbekistan their first ever men’s Olympic football point by slotting in their 58th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Parc des Princes.

Elche winger Rafael Nunez’s penalty had opened the scoring seven minutes earlier for fellow debutants the Dominican Republic, who finished on two points and were also eliminated.

Morocco vs Iraq: Top spot secured

It was a massive achievement for Morocco to top the group by beating Iraq in the final group-stage game.

They finished level on points with Argentina but remained ahead of them as they won in their opening match.

Argentina vs Ukraine: Routine win

Argentina were relying on Morocco to drop points to avoid France in the quarter-finals and they did their job.

A Thiago Almada strike helped them beat Ukraine 2-0 and ensure their safe passage.

France vs New Zealand: Hosts on fire

France continued their incredible form by beating New Zealand 3-0. Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta got on the scoresheet alongside Desire Doue and Arnaud Kalimuendo.

Tensions have been high between the hosts and Argentina due to recent controversy this summer so there could be fireworks when they meet in the first knockout round.

United States vs Guinea: States superior

The USA squeezed through Group A on goal difference after beating Guinea 3-0.

Their win in the final group match ensured they finished above New Zealand, who lost to France.

Paraguay vs Mali: Steady progress

Paraguay did their job to secure second spot by beating Mali 1-0 in their final group game.

Their six points was not quite enough to pip Japan to top spot, but they will fancy their chances against Egypt in the quarter-finals.

Japan vs Israel: Perfect record

Japan maintained their perfect record in the groups by beating Israel 1-0 and finishing on nine points.

Their victory means they top the group but it is not an easy tie against Spain in the next round.
