Tim Donaghy reveals details of the gambling scandal
Famous former basketball referee Tim Donaghy, who worked for the NBA from 1994 to 2007, told the surprising story of his gambling scandal in the documentary “Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul.”
We recommend anyone interested in basketball to watch this documentary, and for the rest of us, here’s a brief excerpt after watching it.
Tim’s professional history began when he spent five years working as a high school referee and then was recruited by the Continental Basketball Association before making his way to the Major Leagues, working 772 games and 20 Playoff games.
By the way, a separate episode of the documentary focuses on the Pacers-Pistons game that ended in a brawl. It was refereed by Donaghy.
A dark streak in Tim’s life began when he agreed to provide information about the upcoming games to third parties, and then he himself began to adjust the results and decisions in the match under the bets made.
As revealed later by an FBI investigation, Donaghy was connected to the Gambino clan mafia, who encouraged him to give new predictions, with which they made huge amounts of money.
When things got as tense as possible, Tim Donaghy made a clean confession in 2007, after which he was charged with “conspiracy to commit fraud by electronic means and to transmit betting information through interstate commerce.”
The judge was sentenced to 15 months in prison, which he served in full. After his release, he wrote a book about his experiences and tried to share as much information as he could to get the word out to the general public.
After his release, Tim worked at a gambling addiction rehabilitation center where he helped not only betting addicts but gambling addicts as well. Many Americans start with trips to casinos in Las Vegas and end up playing in real money online casinos, which are quite easy to find online.
After working at the center, Donaghy settled in Sarasota, Florida, and began investing in real estate. He also officiated one professional wrestling match at Major League Wrestling in 2021.
