Thomas Tuchel in advanced talks to become New England coach

Thomas Tuchel is in ‘advanced talks’ to become the new head coach of England, according to a report in Germany.

Welt is suggesting the former Chelsea boss is now the Football Association’s preferred candidate and that an agreement could soon be reached.

Lee Carsley, the interim boss, said after last night’s dismal 2-1 defeat at home to Greece that he was hoping to return to lead the Under-21 side, a surprising admission given he was thought to be very much in the running.

The performance, and the tactics utilised, against Greece did Carsley no favours, however, after the Three Lions produced a rudderless display at Wembley which followed back-to-back 2-0 wins against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Tuchel is out of work after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, 12 months before his contract was due to expire. He is reported to have held talks with Manchester United minority owner Jim Ratcliffe over the summer before the club opted to retain Erik ten Hag.

However, with Ten Hag continuing to find the going tough at Old Trafford, it may turn into a straight fight between United and the FA to try to snare the 51-year-old.

Tuchel’s stock remains high in England after leading Chelsea to the 2021 Champions League title. He has also won league titles in France with Paris Saint-Germain and Germany with Bayern.
