The staggering sum Manchester United have spent per point since SAF left

It is fair to say that Manchester United have completely collapsed in their post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The Scotsman dominated the Premier League throughout the years, notching 13 titles along the way – a total that is unlikely to be ever matched.

However, the years since Ferguson have been filled with mismanagement at all levels of the club and, in turn, United have won no league titles and just three cups since the Scot departed.

Two of those cups came under Jose Mourinho, with the remaining one under Louis van Gaal.

Such a poor return over what is getting on for a decade is simply remarkable for a club of United’s stature, especially when you realise just how much the Manchester outfit have spent.

Manchester United’s spend per point

As per the Telegraph, Manchester United spent £5.67m on player transfers and wages for every point gained in their post-Sir Alex Ferguson era from 2013 to 2020.

It is explained that sports economist Stefan Szymanski, and Kieran Maguire – a lecturer on football finance at Liverpool University – analysed outlays on player wages and net spending on transfers to help establish which clubs used their cash most wisely in the last decade.

It was revealed that Manchester United spent £5.67m per point – the most of any club – with the next biggest spender per point gained Manchester City at £4.56m. But at least the Citizens won three titles in that time.

For those interested, Tottenham had the best money spent per point total, though fans will likely agree they have very little to show for it.
