The Rebecca Prophecy Continues on ‘Ted Lasso’: Does It Point to Tedbecca or Rebeccsam?

Ted Lasso Season 3 is leaning hard into the world of magical realism. At least, it seems that every prophetic vision psychic Tish (Emma Davies) gave Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) in Episode 3 “4-5-1” is coming true. First Rebecca was given a green matchbook by her former flame Sam (Toheeb Jimoh). Then she ran into her dull Season 2 ex John (Patrick Baladi) and discovered that he was already engaged to his new girlfriend, Jessica. When Jessica (Victoria Elliott) literally says John was her “shite in knining armor,” Rebecca is shaken.

After two of Tish’s premonitions come true, Rebecca decides to see her old fertility specialist. She’s still hoping to conceive a child, but it may be for nought. Rebecca gets a phone call before the end of the episode and it seems that either she can have a child, or more likely, she’s been told she can’t. And it’s time, like with Ted (Jason Sudeikis) tearing up the “BELIEVE” sign, to move forward from the past. (Besides, Rebecca sort of already is a mother to the boys on the team.)

Of course we still haven’t had the third part of the reading, where there’s thunder, lightning, and Rebecca is upside down and drenched — but she’s safe! — come true. So there’s still time for this psychic to be bunk. However it’s looking more and more like Rebecca’s dreams of a family will come true. If so…who’s the daddy?

While the show seems to keep pointing towards Sam and Rebecca reuniting, hence the importance of the matchbook, many Ted Lasso fans believe Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and Rebecca are endgame. To them, Tish’s reading is full of secret hints that their preferred ‘ship is about to come in.

So what in Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 5 “Signs” points to a Sam/Rebecca finale and what is keeping the Tedbecca ‘shippers afloat?

Why Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 5 “Signs” Points to a Sam/Rebecca Endgame:

Okay, not to be the bearer of bad news, but the obvious surface read of Rebecca’s arc in Ted Lasso Season 3 is that she is reappraising her personal life and Sam is a big part of that.

Tish says that she sees a green matchbook in Rebecca’s hands and that the object is important. In Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 5, we repeatedly see Rebecca holding the green matchbook from Sam’s restaurant as she contemplates her future. She hasn’t reached out to her ex — yet — but he’s clearly front of mind. (Also for folks theorizing that the green matchbook is actually Ted’s green match book, i.e. his work notebook, we haven’t yet seen Rebecca holding it.)

The fact that the “shite in knining armor” wasn’t a phrase used to describe Ted — as Tedbecca fans were theorizing — also suggests that the show isn’t going out of its way to link Richmond’s coach and owner.

…or are they?

Why Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 5 “Signs” Points to a Ted/Rebecca Endgame:

Maybe the biggest reason why Tedbecca fans should be rejoicing this week is we’ve gotten yet another completely bizarre, emotionally-unhinged interaction between Ted and Rebecca in a hallway this week.

After Rebecca confides in Higgins (Jeremy Swift) about the psychic, he gives her the advice that even if psychics are charlatans, “they can help us see something in ourselves that we can’t quite see ourselves.” We cut to a quick scene with Nate (Nick Mohammed) and then watch as Rebecca and Ted awkwardly pass each other in the halls of Richmond. Rebecca calls Ted “Coach,” and he refers to her as “Rebecca.” It’s weird because she usually calls him “Ted” and his nickname for her is “Boss.”

The two pause and clear the air about the fight they had after their most recent loss. Ted cracks the joke, “I can be a little psychic,” which takes Rebecca aback. She apologizes for bullying Ted. They both seem to be unsettled by the energy between them and quickly end the conversation. Both walk away as if something odd has happened.

There could also be an argument made to the fact that one of the shots of Rebecca holding the matchbook is blocked in such a way that Ted’s biscuit box is actually in the center of frame. She’s focused on the green matchbook at the risk of missing out on what’s literally right in front of her…Ted.

Is it possible that these two are starting to change the way they see each other? Could it be that what they can’t see for themselves is how perfect they are for each other? Is this the beginning of Ted and Rebecca’s romance?

We’ll have to see what a team trip to Amsterdam means for this particular plot line in next week’s all-new episode of Ted Lasso, “Sunflowers.”
