Team USA divers Sarah Bacon, Kassidy Cook earn country’s first medal at 2024 Paris Olympics
Team USA won its first 2024 Olympic medals in Paris as divers Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook claimed second place in the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard event on Saturday.
Bacon and Cook totaled 314.64 points in the dive, just 23.04 points shy of the 337.68 points earned by gold medal recipients Yani Chang and Yiwen Chen of China.
The American duo beat out Great Britain’s Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen, who had 302.28 points.
Bacon, the 27-year-old Indianapolis native who graduated from the University of Minnesota, was making her Olympic debut.
She has earned the silver medal twice at the World Championships for the 1m springboard event, once in 2019 and again in 2022.
Bacon will also compete in the individual 3m springboard after winning the event at the US Olympic Qualifying in June.
Cook, who missed the 2020 Olympics made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio de Janiero Games where she came in 13th in the 3m Springboard.
The 29-year-old The Woodlands, Texas native graduated from Standford University in 2018.
The podium finish was the US’ first medal in the Women’s Synchronized Springboard since Kelci Bryant and Abby Johnston won silver in London in 2012.
China picked up its second gold medal of the games after winning the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event earlier in the day.
