Indian teenager Gukesh to challenge China’s Ding for world chess title | Sports News

Seventeen-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju sets up world title showdown after winning the 2024 Candidates Tournament.

India’s Gukesh Dommaraju has become the youngest player to win the men’s Candidates chess tournament after a draw against Hikaru Nakamura on a nail-biting final day of the double round-robin event in Toronto.

The 17-year-old grandmaster effectively wrapped up victory in the tournament on Sunday after American Fabiano Caruana blundered a winning position against Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi to be held to a draw.

Gukesh’s draw with the black pieces put him on 9/14 with Nakamura, Nepomniachtchi and Caruana finishing on 8.5/14.

With the win, Gukesh has set up a world chess title showdown against reigning champion Ding Liren of China.

The grandmaster from Chennai in India’s southern Tamil Nadu state termed the final game “crazy” and said he was feeling “quite emotional” once it was over.

“I am feeling quite good but the journey is only halfway through,” Gukesh said after the game, referring to his qualification for the championship qualification.

Gukesh, who was one of three Indian players in the eight-man Candidates tournament, will face Ding for the title later this year.

The world number 16 played down his achievement as the youngest challenger to the world title.

“I’m just happy about winning and don’t really care about records,” he told reporters.

The youngest winner of a Candidates tournament was Garry Kasparov, who was 20 when he prevailed in 1984, a year before sealing the world champion title against fellow Russian Anatoly Karpov.

Gukesh received widespread support from the Indian diaspora, a large number of whom turned up at the tournament venue.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Gukesh on the win.

“Gukesh’s remarkable achievement at the Candidates in Toronto showcases his extraordinary talent and dedication,” Modi wrote in a post on X.

World number one Magnus Carlsen, a five-time classical chess world champion, relinquished his title last year, citing a lack of motivation.

Tan Zhongyi dominated the women’s tournament and will face fellow Chinese Ju Wenjun for the world title.

Kiptum remembered in Kenya’s London Marathon double | Athletics News

Kenya’s Peres Jepchirchir and Alexander Mutiso Munyao won the women’s and men’s elite races on a poignant day at the London Marathon.

Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir won the London Marathon in a women’s-only world record as Alexander Mutiso Munyao’s victory in the men’s race made it a Kenyan double.

The race on Sunday was preceded by 30 seconds of applause for Kelvin Kiptum, 2023 winner of the men’s race, who was killed in a car accident in February.

The poignant day ended with Jepchirchir in particular putting down a marker ahead of her title defence at the Paris Olympics.

The field for the women’s race was considered one of the best ever assembled, with three of the four fastest women in history competing.

The 30-year-old Kenyan came home in front of world record holders Tigst Assefa and Joyciline Jepkosgei to break the record mark without male pacemakers.

Jepchirchir’s time of 2 hours 16 minutes 16 seconds smashed the women’s-only course record of 2:17:01 set by compatriot Mary Keitany in 2017.

“I was not expecting to run a world record,” said Jepchirchir. “I knew it might be beat, but I did not expect it to be me.

“I am so happy to qualify for the Olympics and I feel grateful. I’m happy to be at Paris and my pray[er] is to be there and run well to defend my title. I know it won’t be easy but I’ll try my best.”

In the men’s race, Munyao delivered another win for Kenya on a day when the London Marathon remembered last year’s champion: Kiptum, who was killed in a car crash in Kenya in February.

Kiptum’s countryman and friend ran alone down the final straight in front of Buckingham Palace to earn an impressive victory in his first major marathon.

Mutiso Munyao said he spoke to Kiptum after his win in London last year and that the world record holder is always on his mind when he’s competing.

“He’s in my thoughts every time, because he was my great friend,” Mutiso Munyao said. “It was a good day for me.”

Mutiso Munyao denied 41-year-old Kenenisa Bekele a first victory in the 42km (26.2-mile) London Marathon by pulling away from the Ethiopian great with about 3km (1.9 miles) to go Sunday for his biggest career win.

Mutiso Munyao and Bekele were in a two-way fight for the win until the Kenyan made his move as they ran along the River Thames, quickly building a six-second gap that only grew as he ran toward the finish.

“At 40 kilometers (25 miles), when my friend Bekele was left [behind], I had confidence that I can win this race,” the 27-year-old Mutiso Munyao said.

He finished in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 1 second, with Bekele finishing 14 seconds behind. Emile Cairess of Britain was third, 2:45 back.

Bekele, the Ethiopian former Olympic 10,000 and 5,000-metre champion, was also the runner-up in London in 2017, but has never won the race.

Mutiso Munyao is relatively unknown in marathon circles and said he wasn’t sure whether this win would be enough to make Kenya’s Olympic team for Paris.

“I hope for the best,” he said. “If they select me I will go and work for it.”

Defending NBA champs Denver beat LeBron’s Lakers 114-103 in playoff opener | Basketball News

In a repeat matchup of last season’s Western Conference final, Denver clinched Game 1 over the Los Angeles Lakers.

The defending champions, Denver Nuggets, powered by 32 points from Nikola Jokic, shook off a slow start to beat LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers 114-103 in game one of their NBA playoffs first-round series.

The Nuggets, who swept the Lakers in four games in the Western Conference finals on the way to their first title last season, continued their dominance of star-studded Los Angeles on Saturday.

Jokic added 12 rebounds and seven assists, Jamal Murray added 22 points with 10 assists and Michael Porter Jr scored 19 for the Nuggets, who used a 13-0 scoring run to take charge in the third quarter – in which they restricted the Lakers to 18 points.

James scored 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Anthony Davis added 27 for the Lakers, who cut a 15-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to six only for the Nuggets to pull away again.

Jokic’s only three-pointer of the game pushed the Nuggets’ lead to 103-93. He added a dunk over James, who took a hard fall with a minute remaining but stayed in the game to the bitter end.

“Mindset needed to change,” Jokic said of the Nuggets’ third-quarter resurgence. “I think for the second half defence was amazing.”

Lakers coach Darvin Ham said the Nuggets’ 15-6 superiority in offensive rebounding was key as Denver piled up 18 second-chance points.

“You can’t allow them to get multiple possessions,” said Ham, who added that he still believed the best-of-seven series, which resumes Monday, will be a “hard fought” affair.

The game was the finale of the first day of the playoffs, which saw the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Phoenix Suns 120-95, the New York Knicks beat the Philadelphia 76ers 111-104 and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Orlando Magic 97-83.

Brazil football legend Romario announces comeback at 58 | Football News

Many will recall Romario’s starring role at the 1994 World Cup, but he’s registered to play again in Brazilian football.

At 58, Brazilian football legend Romario has quite a resume: World Cup winner, senator, and president of his favorite club, America Football Club of Rio de Janeiro.

Now, 15 years after hanging up his boots, the iconic striker has decided to add another entry to his CV, coming out of retirement to rejoin America as a player.

The 1994 World Cup winner announced Wednesday he has officially registered to play again for struggling America, who are currently playing in the second division of the Rio state championship and fighting to return to the top flight.

“I’m ready to try to give my beloved America a little help,” Romario wrote on Instagram.

“Thank you everyone for your support!”

It will be a family affair: Romario’s son Romarinho, 30, also plays as a forward for the club.

“It will be dream come true to share the pitch with my son,” Romario wrote.

In an earlier post on Tuesday, Romario said he did not plan to play the entire state championship.

“I just want to play some matches with my beloved team and realize the dream of playing alongside my son,” he wrote.

Romario grew up cheering for America, his late father’s favourite club.

But he started his professional career with their local rivals, Vasco da Gama, and soon transferred to Europe, where he shone with PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona.

Along the way, he was an integral member of the Brazil side that won the 1994 World Cup in the United States, winning the FIFA World Player of the Year award the same year.

He retired in 2008 but made a first comeback the following year to play a brief stint at America.

Elected to the Senate in 2015 and re-elected in 2022, Romario has been president at America since January, tasked with patching up the club’s tattered finances and returning it to top-flight play.

Three key talking points entering the NBA Eastern Conference playoffs | Basketball News

The NBA Eastern Conference postseason begins on Wednesday night with the play-in tournament.

The top six teams from the conference have already qualified for the playoffs, while seeds seven through 10 enter the play-in tournament for an opportunity to qualify for the final two playoff spots in each conference.

Here are three key Eastern Conference talking points ahead of the NBA playoffs:

1. Are the second-placed New York Knicks playoff contenders or pretenders in the East?

The Knicks squeaked into the number two spot in the Eastern Conference standings on the final day of the season on Sunday.

For a franchise that has not won an NBA championship in 51 years and an Eastern Conference crown since 1999, this was exciting news and heralded in an exciting new era for one of the league’s most storied teams.

Led by a single, diminutive, by NBA standards, All-Star blessed with the heart of a lion, Jalen Brunson has New Yorkers believing that this could be the year the team finally starts winning playoff series again.

The 1.88-metre (six-foot-two-inch) Brunson refused to let his team falter this season, despite injuries to key players constantly threatening to derail their campaign. The point guard averaged a career-high 28.7 points per game and delivered over and over in crunch time to win his team games that sometimes they had no business winning.

And herein lies the dilemma for Brunson and the Knickerbockers: if they overachieved in the regular season, will they be able to do so again in the playoffs, where teams have more time to prepare defensive strategies over the course of a seven-game series?

In the absence of key forward Julius Randle – out for the playoffs with season-ending shoulder surgery – Brunson’s regular season scoring average – 28.7 points per game – is almost as much as his next two teammates combined in Donte DiVincenzo – 15.5 ppg – and Immanuel Anunoby – 14.1 ppg.

In the Eastern Conference playoffs, this poses a major problem for the Knicks when they play high-scoring super teams with multiple All-Stars like Boston, Milwaukee and Philadelphia.

The Knicks final regular season game on Sunday was a perfect snapshot of their season, their team, their performance, gutting out a relentless one-point, overtime victory against the Chicago Bulls with Brunson bravely leading the way with 40 points in a never-say-die performance.

For New York to win the East, it would be easy to say “As Brunson goes, surely do the Knicks” – but even a career-best playoffs showing by the little floor general may not be enough to take NY to the promised land.

2. The Eastern Conference crown is Boston’s to lose.

Making a statistical case for Boston to win the East might be the easiest task in NBA reportage:

  • First team in either conference to clinch a postseason spot
  • Finished with the NBA’s best regular season win-loss record at 64-18, that is eight games better than anyone else
  • Finished first in the Eastern Conference standings by 14 games
  • NBA’s best win-loss point differential at 11.4
  • Scored 1.22 points per possession, which is the best in NBA history

If statistics do not tell the whole story, then it is also important to point out that the Celtics easily have the most complete starting five in the East, with All-Stars Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown flanked by some of the league’s best role players in Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and Derrick White.

Despite their historically great season, the Celtics are not infallible. This star-studded team has gone off the rails from time to time, making one question their intensity and/or tactics – but not their talent.

The Celtics lost both matchups this season against the hapless Atlanta Hawks, and in perhaps the NBA’s single biggest one-game humiliation, they lost a stunner on home court against a depleted Lakers squad playing without their All-Stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

They also lost twice to the defending NBA champions Denver, which exposed the Celtics’ regular habit of alternating between superb team play and relying too often – especially in crunch time – on the do-it-yourself sublime individual talents of their mercurial wing players Tatum and Brown.

Boston may indeed be the league’s best team, but no NBA title was ever won in the regular season; they will have to impose that dominance once again in the Eastern Conference playoffs to win their first NBA championship since 2008.

3. Does Joel Embiid’s late-season return from injury put the Philadelphia 76ers back in the Eastern Conference playoff race?

The reigning most valuable player’s (MVP) knee injury on January 30, 2024, killed his team’s chances of finishing in the top two in the Eastern Conference playoff standings.

Embiid’s return to NBA action just days before the end of the regular season threw a gigantic spanner into the works of a conference that features only one great team, the Celtics, and several quite decent teams – Bucks, Magic, Knicks, Cavs.

Pre-injury, Embiid was scoring at a faster rate than any player ever has in the NBA regular season.

With a pro-rated scoring rate of 38 points per 36 minutes, Embiid enjoyed the highest “per-minute” scoring average in league history, surpassing even the best per-minute scoring season of the legendary Michael Jordan in 1987/88.

If unprecedented scoring statistics are not enough to calculate the 30-year-old’s worth to the 76ers, then this might be: In the 39 games Embiid played in the regular season, Philadelphia had the NBA’s best record at 31 wins and eight losses. Without him, they were 16 and 27.

The unexpected rise of Tyrese Maxey as a first-time NBA All-Star is further cause for Philadelphia’s optimism heading into the postseason. The super-athletic guard averaged a career-best 25.9 points per game to finish 11th in the NBA scoring race.

The seventh-seeded 76ers will first need to clinch their winner-take-all play-in game on Wednesday night to qualify for the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Their opponent is none other than last year’s Eastern Conference champion, the Miami Heat.

Philadelphia is favoured against Miami, but the Heat might be relying on the most ominous Embiid statistic of them all: The gigantic 2.14-metre (seven-foot), 127-kilo (280-pound) centre has suffered an injury in every postseason of his career.

Paris 2024 torch lit in Olympics birthplace, relay under way | Olympics News

The torch relay for the Paris 2024 Olympics has gotten under way at the birthplace of the games in Greece.

The torch for the Paris 2024 Olympics was lit in ancient Olympia in a traditional ceremony, marking the final stretch of the seven-year preparations for the games starting on July 26.

Greek actress Mary Mina, playing the role of high priestess, lit the torch on Tuesday using a backup flame instead of a parabolic mirror due to cloudy skies for the start of a relay in Greece and France.

It will culminate with the lighting of the Olympic flame in the French capital at the opening ceremony. Paris will host the Summer Olympics for a third time after 1900 and 1924.

“In these difficult times we are living through, with wars and conflicts on the rise, people are fed up with all the hate, the aggression and negative news they are facing day in and day out,” International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said in his speech.

“We are longing for something which brings us together, something that is unifying, something that gives us hope. The Olympic flame that we are lighting today is the symbol of this hope.”

The flame will be officially handed over to Paris Games organisers in Athens’s Panathenaic Stadium, the site of the first modern games in 1896, on April 26 after an 11-day relay across Greece.

It will then depart the next day for France on board a three-masted ship, the Belem, which will arrive in Marseille on May 8, with up to 150,000 people expected to attend the ceremony in the southern city’s Old Port.

Marseille, founded by the Greek settlers of Phocaea around 600 BC, will host the sailing competitions.

The French torch relay will last 68 days and will end in Paris with the lighting of the Olympic flame on July 26.

Saudi reviews football fan rules after whip attack | Football News

Saudi football authorities to review fan protocols after Al Ittihad’s Abderrazak Hamdallah was whipped by a spectator.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) has vowed to review the fan code of conduct after a “disgraceful” attack in which a spectator appeared to whip a player.

The incident occurred on Thursday, April 11, during a match between Saudi teams Al Ittihad and Al Hilal at the Saudi Super Cup in Abu Dhabi.

Footage circulating online shows Al Ittihad striker Abderrazak Hamdallah, a Moroccan national, getting into a tense exchange with – and flinging water on – a thobe-wearing fan in the stands who then strikes Hamdallah with what looks like a whip.

Spectators and players then intervene to separate the two men.

Hamdallah scored in the 21st minute but his team went on to lose 4-1.

SAFF and the Football Players Association of Saudi Arabia said in a statement at the weekend that they were “shocked with the disgraceful scenes” and that their priority was to ensure the safety of everyone at matches.

“Football in Saudi Arabia is a family game and, thankfully, fan disorder is extremely rare. It’s why the actions of this ‘so called’ fan go against all that Saudi football represents and we completely condemn the incident,” said the statement dated Sunday.

“There will be a thorough review of the spectator code of conduct. The review will ensure updated rules and regulations are put in place to swiftly and effectively impose suitable penalties to help avoid any repeat of such incidents.”

Saudi Arabia has made strides to become a global force in football.

It is the sole candidate to host the World Cup in 2034 and the Saudi Pro League has offered eye-watering salaries to lure stars including Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema.

Jonatan Christie wins first continental title, establishing the 26-year-old as a medal contender at Paris 2024.

Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie clinched his maiden Badminton Asia Championships crown, seeing off Li Shi Feng in two sets.

Christie defeated home favourite Li 21-15, 21-16 in the tournament finale in the Chinese city of Ningbo on Sunday.

Earlier, China’s Wang Zhi Yi swatted aside compatriot Chen Yu Fei 21-19, 21-7 to claim the women’s singles title.

Wang’s victory came after world number one, South Korean An Se-young, was dumped out in the quarterfinals on Friday by China’s He Bingjiao.

An, the top seed in Ningbo, will still be the favourite to win gold at this summer’s Paris Olympics, but she has been struggling with a knee injury.

The men’s doubles title was claimed on Sunday by Chinese pair Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, who dispatched Malaysian duo Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin 21-17, 15-21, 21-10.

South Korean partners Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee took the women’s doubles title by beating China’s Zhang Shu Xian and Zheng Yu 23-21, 21-12.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa – Premier League match preview | Football News

Arsenal welcome back ‘unbelievable’ Aston Villa manager Unai Emery for the first time in the Premier League on Sunday.

Who: Arsenal vs Aston Villa, Premier League
Where: Emirates Stadium, London
When: Sunday, April 14, 15:30 GMT
Head-to-head record: 202 games – 87 wins for Arsenal, 70 for Aston Villa, 45 draws

Aston Villa’s progress under former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has been incredible, his successor Mikel Arteta at the Gunners said ahead of their Premier League clash.

Sunday will be the first time Emery has faced Arsenal’s home fans since leaving the club, with his previous visit in 2021 as Villarreal manager taking place behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“What they have done since Unai came in, he has made a huge impact at the club in terms of performance. They are still in European competition and played (on Thursday). Really impressed by what they have done,” Arteta told reporters.

Villa finished seventh last season after Emery joined in October 2022, their first top-10 finish since 2010-11. They are now fifth on 60 points, 11 behind leaders Arsenal.

The 52-year-old Emery also completed 1,000 matches as a manager when Villa beat Lille 2-1 in their Europa Conference League quarterfinal, first leg on Thursday.

“Unbelievable. And he’s done it in so many different countries and contexts,” Arteta said.

“He’s from very close to my hometown. I have huge admiration and respect for him. Wish him the best after Sunday.”

Arsenal have already come unstuck against the Villains

Arsenal lost at Villa in October and, with Liverpool level on points and defending champions Manchester City one behind, Arteta stressed the need to focus on each match without letting the title race be a distraction.

“Every game is going to define what our future looks like,” he added. “It’s the only thing possible to look at one game, and one day. Because it’s the only thing that maintains your focus and determining the task that you have to do on the day.”

In striker Ollie Watkins, who has been involved in a league-high 28 goals (18 goals and 10 assists), Villa have a player capable of denting Arsenal’s hopes.

Indeed, Watkins is only one short of matching the club record of 19 Premier League goals set by Christian Benteke in 2012-13.

Douglas Luiz is suspended after the midfielder picked up a 10th yellow card last weekend.

Matty Cash and Clement Lenglet have returned to training and could make an appearance but Tyrone Mings, Jacob Ramsey, Boubacar Kamara and Emi Buendia are all still injured.

Al Jazeera Sport will have live coverage of both Arsenal and Liverpool’s matches on Sunday, including four hours of build-up as well as full text commentaries and post-match reactions.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace – Premier League match preview | Football News

Premier League contenders Liverpool entertain Crystal Palace on Sunday, seeking to eradicate shock Europa League defeat.

Who: Liverpool vs Crystal Palace, Premier League
Where: Anfield
When: Sunday, April 12 13:00 GMT
Head-to-head record: 62 games – 35 wins for Liverpool, 14 for Crystal Palace, 13 draws

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has promised a strong reaction from his team, stunned by their 3-0 Europa League quarterfinal home loss to Atalanta, when they host Crystal Palace in Sunday’s Premier League clash at Anfield.

Gianluca Scamacca struck either side of halftime before Mario Pasalic capped an impressive win for the Italians in Thursday’s first leg as Liverpool slumped to their joint-heaviest home defeat in European competition.

Liverpool will seek to overturn the deficit in the second leg in Italy next week and keep their hopes of a European title alive, but there is also much at stake in their meeting with Palace.

The Merseyside club are involved in a tight title race in the Premier League and sit in second place, level on 71 points with Arsenal and one ahead of Manchester City, entering match week 33, with seven games left in the season.

“The good thing about a really bad performance is that you can play better. We should start from there. I told the boys ‘take it home’, nobody will sleep great and tomorrow we come together,” Klopp told reporters.

“Yes, we have to show a reaction. Definitely, 100%, that is clear.

“It is now not the first time in my life that I lost a football game, unfortunately.”

All change for Liverpool

Klopp made six changes to his team for the defeat by Atalanta but the recently injured trio of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Stefan Bajcetic and Diogo Jota were left on the bench.

The German said players returning from injury could no longer afford to ease their way back to full fitness, adding: “My job is not the easiest in the world, not the most difficult as well.

“It’s about when you have players you need to make sure that you get them together on the pitch and then it works out somehow.

“We need them all and we need them all aggressive, fit, going for it, a bit angry, full of desire, stuff like this, and not so much dealing with your own situation, like ‘I’ve no rhythm, I didn’t play for ages’, stuff like this. You have to try to avoid that.”

Crystal Palace will be without the services of Chris Richards, Rob Holding, Cheick Doucoure and Matheus Franca, who are all out with injuries.

The Eagles are boosted by the return of fit-again Michael Olise and his manager Oliver Glasner says the midfielder may start the game.

Jairo Riedewald has returned to training following an injury which has kept him out since February and the defender could return to the squad.

Palace have only recorded one victory in their last 10 matches, Glasner’s first match in charge, and are without a win in five – losing three in that time.

The run has left the South London club only five points clear of the relegation zone entering match week 33.

We’ll bring you live coverage of the match on Sunday as well as Arsenal against Aston Villa.

Al Jazeera Sport will also have text commentaries of Manchester City and Manchester United’s game on Saturday.
