Giants’ Joe Schoen hopeful Daniel Jones will be ‘ready to go’ by camp

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones bottomed out this past season.

Not only did Jones regress from a career-best season in 2022, but he also suffered the second major neck injury of his career and then suffered a torn ACL in Week 9.

The underperformance and injuries have rekindled calls for the Giants to select a top quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft, but that’s something general manager Joe Schoen has refused to commit to.

Although Schoen admits it’s necessary to address the quarterback situation this offseason — due to Jones’ injuries and the team’s lacking depth — he remains open to all positions and possibilities with the Giants’ first-round pick.

Meanwhile, Schoen has been encouraged by Jones’ recovery.

“He’s doing well. He’s running in a pool now, so he’s progressed to that,” Schoen told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday. “He’s in there every day working hard. Again, I’ve said it multiple times, he’s a kid you’re going to have to pull back.

“He’s (in there) with our early-morning workout people. He’s in there by 6:30. He’s already getting his workout in every day. So, he’s going to work hard at it.”

Schoen has repeatedly stated that Jones will be penciled in as the team’s starter once he returns to the field. And while initial hope was that DJ could return by Week 1, the third-year GM is now hopeful to have his quarterback on the field by the start of training camp in July.

“We’re hoping that he’ll be ready to go once camp starts,” Schoen added.

If Jones were able to return in time for camp, it would be a miraculous recovery. It would be just shy of nine months removed from the torn ACL, which seems a bit pie in the sky.

Either way, Schoen is becoming more and more optimistic about Jones’ return by the day.

Saquon Barkley adjusts representation ahead of Giants negotiations

The New York Giants and representatives for running back Saquon Barkley intend to meet face-to-face at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis later this month.

“The plan is to circle up with his representatives when we get to the Combine,” general manager Joe Schoen said on Tuesday at the Senior Bowl.

There, the two sides will reengage long-term contract negotiations a year after Barkley ended his holdout and reluctantly signed a modified version of the franchise tag.

But when Schoen takes a seat and looks across the table, it won’t be Kim Miale of Roc Nation looking back at him. Instead, it will be CAA’s Ed Berry, who took over late negotiations last spring.

After more than five years with Miale, Barkley has decided to go in a different direction.

From Pat Traina of Sports Illustrated:

According to NFLPA records, Barkley’s sole representation is listed as Ed Berry of CAA, a late addition to the running back’s existing team last summer as he and the Giants attempted to reach a long-term deal by the July 17 deadline.

When that date passed, the Giants and Barkley’s representation team worked out a one-year modified franchise tag featuring incentives that pushed the deal’s potential value to $11 million if those incentives had been reached.

With that deal having expired, Barkley is now looking at another round of negotiations with the Giants, who can apply the franchise tag on their star running back for a second and final time if they so choose.

This time around, Barkley is hopeful he can avoid the franchise tag. And if he can’t, he’s set a deadline for the Giants and Schoen to use it.

“They did it last year. So, I’m numb to it,” Barkley told reporters in January. “I don’t have any feelings toward that at all. If you’re going to do it, just don’t wait until March 5. Just get it over with. If not, let me go. Simple.”

The franchise tag window opens on February 20.

New York Giants will meet with Saquon Barkley’s agents at NFL Combine

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen has a long ‘to-do’ list this offseason but there is one item that many would like to see addressed sooner rather than later.

That is the return of star running back Saquon Barkley, who is eligible for free agency in March. It’s something fans and Barkley’s teammates would like Schoen to settle quickly.

He knows that, too, as the New York Post’s Paul Schwartz reported after Schoen addressed the media at the Senior Bowl down in Mobile, Alabama on Tuesday.

Schoen said he spoke with running back Saquon Barkley, an impending free agent, on the Friday after the season ended.

He characterized it as a “good conversation” and it will not be the last conversation.

“He was getting ready to go to Africa for a Super Bowl commercial,” Schoen said. “The plan is to circle up with his representatives when we get to the Combine.”

The NFL Combine will be held in Indianapolis from Thursday, February 29 through Sunday, March 3. Free agency begins 10 days after that.

If the Giants choose to use the franchise tag on Barkley, as they did last year, they can do so at any time between February 20 through March 5.

The fact that Schoen answered the question of Barkley returning with such assurance could indicate that they could be more willing to offer him a multi-year deal this time around.

Last year, Barkley agreed to a modified version of the franchise with escalators that were not hit. This year’s franchise tag value for running backs is estimated to be around $12.4 million guaranteed for one season.

New York Giants’ Joe Schoen open to drafting QB or RB in Round 1

The New York Giants hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and they will have a slew of talent to choose from.

The big question, however, is if that player could be a quarterback. General manager Joe Schoen, speaking to reporters at the Senior Bowl workouts in Mobile, Alabama on Tuesday, didn’t rule anything out.

“Where we are, we’re in a good spot at six, we’re gonna look at every position we have needs across the board, offensively and defensively,” Schoen said, via the New York Post.

The Giants are still committed to Daniel Jones, who missed the last half of the 2023 season with a torn ACL that required surgery.

Jones is on the books this season for $47.1 million next season with a $69 million dead cap hit. He’s going nowhere for the moment, but that doesn’t mean Schoen will pass on a quarterback he sees and likes as a long-term solution.

Until then, Jones is their man. But that doesn’t mean they couldn’t add a first-round quarterback this year.

It also doesn’t mean they don’t replace Saquon Barkley at No. 6 overall.

“Daniel’s in the building every day working hard. The expectation is for him to be the starter when he’s healthy going into camp and we’re gonna be thorough with our process at every position during the draft, regardless whether it’s quarterback, running back, safety, corner, whatever it is. We’ll take a good player at six,” Schoen said.

The Senior Bowl features two of this class’ top quarterback prospects in Oregon’s Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. of Washington. Schoen and his team of scouts and coaches will be paying close attention.

There are five quarterbacks that are sure to go high in this draft. The aforementioned Penix and Nix, USC’s Caleb Williams, Drake Maye of North Carolina, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels, this year’s Heisman Trophy winner.

Some of them will likely be on the board when the Giants are on the clock at No. 6, so Schoen will have a lot to weigh on draft night.

Giants legend Eli Manning says Brian Daboll must stay true to himself

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has been the subject of negative attention so far this offseason. Multiple reports suggest his coaching style is suffocating, unhinged and intolerable.

After a losing season and with gloomy headlines being run, Daboll has largely avoided the public eye. He’s not been seen at any New York Rangers games, which was a regular occurrence in 2022, and he’s deliberately scheduled press conferences to avoid answering tough questions.

With all of the pessimism swirling, Giants great Eli Manning believes Daboll’s best course of action is to remain true to himself — both in public and on the sideline.

“With coach (Tom) Coughlin, he understood, made some changes, I think it was because he knew he had great leadership in a lot of guys who had been around for a number of years, been used to his system and he could let us take over some of that leadership responsibilities with the team,” Manning told the New York Post.

“Daboll, hey, you got to be yourself though, you got to coach the only way you know how to coach and I think he does a good job, and you can’t let one tough season impact the way you’re gonna be or the way you’re gonna coach.”

Manning also believes that Daboll’s fallout with members of his coaching staff is just a part of football that was made worse by losing.

“That’s just football,” Manning said. “Coming to New York, it’s a tough place and if you don’t do well they’re gonna want change and want to do everything.”

Ultimately, Manning has faith in the current regime led by general manager Joe Schoen and Daboll. He also has an unwavering faith in quarterback Daniel Jones, whom Schoen and Daboll inked to a four-year, $160 million contract a year ago.

“I know he’s determined, I know he wants to be in New York, and it’s not an easy place to play, but he has the mindset, he has the mentality. And I know he will do everything possible to get back and to get back to playing at a high level,” Manning said.

By all accounts, Giants co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch share this same faith in Schoen, Daboll, and Jones.

New York Giants go receiver in Bucky Brooks’ first 2024 mock draft

Mock draft season is in full swing and with the New York Giants picking sixth overall, general manager Joe Schoen has a big decision to make.

Bucky Brooks recently released his first mock for the 2024 NFL draft and similar to the mock released by Daniel Jeremiah last week, he has the Giants going with a wide receiver — Washington’s Rome Odunze — in Round 1.

If the Giants are going to continue with Daniel Jones as their QB1, they must add a legitimate No. 1 receiver to help the quarterback thrive. As a catch-and-run specialist with superior strength and power, Odunze could make the game easier for Jones.

The Giants have been lacking a true No. 1 receiver since they parted ways with Odell Beckham Jr.

With Saquon Barkley’s odds of returning in question and Schoen appearing very committed to Daniel Jones, it would be wise for the Giants to add another weapon to their offense.

Last offseason, the Giants tried to upgrade their pass catchers through trade, free agency, and the draft. Taking Odunze sixth overall would give them a top-notch receiver for Jones to throw to.

Odunze would join a youthful wideout corps that includes Wan’Dale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt.

While many hope the Giants select a quarterback or an offensive lineman with their first-round pick, a case can certainly be made that picking a wide receiver would be the best bet for Big Blue. And that’s why you’ll see the Giants taking a receiver in plenty of mock drafts in the coming months.

New York Giants among the league’s best in 2024 offseason capital

The New York Giants enter the offseason with a multitude of needs that must be addressed and talent gaps they need to narrow in order to compete within the NFC East.

Luckily for general manager Joe Schoen, the Giants are relatively healthy in terms of 2024 offseason capital.

Pro Football Focus recently evaluated the cap health of all 32 teams as well as their stock ahead of the 2024 NFL draft and determined that the Giants are fifth-best in terms of offseason resources.

With a final composite score of 87.1, the Giants are fifth in the league behind the Washington Commanders (100.0), Chicago Bears (96.8), Arizona Cardinals (93.6) and New England Patriots (90.3).

The Giants are in the 45.16 percentile when it comes to the salary cap and in the 87.1 percentile when it comes to draft stock. Their prorate percentile is 56.61.

PFF has draft capital weighted 1.5x of effective cap space and proratable money weighted at 0.25x of cap space.

The Giants are essentially on the fringe but still in the green in terms of spendable cash. They’re also capable of freeing up some additional money but probably not as much as general manager Joe Schoen would like.

What really separates the Giants is their draft stock. PFF lists just four teams with more valuable picks — the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and Arizona Cardinals.

The Giants will enter the 2024 NFL draft with seven total picks in tow, including four in the top 70 and the No. 6 overall pick.

If the NFL sets the 2024 salary cap higher than anticipated, it will help the Giants further but will do nothing to separate them further from the pack as it’s a level playing field.

5 toughest decisions facing New York Giants GM Joe Schoen

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

The main candidate for the franchise tag is running back Saquon Barkley.

This season, Barkley played for the tag salary of approximately $11.1 million. If Schoen is going to tag Barkley a second time (a move that would not sit well with the star running back) it will cost him a bit more — around $12.4 million for one season.

The alternative would be to allow Barkley to test the free-agent waters. That could go either way for both Barkley and the Giants.

Then there is the possibility they lose Barkley to another team altogether. Barkley did not attend his year-end exit interview with management, deciding to just walk out of the building.

“They did it last year. So I’m numb to it,” he said. “I don’t have any feelings toward that at all. If you’re gonna do it, just don’t wait until March 5. Just get it over with. If not, let me go. Simple.”

Giants should stick with Daniel Jones, beef up around him

The speculation is the New York Giants will select a quarterback in next April’s NFL draft.

Big Blue (4-8) will likely be selecting in the top 10 (or higher) and, as we all know, this is a fairly rich quarterback class.

Retired Giants great and future Pro Football Hall of Famer, Eli Manning, doesn’t believe the team should turn the page on his successor, Daniel Jones, just yet.

“Well, they have to make those decisions. I believe in Daniel. I think he’s got a lot of talent,” Manning told Giants Wire. “Unfortunately, (he got) injured this year and he’s got two injuries, one being the ACL, which I know is frustrating.

“They were expected to have a big year and it hasn’t worked out that way. That’s sports, that’s football, that’s what happens. So, I think with where they stand, they could use that draft pick to fill some other areas. But hey, that’s why they have general managers and scouts to make those decisions.”

Manning had forged a close relationship with Jones and believes with an improved offensive line, DJ could continue to be an effective starter.

“Football is one of the great team sports and so, everybody has their responsibilities. It’s one of those things that all 11 guys have to be doing their job and doing it at a high level in order to be successful,” Manning said. “If there’s a slip-up, if there’s a miscommunication and someone gets beat then there is a less likely chance of being successful. So, it’s about everybody coming together and getting open in a timely fashion and staying on their assignments.”

Jones is rehabbing from the surgery he underwent last week on his torn ACL and should be ready for the 2024 season. The Giants are locked into him for at least next season and, if anything, could select a quarterback to develop behind Jones as insurance.

Whether they will use a first-round pick on one is the question. This week, general manager Joe Schoen spoke about the team’s plans at quarterback.

“I think we’re going to have to do something on the quarterback, whether it’s free agency or the draft,” he said. “I mean, just where we are, (quarterback) Tyrod (Taylor)’s contract is up, (Tommy) DeVito is obviously under contract, and Daniel, we don’t know when he’s going to be ready.

“So, just from an offseason program standpoint, I think that’ll be a position that we’ll have to look at. There are different avenues — free agency or the draft — but we’ll have to address it at some point.”
