Sue Bird Becomes Winningest Player in WNBA History
Sue Bird added another accolade to her Hall-of-Fame career when the Seattle Strom knocked off the WNBA-leading Las Vegas Aces, 88-78, Wednesday night.
The double-digit gave Bird her 324th WNBA victory, making her the winningest player in the history of the League. Bird surpassed former Lynx and Sun point guard Lindsay Whalen on the all-time list as she continues to establish herself as one of the greatest players in WNBA history.
Bird, a four-time WNBA Champion, and 13-time All-Star, announced earlier this month that the 2022 season would be her final season in the W.
“It’s not only the assists with Sue; it’s making big plays, the big shots. I thought she played great defense tonight,” Storm Coach Noelle Quinn said PER ESPN. “Those intangibles that she brings, but also: She’s the GOAT, an amazing player with a long career and deserving of every single record she’s about to break because she’s played 20-something years.”
Bird is the League’s all-time leader in assists at 3,142 and was honored on the WNBA’s 10th, 15th, 20th, and 25th Anniversary Teams. She’s also a two-time NCAA Champion and was the No. 1 overall pick out of UConn in 2002. In international play, Bird has notched five gold medals with Team USA.
She scored 13 points, dished six assists, and grabbed two rebounds to help the Storm secure the 10-point victory. At 12-7, Seattle is just two games back of the Aces for first place in the WNBA standings. Bird can add another win to her tally when the Storm hosts the Indiana Fever on Friday.
