Arne Slot says his Liverpool side have “all the ingredients” to be successful this season despite missing the chance to go 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League table after being held 2-2 by Aston Villa.

In an enthralling encounter at Villa Park, Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool an early lead before goals from Youri Tielemans and Ollie Watkins before the break turned the tie on its head.

Trent Alexander-Arnold levelled things shortly after the hour mark as Arne Slot’s team had to settle for a point.

The result leaves the Reds eight points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who now have a game in hand.

But the Liverpool boss believes his team can still achieve success this term.

“It does matter where we are in the league table. There is always pressure when you play for Liverpool,” Slot told TNT Sports after the game.

“We want to achieve something together this season and we have all the ingredients for it.

“There are still 12 games to go, and Champions League games, but we are happy where we are.”

Slot did, however, admit that he has been left frustrated on more than one occasion where, he believes, the result has not been reflective of the performance.

The Dutchman also appeared to single out striker Darwin Nunez, who missed a glorious chance to put Liverpool ahead after coming on as a second-half substitute against Unai Emery’s side.

“There’s been a bit too much where we have played games where we deserved more than we got,” Slot said.

“I look at the Newcastle game [in December] where we conceded in the last minute, and some other games, today included, where in my opinion, if there was one team who deserved to win, it was us.

“I think we had some very good moments and even scored the first goal from a good pressing moment. But we took it the way the game went. They [Villa] could come back in the final minute but if you look at the chances we had in the second half to go in-front, you can understand there is one person in the dressing room who feels quite down.

“And you know who it is I think.”

Next up for Liverpool is a trip to reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City, on Sunday. Villa, meanwhile, host Chelsea on Saturday.
