Simone Biles fires back at critics saying she ‘choked’ with ‘twisties’

Simone Biles has issued her sharpest response yet to pundits who said she “choked” during her debilitating bout with the “twisties” during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

In the recently released Netflix docuseries, “Simone Biles Rising,” the four-time Olympic gold medalist addressed those who called her a quitter, specifically reading one post that stated she “choked.”

Biles, 27, said derisively that the writer was “sitting on your couch watching me from home. OK.” 

“I really don’t need your two cents,” the gymnast continued, as covered by the Laredo Morning Times. “And not your two cents because you guys can’t even do a cartwheel.”

Biles withdrew from several events in Tokyo after experiencing the “twisties,” a mental health block gymnasts grapple with when they lose control of their bodies mid-air.

She stumbled in the vault competion and did not participate in the team final.

Biles did return for the balance beam final in Tokyo and was awarded the bronze medal.

Team USA teammates received silver for the team competition.

Elsewhere in the episode of the docuseries — which will have subsequent installments released this fall — Biles revealed that she wanted to run away from the building after enduring the “twisties” during a vault move.

“If I could have run out of that stadium, I would have,” Biles said. “But I was like ‘keep it cool, calm, collected. Don’t freak anybody out.’” 

Biles, the most decorated female gymnast of all time, has looked in peak form during practice this week, assuaging fears of those closest to her.

“We’re all breathing a little bit better right now. I’m not gonna lie,” Biles’ coach, Cecile Landi, said of how well the gymnast is performing in practice.

Biles, a seven-time Olympic medalist, will first compete in Paris on Sunday in the team qualifiers.

The final is slated for July 30.
