Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Is a Digital-Only Release
Microsoft and Ninja Theory have confirmed that Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade 2 is a digital only release. The game will cost $50 and will be available on Xbox Game Pass on launch day.
“We also took advantage of the freedom that digital-only distribution offered us to create a game of the length that fit perfectly with our intended experience but could be sold at a lower price to reflect the shorter length of our story,” studio head Dom Matthews says on Xbox Wire. “This framework allowed us to focus on the things we really care about – taking our fans on an unforgettable journey into Senua’s unique world.”
Matthews went on to explain how proud Ninja Theory was to achieve “independent AAA” when the studio developed its predecessor, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice back in 2017, and being able to create games with seemingly high-end production values while still being creatively independent. With Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade 2, Ninja Theory says it now has Xbox’s financial backing while emboldening its creativity.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was initially a digital only release at launch. However, it did receive a physical edition later on in 2019 with 505 Games publishing the PS4 version and Microsoft publishing the Xbox One version. The Nintendo Switch version remains digital only.
This isn’t the only big game that skipped a physical release. Sega’s Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Remedy’s Alan Wake 2 were also digital-only releases.
During the Xbox Developer Direct 2024, it was revealed that Senua’s Sacrifice: Hellblade 2 launches on May 21 for PC and Xbox Series X|S.
