Russia Strikes Kyiv, Injuring 53 People

Russia struck an apartment building and a hospital in Kyiv on Wednesday, Ukrainian officials said, injuring 53 people, in the third significant strike on the capital in the past week.

Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said early Wednesday that a nighttime attack by Russia had caused destruction in the city. Ukraine’s air defense systems shot down all 10 of the Russian missiles that targeted Kyiv at 3 a.m., the country’s air force said.

The bombardment came two days after the Russian military targeted Kyiv with ballistic missiles and attack drones, which Ukraine said it had shot down. President Volodymyr Zelensky had left for Washington earlier that day, hoping to rally waning American support for his country. Russia has often used his visits abroad to launch waves of major attacks.

Russia also launched missiles, cruise missiles and drones at Kyiv on Thursday night and Friday morning, according to the Institute for the Study of War.

Mr. Klitschko said that fragments from the latest attack had damaged the facade of an apartment building in the district of Dnipro, forcing 15 people to evacuate, including four children and two people with disabilities.

One projectile damaged a hospital building in the same district, leaving a crater in the facility’s premises and shattering the windows in several buildings, Mr. Klitschko added. One person was injured.

Of those injured, in the Dnipro district, 20 were hospitalized, including two children, and 33 were treated at the scene, including six children, he said.

Emergency crews were working to repair damage to the water system in Dnipro caused when rocket fragments fell onto roads, Mr. Klitschko said. The strike also set fire to two houses, he said.
