Robert Saleh gave the saddest reason ever to hype up Zach Wilson
Robert Saleh praised New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson’s great work from a bowl game.
Never in our lives did we think the 2018 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl would carry this much national relevance some four years later…
With the former No. 2 overall pick struggling in year two out of BYU, New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh gave us one helluva back-handed compliment when discussing flailing franchise quarterback Zach Wilson. It was so incredibly Jets of them to draft him over Justin Fields out of Ohio State or Mac Jones out of Alabama, but that is neither here nor there. But that bowl game!
Not since Mitch Tribusky shined in El Paso at the Sun Bowl has a mid-tier bowl game ever held such gravitas in NFL circles.
For that one rare day in Boise, Idaho, that dude Wilson was perfect!
The bigger question is if Wilson received a sticker, a gold star or a potato for going 18-of-18 against Kaleb Eleby and Tim Lester’s Western Michigan Broncos some four years ago?

This Trubskian comparison is hysterical because of its accuracy. Well, that was never really Trubisky’s forte to begin with, as he went 23-of-39 for 280 yards, two touchdowns and two picks in the North Carolina Tar Heels’ narrow 25-23 defeat at the hands of Bryce Love and the Stanford Cardinal. Truth be told, that bowl game did get Trubisky drafted No. 2 overall by the Chicago Bears.
Undoubtedly, Wilson has talent. He has always had it. Unfortunately, the reckless nature in which he plays can and will continue to get him burnt in the NFL. He is not going up against Group of Five or bottom-of-the-barrel Pac-12 talent at this point of his life; this is the NFL! More importantly, his play will impact the jobs of many, and most, of his colleagues who venture into Florham Park.
Sadly, we have not seen Wilson throw a ball as beautiful as the one he majestically uncorked during his BYU Pro Day. Mormons vs. Mullets was a life-changing experience during the height of COVID, but the only thing we have learned about this former Cougar since is that he like cougars more than Bill Walton on the set of ESPN’s College GameDay. He is the Jets’ starting quarterback!
The only person who has been more about 18 and liking it is “No More Mr. Nice Guy”, Alice Cooper.
