Vinicius Junior suffered a sprained left ankle and Lucas Vazquez sustained a left hip muscle injury in Real Madrid’s 4-3 defeat at Barcelona on Sunday, the reigning Spanish champions have announced.

Captain Vazquez was replaced by Endrick six minutes from time and Vinicius Junior made way for Victor Muniz with two minutes remaining at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys.

Madrid host Mallorca on Wednesday (20:30 BST) and visit Sevilla on Sunday (18:00) in LaLiga, although their hopes of finishing top depend on Barcelona failing to win any of their final three top-flight matches of the season.

Mbappe Instagram post promises comeback

The final Clasico of the season looked like being a sensational one for Kylian Mbappe after the striker scored twice inside the first 15 minutes to put Madrid 2-0 ahead and on course to move a point behind Barca.

As it was, four goals for the hosts without reply before the break meant Mbappe’s 70th-minute reply was notable for completing his hat-trick rather than influencing the outcome of a game that has put Hansi Flick’s side on the brink of glory.

“Painful but we will come back,” Mbappe said on Instagram, having moved two goals clear of Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski at the top of the Spanish scoring charts. “Hala Madrid.”

Vinicius Junior injury

Vinicius Junior missed four games in November and December with a muscle injury and the Ballon d’Or runner-up may not be hurried back if Barcelona win the title before Madrid’s trip to Sevilla.

Madrid will be usurped by then if they lose to Mallorca or Barcelona win at 14th-placed Espanyol on Thursday (20:30).

The 24-year-old Brazil international could be reunited with Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti when the Italian becomes Selecao boss on May 26.

Brazil travel to Ecuador on June 6 (00:00) and host Paraguay five days later (01:45) in 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifying.

Lucas Vazquez injury

Vazquez has only missed three games through injury in 2024/25 and the 33-year-old’s issue comes as Ancelotti faces another long list of defensive absentees.

Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba and Ferland Mendy are out and Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao are recovering from long-term injuries.

Aurelien Tchouameni will be suspended against Mallorca, who are ninth after beating Valladolid 2-1 at home on Saturday.

Mbappe Real Madrid stats

Mbappe’s tally of 39 goals in all competitions is the most ever by a Real Madrid player in their debut season, marking an impressive start at the club for the Paris Saint-Germain all-time top scorer, who left the French giants after his contract expired at the end 2023/24.

The 26-year-old has six goals in his last three matches but looks certain to finish the season without a major trophy, having also been part of the 3-2 extra-time defeat to Barca in the Copa del Rey final on April 26.

Madrid complete their season against Real Sociedad on May 25 before starting their Club World Cup schedule against Saudi side Al-Hilal in Florida on June 18 (20:00).
