Prince Harry goes to court in case against tabloids. Here’s what to know.
LONDON — Prince Harry is due in court this week, set to become the first high-ranking British royal to appear in the witness box since 1891.
As part of his declared mission to stop the tabloid media from behaving badly, Harry is suing the publisher of the Daily Mirror and is expected to give evidence and face cross-examination over at least two days.
On Monday, the prince’s lawyer, David Sherborne, told the court that his client had celebrated his daughter’s birthday in Los Angeles over the weekend and would appear in court ready to give testimony on Tuesday. “He is in a different category from the three other claimants due to his travel and security arrangements,” Sherborne said.
Lawyers for the Mirror weren’t liking it, and accused Harry of “wasting” the court’s time, calling it “absolutely extraordinary … that he is not available for day one of his own trial,” before making their opening statements.
