Patrick Mahomes picked Eagles to win Super Bowl, just not against the Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes picked the Philadelphia Eagles to win the Super Bowl, but did so many years ago.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is set to play in the third Super Bowl of his career, after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 14-3 regular-season record and playoff wins over the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cincinnati Bengals. Now, he is set to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles, who have a dominant front seven on defense and a fellow NFL MVP finalist in Jalen Hurts.

As it turns out, Mahomes picked the Eagles to win the Super Bowl…back in 2005.

When Mahomes was nine-years-old, he sent his Super Bowl 39 prediction to the Tyler Morning Telegraph. Sure enough, his prediction of the Eagles defeating the New England Patriots 35-28 made the paper, including his reasoning.

“Eagles are a better team.”

If the Eagles win Super Bowl 57, we can only imagine the amount of Mahomes posts with the quote “Eagles are a better team” as its caption that will flood social media.

It is kind of fitting that Mahomes picked the Eagles, since his current head coach Andy Reid was the sideline boss of the NFC East team that year. Unfortunately for Philadelphia, they were unable to overcome Tom Brady and Bill Belichick, losing 24-21.

The Patriots broke a 14-14 tie in the fourth quarter after a two-yard touchdown run by Corey Dillon and a 21-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri to take a 24-14 lead. The Eagles would cut the deficit down to 24-21 after a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Donovan McNabb to wide receiver Greg Lewis with under two minutes remaining. It was too little, too late for Philadelphia, however.

Mahomes stands in the way of the Eagles winning their second Lombardi Trophy ever. He will have to contend with a Philadelphia defense that allowed just 301.5 yards of offense and 20.1 points per game in the regular season (via ESPN), to win the second Super Bowl ring of his career.
