Orlando Brown update can’t make Patrick Mahomes happy

The Kansas City Chiefs and left tackle Orlando Brown were unable to reach an agreement on a new contract, and it is bad news for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

After watching quarterback Patrick Mahomes run for his life in Super Bowl 55, the Kansas City Chiefs prioritized bolstering the offensive line, and they did just that. One of the big moves they made was acquiring Orlando Brown to be Mahomes’ blindside protector. The team used the franchise tag on Brown for the 2022 season, and it gave them a chance to negotiate a contract extension.

On the July 15 deadline, the two sides were unable to reach an agreement on an extension. That meant Brown would play under the $16.7 million franchise tag in 2022, and the Chiefs would be unable to negotiate a new deal until after the season.

This news is not great for Mahomes.

As mentioned earlier, Mahomes was pressured relentlessly by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense in the Super Bowl, which Kansas City lost 31-9. The team was without their starting tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz due to injury. That is when the Chiefs pivoted to the trade market and acquired Brown from the Ravens for a bevy of draft picks.

In his first season with the Chiefs, Brown allowed just four sacks and was penalized seven times on 1,127 offensive snaps, per Pro Football Focus.

For those wondering what deal the Chiefs offered Brown, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Kansas City’s final offer to Brown was a six-year, $139 million contract, with a $30.25 million signing bonus.

FanSided national NFL reporter Matt Verderame reported earlier that the signing bonus was more than what the San Francisco 49ers gave Trent Williams, which was $30.1 million.

The Chiefs will now have to wait and bank on making an offer that will convince Brown to stay. When looking at the 2023 free agency class, he is the best available offensive tackle. Teams that are in need of a left tackle will no doubt throw money his way to ensure he signs with them and not the Chiefs.

But, they have some time to think things over before reconvening with Brown after the upcoming season. For Mahomes’ sake, the Chiefs better hope they can get a deal done.
