One Chiefs stat puts them in Super Bowl company

The Chiefs are accomplishing something so far this season that hasn’t been done in decades.

Earlier this season, it was bold to state that the Kansas City Chiefs were the favorite out of the AFC to represent the conference in the Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills were reeling and had beaten the Chiefs in mid-October creating questions about how dominant the Chiefs really were.

Since then, the Bills have faltered, with questions outstanding about whether or not they’re even the best team in their own division, as the Miami Dolphins have soared in power rankings.

Meanwhile, Kansas City has proved consistent and not lost since that Bills game, standing at 9-2 (their only other loss of the season was a shocking Week 3 Colts loss). Along the way, they’ve tallied some incredibly impressive stats and shocked absolutely no one by creating an elite offense yet again.

The stats prove it, and their accomplishments thus far put them in conversation with a team from over 20 years ago who made it to the Super Bowl:

2001 Rams lost the Super Bowl, but the feat is still good news for Chiefs fans

As Doug Clawson points out in his Tweet, it’s even more impressive that the Chiefs have done this while having to figure out how to replace Tyreek Hill. Hill has gone on to be a big part of the Dolphins’ run — which may just be the team best equipped to take down the Chiefs — but the Chiefs have found solace in Travis Kelce, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Mecole Hardman.

If they finish the season having accomplished this feat, it would put them alongside the 2001 Rams who were the last team to do it. That team, led by Kurt Warner, went 14-2 but lost in the Super Bowl to the New England Patriots, 20-17.

Anything can happen in the big game, but the fact that the last team to be benchmarking the way the Chiefs are got to the Super Bowl is a great sign for KC. They’re clearly well-equipped for whatever the postseason throws at them, and it’s hard to justify any team in the AFC coming out on top of Kansas City.

Good stuff from Kansas City so far. Next up is the team that beat them out of the playoffs last year: The Cincinnati Bengals.
