Olivier Giroud confirms France retirement

France’s leading all-time goalscorer Olivier Giroud has confirmed his retirement from international football.

The move was widely expected after Giroud said Euro 2024 would be his final tournament with the team.

The 37-year-old leaves having made 137 appearances for Les Bleus, scoring 57 goals in a stellar 13-year career.

He helped France win the 2018 World Cup, despite not scoring in Russia or even having a shot on target in six appearances, but did manage to net four times as Didier Deschamps’ side reached the final four years later where they lost to Argentina in Qatar.

He played a bit part as France reached the semi-finals of Euro 2024 before losing to eventual winners Spain.

He wrote on X: “The most dreaded moment has arrived: saying goodbye to the France national team.

“This France team I served for 13 years will be forever etched in my heart. It is my greatest pride and my best memory.”

Giroud will play for Los Angeles FC in MLS next season after his contract at Milan expired.
