New York Giants’ Joe Schoen open to drafting QB or RB in Round 1
The New York Giants hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft and they will have a slew of talent to choose from.
The big question, however, is if that player could be a quarterback. General manager Joe Schoen, speaking to reporters at the Senior Bowl workouts in Mobile, Alabama on Tuesday, didn’t rule anything out.
“Where we are, we’re in a good spot at six, we’re gonna look at every position we have needs across the board, offensively and defensively,” Schoen said, via the New York Post.
The Giants are still committed to Daniel Jones, who missed the last half of the 2023 season with a torn ACL that required surgery.
Jones is on the books this season for $47.1 million next season with a $69 million dead cap hit. He’s going nowhere for the moment, but that doesn’t mean Schoen will pass on a quarterback he sees and likes as a long-term solution.
Until then, Jones is their man. But that doesn’t mean they couldn’t add a first-round quarterback this year.
It also doesn’t mean they don’t replace Saquon Barkley at No. 6 overall.
“Daniel’s in the building every day working hard. The expectation is for him to be the starter when he’s healthy going into camp and we’re gonna be thorough with our process at every position during the draft, regardless whether it’s quarterback, running back, safety, corner, whatever it is. We’ll take a good player at six,” Schoen said.
The Senior Bowl features two of this class’ top quarterback prospects in Oregon’s Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. of Washington. Schoen and his team of scouts and coaches will be paying close attention.
There are five quarterbacks that are sure to go high in this draft. The aforementioned Penix and Nix, USC’s Caleb Williams, Drake Maye of North Carolina, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels, this year’s Heisman Trophy winner.
Some of them will likely be on the board when the Giants are on the clock at No. 6, so Schoen will have a lot to weigh on draft night.
