New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll ‘proud’ of QB Daniel Jones

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll addressed the media on Friday morning before the team’s eighth practice of training camp.

The weather has become especially dangerous in the Northern New Jersey area as temperatures were in the low-to-mid-90s by the time practice got underway.

The Giants, in switch from last year’s more lenient camp, are in full pads in the oppressive heat.

Daboll gave a quick rundown of the team’s health, revealing veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton was experiencing some ‘tightness’ and would be limited.

The coach said that quarterback Daniel Jones, who had a strong showing at Thursday’s practice, would get as many reps as possible with his top receivers as possible to build “chemistry.”

“What he’s done eight months, or eight and a half months, whatever it may be, and to come back and take every rep. He feels good,” Daboll told reporters. “I’ve talked to him about different things. Hey, ‘scrambling, make sure you feel comfortable out of the pocket, make sure you feel comfortable moving up in the pocket. Making plays with your feet.’ He’s been right on track. It’s pretty impressive to me in terms of you have that injury, this is where he’s at, this is what he’s looked like physically. I’m proud of him.

“So, the timing, the body language, there’s a lot to the passing game to make it work. So, we’re doing as much as we can, whether it’s individual routes, whether it’s certain plays we’re trying to take a look at for those guys. But it’s important to build that chemistry.”

Daboll credited the offensive rookies (Malik Nabers, Theo Johnson, and Tyrone Tracy Jr.) for having good football instincts and having done a good job picking up the offense.

Veterans that Daboll mentioned as having solid showings thus far in camp include defensive lineman Rakeem Nunez-Roches (aka Nacho), citing him as an “excellent leader.”

Another player opening eyes has been linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux. The addition of Brian Burns has had a positive effect on the former first-round pick.

Daboll also mentioned the heated competition at the second cornerback spot across from Deonte Banks. Cor’Dale Flott and Nick McCloud have both played well so far in camp.
