NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made it clear that the league’s expansion plans won’t be crafted with such haste.

Silver pointed out that the association will weigh the expansion for coming years, but they will first prioritize the new television rights of the league. The NBA’s media rights pact is set to end at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season.

“We will turn to expansion once those new media deals are done,” Silver said Monday at the annual APSE conference, per Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. “It’s not a sure thing but, as I’ve said before, I think it’s natural that organizations grow over time.”

Upon the latest implementation of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) which presents the In-Season Tournament, all eyes are anticipating the NBA’s proposals to expand their reach to its audience true league expansion.

The NBA currently has 30 franchises, and cities like Las Vegas, Seattle and Mexico City are consistently gaining considerations who may add up to the list.

“We will look at this market,” he said. “There’s no doubt there’s enormous interest in Seattle. That’s not a secret. There are other markets that have indicated interest. For the people who hear or read about this interview, we are not engaged in that process now. We’re not taking meetings right now with any potential groups.

“What we’re saying to everyone, privately is the same thing I’m saying publicly that there’ll be a very open process at the time already to consider expansion. But that’s not yet. That’s not yet now.”
