Leicester City fans booed as Jacob Murphy scored twice inside the first 11 minutes to put Newcastle 2-0 ahead in the Premier League match between the teams at the King Power Stadium on Monday.

An incisive Magpies move met precious little resistance from the beleaguered hosts, culminating in winger Murphy tapping in his sixth league goal of the season in the second minute from Tino Livramento’s cross from the left.

Goalkeeper Mads Hermansen was then caught off his line by an outlandish Fabian Schar shot from the halfway line, smacking the crossbar and bouncing for Murphy to slot in.

Leicester City vs Newcastle: ‘Perfect start’ for visitors

“How easy is that?” former Leicester forward Alan Smith asked on Sky Sports, discussing the opener.

“Simple as you like. Leicester have five at the back but it doesn’t look that way. Disastrous for Leicester, and the perfect start for Newcastle.

“Jacob Murphy is the only one reacting [for the second]. Three Leicester defenders were jogging rather than sprinting.

“With no disrespect to Leicester, this is a good oportunity to knock in three or four – especially after scoring early.”

Premier League table: Newcastle chase Chelsea

Arriving on a run of three consecutive wins including their EFL Cup final victory over Liverpool, Newcastle knew they would move level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea if they became the eighth top-flight visitors in a row to win at City.

Leicester had failed to score in any of those defeats, last scoring and taking a point at home in a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on December 8 – Van Nistelrooy’s second home game in charge.

The Manchester United legend appeared to chastise his players after Murphy’s first and was seen shaking his head on the touchline during his side’s miserable start.

Before kick-off, Van Nistelrooy was the bookmakers’ favourite to be the next manager to leave his post, having overseen 14 defeats in 17 league matches.

Should they lose, Leicester will be 15 points from safety with seven games remaining and a significant goal inferiority.
