Harry Maguire is determined to repay the Manchester United fans for their loyalty this season and admitted “we’ve disappointed them far too much”.

United take on Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao tomorrow night hoping to clinch the trophy, qualify for the Champions League, and salvage something from a miserable season.

Ruben Amorim’s side sit 16th in the Premier League, a point and a place above Spurs, and are guaranteed to finish in their lowest position since the top flight was rebranded in 1992.

Despite that, fans have remained largely supportive and they will travel to the Basque Country in huge numbers hoping to see their side clinch their first European crown since 2017.

Players surprised by fans’ loyalty

And Maguire says their unconditional backing has not gone unnoticed in the dressing room.

The England international told ESPN: “[The fans] been absolutely incredible this season, it is surprising to us players how much they are backing us.

“We’ve disappointed them far too much. We’ve given them some good times in the Europa League and some great memories in terms of winning the derby at the Etihad and things, but it’s even surprised me.

“It’s been remarkable when we get to play in front of them, even though we’re not performing.

“That’s why I think they deserve it. We have a great opportunity to go and win the cup final and give them that day out. It’s only a good day out if we come back and win the tournament.”

Rotation has contributed to Premier League struggles

Amorim has been happy to rotate his squad in recent weeks, prioritising the Europa League over the Premier League given the huge prize at stake.

And Maguire believes that has contributed to their woeful domestic form with United currently in the middle of an eight-game winless run.

“We know this season’s been nowhere near good enough,” he added.

“I think there is no doubt it has been really difficult. The last couple of months, without saying too much, we have focused on the Europa League in terms of the starting XI.

“It has been frustrating. It shouldn’t be like that. Two months ago, we should have been in a better position where we are fighting for a Europa League position and the Champions League positions. That is what this club demands.

“We know this season has been nowhere near good enough for this club and for our standards. Next season, I know we will improve.”
