Could Erik ten Hag’s power base be slowly withering away at Manchester United?
After the departures of John Murtough and Richard Arnold, two figures crucial in appointing him, another member, this time of his coaching staff, is set to leave.
ESPN reports that Benni McCarthy could be set for departure at the end of the season.
McCarthy’s contract expires in the summer and the South African retains aspirations to become head coach.
Therefore, it is likely that he won’t be offered a new contract and thus, a key member of Ten Hag’s staff will be lost.
McCarthy joined United as an attacking coach, mainly working with the club’s forwards on patterns of play and basic attacking skills.
He was one of the first people to come with Ten Hag, joining in July 2022 and immediately following his appointment, the likes of Marcus Rashford had their best-ever scoring season.
It has all gone off the rails a bit this season as the club malaise has engulfed the players and staff alike.
With Ten Hag’s position also not secure, staff could be looking to leave a sinking ship and in McCarthy’s case, probably a head coach job elsewhere.
He has prior managerial experience back home in South Africa with Cape Town City and AmaZulu but nothing in Europe.
However, his reputation and stock remains fairly high and he is regarded as a key member of Ten Hag’s staff so he might be able to leverage this standing to a better job in Europe.
In the meantime, at United, however, the flux doesn’t seem to be stopping and after nearly 20 years of false dawns and promises by the Glazers, a new era finally seems to be coming in the summer.
