Match Preview for Manchester City v Wolves

Manchester City face the first of “four finals” when they host in-form Wolves tomorrow night.

City have not had the season they would’ve anticipated and head into the final few weeks scrapping for a Champions League place they had become accustomed to taking for granted.

They go into the weekend in fourth position, with the top five earning a place among the European elite.

It has been argued City have an easier run-in than many of their rivals but there is nothing straightforward about a clash with Wolves at the moment.

Vitor Pereira has inspired a remarkable turnaround at Molineux and Wolves will rock up at the Etihad on the back of a six-game winning streak that has propelled them away from the lower reaches and into mid-table.

City boss Pep Guardiola said: “Four Finals we have [in the Premier League], and we go for the first one.

“The quality they have, the shape they play, the courage. It’s no surprise; I think Wolves always had in the last years really, really good players and now they have an incredible run. It’s quite similar to when Newcastle came [to the Etihad] one month ago and Aston Villa came, so yeah – another final for us! It’s an important game we have ahead of us.”

City fans will continue their protests against ticket availability and pricing tomorrow but Guardiola urged them to also get behind the team.

He added: “Come to help us. We need them, because the fans want next season to play in the Champions League and be a better team than we have been in this competition this season, to try to be what we have done for many, many years. So we need them, desperately. Come to help us from the first minute until the end.”

Jorgen Strand Larsen has been key to Wolves’ fine run with six goals in as many games.

He will start again in attack alongside Matheus Cunha and is ready for the challenge of facing the four-time defending champions.

The Norwegian told the club’s official website: “Going into this game, it’s going to be tough. It’s one of the best teams in the world, great players, but we want to be ourselves, and we have to see after the game how it’s gone.

“We can go there to win if we play a really good game, but we can also play a good game and lose. So, the most important thing for us is to keep on going and try to be ourselves, not changing anything, and that’s the message from the gaffer, to be ourselves, not trying to be different. We want to keep the ball, try to go there and create something and be dangerous, but at the same time, we need to watch that they don’t run over us with the good players.”

Team News for Manchester City v Wolves

There have been positive updates on the fitness of City’s key men Rodri and Erling Haaland this week but neither will be fit for tomorrow night.

John Stones and Nathan Ake also remain sidelined.

Wolves have no fresh worries and Pereira will likely retain the same starting XI that cruised past Leicester 3-0 last weekend.
