Makeup artist Allison Kaye details game-day looks of NFL WAGs
When hair and makeup artist Allison Kaye was approached with the opportunity to style Sophie Scott, the girlfriend of Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, for the 2021 NFL Draft last April, the 31-year-old beauty enthusiast was encouraged to work one of the league’s biggest nights by her longtime champion, her husband.
“Honestly before then, I was just an average hair and makeup stylist who did weddings and other kinds of things,” Kaye recently recalled to The Post.
“Sophie herself had found me on Instagram and I was in our house in Florida at the time, the draft was in Cleveland, but I have a second home in Cleveland. She emailed me and my husband was like, ‘You fly up there and you go do the draft,’” she continued. “So I did and ever since then, I just started getting sports clients, specifically with the NFL.”
Kaye, who has been styling since the age of 6, even running a neighborhood salon out of a friend’s bathroom, continues to make a name for herself as a stylist in the sports sector, working with the likes of Allison Kuch, the wife of Browns defensive end Isaac Rochell, Alyssa Takitaki, the wife of Browns linebacker Sione Takitaki, and Hannah Lewis, the girlfriend of Patriots rookie quarterback Bailey Zappe.
Ahead of Zappe’s second career start against the Browns on Oct. 16, Lewis showed off her glamorous game-day styling from Kaye, which included a playful ponytail adorned with hair jewelry. Those pieces, according to Kaye, are something she’d like to incorporate into future looks.
“In her pony[tail], you can see the silver hair jewelry in there,” Kaye said of Lewis. “She was like, ‘I want some kind of pony,’ and I was like, ‘OK, here’s how we should do it,’ and then I have this hair jewelry and she had never seen anything like that. She was like, ‘That’s so cool,’ and [it] ended up being a hit.”
When it comes to curating a look, it’s something of a collaboration between Kaye and the client.
“It’s just fun to see what the girls want to do and to see where their inspo [inspiration] is and kind of elevate their inspiration,” she said. “So they show me something and then, in my mind, my first thought is, how do we elevate this to make this something that people will talk about and is different?”
Styling NFL clients has been a fun experience for Kaye, as she’s been able to get “wild and creative” when producing the looks.
“What I think is awesome, specifically, about the NFL, is that their styling that I do with them can kind of be very wild and creative,” she said, “and it makes sense because it is the NFL, whereas I feel like for maybe some of the other sports, it’s a little more tame.”
For instance, when Alyssa Takitaki watched her husband’s Browns team defeat the Bengals on Halloween night Monday, Kaye created a “fun and glamorous” look for primetime.
“We decided to go with some glamorous curls but added in the braids for fun with hair jewelry incorporated into the braid [silver and gold rings] secured with Cleveland Browns color, orange, hair elastics,” Kaye shared. “Makeup-wise we kept it glamorous and fun with a glitter eyeshadow and wing.”
Though styling for February’s Super Bowl and NFL Honors is at the top of Kaye’s bucket list, the Florida-based stylist also has her eyes on the ultimate prize.
“My goal now is to kind of be, since I don’t know of any other stylists who really are specifically niched in the NFL, is to be that and kind of be an originator of game-day glam,” Kaye said.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with them [the wives and girlfriends of players] and making game day special for them.”
